Penguins' Crosby shuts down union chief

“SidneyPlayer reps for the embattled NHL Players Association met on a conference call this Sunday and 22-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby(notes) apparently took charge of the meeting and had current union chief Ian Penny wondering if he had just lost his job, according to the Toronto Star.

Penny, of course, led a coup against former executive director Paul Kelly late in the summer that left the union disorganized and confused. Players began questioning the coup and there seems to be a movement now to replace Penny. Crosby apparently told Penny to get off the call at one point so there could be a players-only conversation. Penny initially resisted but finally got off, ceding control to the young Penguins superstar.

The Union is a completely unnecessary money-hoarding organization in today's nhl as in any profession. With the power agents maintain as well as existing rules meant to protect the players; NHL unions serve no other purpose but to have a piece of the pie of which they are not entitled to.
Good for Crosby for setting that executive packing, but what's the good with one scumbag taking over for another?

Well figuring it is the Players Association it probably should be mainly all players and then somebody that understands the game. I don't care if it was Crosby or some veteran putting the guy in place, either would have been right.

I like this--younger players have much more at stake than the veterans that have been handling things so far. The kids can't do much worse than they did anyway. Having said that Crosby you need to focus on putting up some points for my fantasy squad.

...wow he's such a whiner and needs to grow up (sarcasm) this is why folks he is the face of the NHL...mature beyond his years and is 100% dedicated to the sport of hockey...not like the old gaurd that is going to fight him all the way.

Thats awesome. The players need to stand up for themselves, at least Crosby had the balls to do it. I guarantee turds like Ovie and Richards would never do such a thing. This is why Crosby is so important to the NHL. Pens/Crosby haters can suck it.

I cant stand Crosby because he is a big crybaby when it comes to playing and getting hit but I admire him on what he did in the meeting.

Players unions exist so that marginal players don't get silenced by greedy owners and superstars. It seems odd that Crosby would care much about the players' union as he will likely never make the league minimum nor have to rely on its pension fund. Still, if he was using his star power for the good of the league, I guess that's a good thing,.. and something Bettman has not been able to do. Maybe Penny just got off the line because he was afraid Crosby was going to punch him in the b*lls!

I understand the topic all too well, I work with Unions everyday in various professions. The purpose of Unions isn't to protect marginal players, that's their PR that you fell for. In an uncapped free economy players will earn what they deserve to be paid. Salaries are free to rise and fall based on current market conditions, and best of all no ridiculous union fees need to be paid.
The players have plenty protection, if they feel mistreated at one team they can take their services to another, agents exist to help them with these matters. So, once again, that means Unions exist for one reason and that's to raise their power in the league and dictate any and all terms to their advantage.

I think mario had to open Crosby's eyes, and get him to push his influence in here. He had been quiet for so long, and now I guess he has the power to do what he did. This would not of been able by any other player. Goodbye penny, and bring back Kelly, if not , no hockey in a couple of years
