The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to win the Stanley Cup. Relax Detroit Red Wings fans, it won't be this spring according to the Windsor Star.
Looking at a roster led by superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and littered with young, developing talent, the Pens are on track to take it all and soon. Just not yet. Before you can graduate, first you must be schooled. That's what Detroit is about to do for Pittsburgh.
"It's going to be a good test," Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom said of the impending battle with the Penguins.
A test that the Wings have passed before with flying colours. By comparison, the Pens are still working with crayons. Think of virtually any great team and each journey started with shattering disappointment. Consider the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980s, the club of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri and Grant Fuhr. Much heartbreak was endured before glory was achieved. These are exams the Pens are still writing.
Hockey people often draw parallels between the Penguins and those young, brash Oilers, who were as cocky as they were talented. Crosby understands the reasons behind the comparisons, even if he doesn't entirely agree with the assessment. Detroit does the little things that win playoff games better than the Penguins. Detroit wins more faceoffs, doesn't turn the puck over nearly as frequently or in as dangerous a position as Pittsburgh does. The Detroit rearguard is quicker and more skilled than its Pittsburgh counterpart. The prediction: Red Wings in six games.

Another stat...
The team with home ice advantage in the Finals has won the Stanley Cup 14 of the last 16 times. The only two teams to win without home ice advantage were the '97 Detroit Red Wings and the '95 New Jersey Devils.

THE 2008 PENS ARE NOT THE 80'S OILERS!!!
They are 2 different teams that are not linked in any except in someone's deluded imagination. Please focus on the 2008 Pens vs. the 2008 Wings.

My real prediciton is that someone will win and it will take between 4 and 7 games and no matter how many, it will be great to watch. It could be a sweep and still be a very close exciting series...see Pens vs. Hawks in 92....sweep with something like a 5 goal differential. It was over in 4 games, but it was great hockey. I can't wait to watch....Go Pens! I'll be on the edge of my seat.
