And to think, some misguided souls still insist on referring to the late, great Sammy Davis Jr. as Mr Entertainment. If there was any shred of doubt before, Dion Phaneuf is hereforth bequeathed the title from the Candy Man himself. He does it all. Has it all. Flaunts it all.
Consider the range, the breadth, of his performance on Wednesday. For openers, yet! Astonishing. A not-so-Norris-ish giveaway and a minus-1 on his first shift of the pre-season. Followed by a ruthless open-ice seek-and-destroy mission on Coyotes' left winger Daniel Carcillo, one of those train-wreck jobs he specializes in, sending the spinning Carcillo through the air like a discus near the Calgary blueline.
Then a goal, one of those patented scorchers, Phoenix defenceman Keith Yandle coughing up the puck right into Phaneuf's wheelhouse.
On a night conspicuously devoid of star power for the 12,621 NHL-starved fans in the stands, Phaneuf did his utmost to spice up proceedings.
