Flyers' Gagne could need surgery

“SimonPhiladelphia Flyers star forward Simon Gagne(notes) apparently discovered during an ultrasound on Monday that he has two small hernias in his right groin, according to TSN.ca. That is likely to mean surgery for Gagne.

He's supposedly meeting with the Flyers' medical staff today to figure out exactly what the next steps will be. The 29-year-old already went under the knife earlier this year to remove bone spurs in his right hip.

Gagne must be at least relieved to know what the pain is. He's apparently been suffering since the start of training camp.

This guy will never be health again. This was a known issue before training camp and I bet my life they thought he could play thru it. Time for the Flyers to cut their loses with this guy. Trade him for a goalie cause Emery Sucks, and while they are at it, time to fire that stiff Stevens. Does this guy ever show any emotion. Andy Reid clone!

Simon Gagne and Gabrik could be brothers in a former life.

agree...he comes up lame every year. very sadly, it appears the flyers are gonna suck this year...and watch the caps and penguins steam roll the division.

leskch00: I totally agree regarding Stevens. His passive/patient approach to the game simply does nothing for his players. All that ifrepower and we still "hold back" and clamp down on defense. Emery appears be like every other Flyer goalie since Hextall: Good, but not good enough to match the Pens or Capitals. Gagne won't be traded. Big contract and injury-history will be in the way. Put him on long-term IR and hope he's healthy enough for the lat month or two of the season.

Agree with most so far. Stevens needs to go. I'm sick of the blown leads and defensive approaches late in games. Gagne will be very tough to trade because of his contract. If they place him on the IR, it will free up cap space to go get a power forward like a Nathan Horton. What I cannot understand is why when Gagne felt hampered during the Olympic practices why he didn't get checked out them? Either way, some changes need to come.

There is way too much talent on this team for Holmgren not to have a sense of urgency. Plus, Pronger isn't getting any younger.

I said about 3 years ago they should have traded him, while he was worth something.
Regardless of his 74 points last year, it seems ever since he got that concussion 2 years ago, it's almost like he is afraid to get hit or take a hit to make a play. My wife on the rag would scrap harder than him.
Right now, he is no better than a league minimum 4th line rookie. Well, we're stuck with him for the next 4 years and the balance of this year, all we can do is hope he elects to get the surgery now so he can give some kind of support come play-off time...assuming we make it to the play-offs.

Yeah its time to let Gagne go. The guy just can't stay healthy. Its bad enough its not a matter of will Briere get hurt but when. We can't afford to rely on both of them for a significant amount of games and it's time to turn it over to the young guys. As for the Flyers sucking this year I think you guys should calm down a little before putting them in the coffin. Were barely into the season and there still trying to find their rhythem. Man that defense is really bad so far though.

My god people, give your heads a shake! Gagne is a 29 year old forward, who CAN SCORE, and has solid defensive presence. Oh yeah, should we mention that he has been selected for 3 Team Canada's and won a Gold Medal? Hmmm how about the fact he can play in any situation? There are very few players in the NHL with his resume. Yes he's injured right now, but he WILL get healthy. Gagne needs to stay because they CANNOT replace him this season.
I tend to agree with the Stevens comments however. No personality, no passion, and no reign over this team. Need a change. We should have went after Pat Quinn.

I'd like to see Jim Schoenfeld coaching the Flyers. He's a motivator who seems to know how to light a fire under star players. Stevens' "let's play defense" in any and all situations is so frustrating to watch. Honestly, no team protects a 1-goal defecit like Philadelphia. It's so senseless. I watched the Canucks and Wings late last night. The Flyers could learn from them. Dmen attacking the puck and doing all they can to hold it in and try to maintain offensive presence. Gambling to TRY AND SCORE first....and worrying about an odd-man rush only if it happens,,,,because they're motus operandi is TO TRY TO SCORE....not to win a game 0-0. Time and time again, when the Flyers trail in the 3rd period, the dmen back out to centre ice at the first sign of no puck control, rather than gambling with a pinch along the boards. Sickens me. I'd rather give up a 2-on-1 due to a missed gamble on offense, than generating nothing and quietly taking a loss without any chances due to the conservative play. Lastly, someone needs to give a week-long clinic to the Flyer centers as they are all an abomination in the face-off circle. CLEAN losses are the norm....and face-offs are a critical part of the game.
