NHL - Sports Rumors

Montreal Canadiens majority owner George N. Gillett Jr. Thursday vehemently denied that his hockey club is for sale, contradicting a rumored Forbes magazine report that ultimately never was published. The phantom Forbes story deflected a little of the spotlight off the Canadiens' unveiling of Centennial Plaza, the ribbon-cutting for the Bell Centre concourse tribute to the club's history coming on its 99th birthday. And that deflection had Gillett much less than pleased, according to The Gazette.

The Colorado resident's finances have been ripe for speculation in recent days. His cash flow and debt load have been scrutinized in several published reports, especially related to his co-ownership of the Premier League's Liverpool Football Club.

Gillett flatly denied comment when first asked about a sale of the Canadiens, rumour of a Forbes story making the rounds early in the day but finally proving to have never been reported by the magazine.

Yet later, after a lengthy, spirited, off-the-record discussion with a small group of reporters, he spoke for the record, saying that neither he nor as far as he knew anyone in the organization has spoken to any individual or party about the sale of the Canadiens.

"The Montreal Canadiens club has never been for sale," Gillett said. "We have never prepared documents, materials. (I have) never authorized anyone, never prepared materials to that end. I'm angry that I need to keep denying (that the club is for sale)."

while he's at it please sell off your stake in the GilletteEvernham team. You forced your canadien boy Carpentier into the #10 car causing Riggs to loose his ride with Evernham over politics. At least Riggs was a balls to the wall driver.

if this guy wants to sell this club for a lot of money, just give balsille a call. If was willing to pay 220 million for preds, he will definitely pay 300-350 for an iconic team like montreal.

He would have to sell the team if the debt for Liverpool is called on to be repaid. Liverpools' debt is about 400 mil so he would need to sell the canadiens to pay off that debt.

Gillette is one of the better owners and if he sold his team, may Jeebus have mercy on the NHL with all the criminals that Bettman allows to be owners. Bettman should be castrated for blocking the no-brainer of Nashville to be moved, instead he gave it to a felon and let the Wild transfer hands to the other bastard that owned the Preds. It's a real shame Bettman lets his friends from the underworld come in and 'own' teams when they don't have the money or just there to run a team into a ground. The Liverpool fiasco isn't Gillette's problem, it's the other guy that co-owns it being a dick, but soccer is lame and a sport invented by European women to keep themselves busy while their husbands were cooking. IT'S TRUE. So go check it out and email me at footballisgreatandsoccersucks@email.com haha.

Who cares, Canada sucks anyways. The only guy I really like on their team is Carey Price, and he hasn't quite lived up to the hype. Yet. No real rumor, this is kind of a waste.

Norman, you old tool. I'm a big hockey fan, but the real Football is King. You ought to embrace the league structures of Football around the world and you'd see how foolish this NHL braintrust is. The Canadians aren't worth the Interest payments Hicks & Gillette have with Liverpool (and talk about conflict of interest: one guy owns Dallas one guy owns Montreal - how is that legal that they're in business together?).
Football is the greatest sport on the planet and even IF it had been started by women, they'd probably be able to kick your a$s.

If Bettman has his way, the Habs would be sold and moved to Kansas City.
