If the Atlanta Thrashers finally decide to trade 30-goal scorer Ilya Kovalchuk(notes), there are two teams that are supposedly in the front of the pack right now: the Washington Capitals and the Calgary Flames.
The Flames are supposedly ready to include 24-year-old defenseman Dion Phaneuf(notes) in a deal and the Caps are supposedly prepared to offer a lot to get the prolific Russian winger, according to NESN.
Other teams that will be in the mix include the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, and New York Rangers. All of those teams are waiting on Thrashers GM Don Waddell, who probably won't deal Kovalchuk until trading-deadline day, March 3, if he can't get him to sign to a contract extension.
So far it hasn't looked good for the Thrashers to get a deal done. So there should be plenty of Kovalchuk rumors still floating all through the Olympic break.
