NHL - Sports Rumors

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has approached the Rogers Centre about potentially playing host to an outdoor game, following in the frigid footsteps of the 2003 Heritage Classic in Edmonton and the Ice Bowl between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres at snowy Ralph Wilson Stadium last month. While the process is still in the exploratory stage, Maple Leaf Sport & Entertainment Ltd. informed the NHL last week that it was intrigued at the possibility of putting on such a hockey extravaganza.

They should just do a repeat of the cold war.
Day game. Michigan vs. Michigan State.
Night game. Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
At the Big house in Ann Arbor.
That would shatter the world record attendance for a hockey game. People all over from Michigan would surely attend, and those Canucks from Ontario would come over the border to see it. I mean, in recent years...how many times do the Leafs and Wings play during the season?

The Wings can't even sell out their own building right now. Doesn't make sense to have an game in Michigan.

If we try and do these outdoor games too often, the novelty will wear off pretty quickly.

i dont think the rogers center is designed to have its roof open in the middle of winter........ hence why it has a ROOF on it. The leafs are so stupid. only want to make $$$$$ dont care about winning

Just another way Maple Leaf Sport & Entertainment Ltd. can make $$$$$$$ (BIG $$$$) without improving their hockey team. ALL OF US LEAF FANS NEED TO WAKE UP! This organization isn't about winning it is about maximizing their bottom line figures. If there was a championship for profit margin the Leafs would win every year. They know it doesn't matter if they win or lose, the same amount of people will be in the ACC every game or for the majority who can't afford scalpers price tickets watching it on Leaf TV. Oh yea, another way they make $$$$$$.
And all this from Jac4123 in Alabama......................But all Leaf fans know I am right

Rogers centre is designed to have its roof open all year round. It is a great place to have an outdoor game. It is still pretty open when the roof is open. another place to have it would be the BMO field but it doesnt fit as many people. but im sure they can fix that and add maybe 40 000 seats max. One thing that puzzles me is how detroit the number one team in the nhl cant sell out this season???? If anyone should get the outdoor game it is one of the original 6 possibly a toronto vs montreal in toronto....wwwwwwwooooowwwwww p.s. go flyers.

Does opening up a glorified sunroof really count as an "outdoor" game?

Hey Sam, just so you know, Detroit is one of the Original Six. They won five of their ten Stanley Cups during the Original Six era (1942-1967).

Hmmm... Wait a sec... I thought they'd explored every opportunity to find a way to lose. They've surprised me again with their ability to think outside the box.

i think a better game would be the penguins vs the flyers at penn state's beaver stadium. stadium capacity is 107,000 and it is located almost exactly between pittsburgh and philly.

Yes the Skydome would be an outdoor venue with the roof open and would probably work pretty well. I would prefer to see them play the Habs or wings. I cant believe it has taken them this long to start talking about an outdoor game in Toronto....

They are perfectly capable of selling out games... matter of fact, have you tried getting a ticket to a game? This Friday's game against the bluejackets is sold out through ticketmaster.
An outdoor game between the Wings and Leafs would be a sell out for sure, regardless of being held here or there. (Unless they had outrageous ticket prices.)
