Sources tell TSN Dan Boyle has signed his no-trade clause and has agreed to a trade to the San Jose Sharks. The paper work is now in the hands of the NHL. Pending NHL approval the next step will be the finalization of the deal.

In return for the 31-year old veteran defenseman, it is believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23-year old defenseman Matt Carle, a first round draft pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick. Sources say defenseman Brad Lukowich is also part of the deal going to San Jose.

The Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers were the other two teams who made in to Boyle's final three trade options.

This should make Sharks fans expecting "improvement" in '08-'09 feeling a lot better about their chances now that they don't have to call Christian Ehrhoff their number one d-man.
As for Tampa...not sure the strategy there, other than freeing up cash. Stock up on forwards, then trade your best puck-moving point man away after signing him to a six-year extension three and a half months earlier. Jay Feaster was the GM then and still is now, and it wasn't as though he didn't know there would be a change in ownership when he extended Boyle. That move is a head-scratcher.
Isn't Matt Carle basically the same thing as Paul Ranger? You wonder if the Bolts might now try to swing a deal for someone like Kubina...or would that be too confusing: "Kuba...passes to Kubina!"

Matt the Lightning's biggest concern are guys that can actually play D.Granted Boyle wasnt a defensive liability but other than Ranger there D was weak at best. With the offense they have up front they need guys that can play in front of the net. They let the core of their D get away when Cullimore left then they lost Sarich.

The lighting just signed this guy, Boyle should of told them to buy him out, and live with the consequence! The ownership should not be allowed to get away w/ that when other teams like the leafs, islanders, flyers, etc are dealing with buying guys out like Tucker, Yashin etc! Boyle made life to easy for them!! Bad move by the Sharks taking a 32 year old guy with a huge contract just like the Rags did with Redden!

get rid of vlasic? you are crazy. i though vlasic is better d-man than carle. there was a reason why vlasic got more minutes.
and the sharks didn't mortgage their future, i'd say half the team is home grown with more young players on the way that were drafted the last two years. boyle is only 31 and still has 5 years on his contract. they drafted a defensemen in last months draft. they could afford to let go carle and two draft picks especially that it got the sharks boyle

and another...31 in hockey is a lot different from 31 in football

mortgaging their future? they've floundered in the playoffs for years. the future is now. no more wasting time and opportunities. ^5 to doug wilson for his aggressiveness in addressing the sharks' weaknesses. bye campbell and carle. welcome, blake and boyle. bring the next season on.

The only other option would have been to put Boyle on waivers and let any team claim him( of course in order). Lightning would receive nothing and Boyle would not have any control of who would claim him. His only option was to agree to a trade with certain clubs of his choosing.

Certainly won't miss Carle, he got pulled from the line-up several times this year due to poor play. He may have potential to be a better player but the Sharks didn't lose anything by trading him. Now we can get rid of Error-hoff, he's better off playing in his home country where they don't hit anybody. Anyone who thinks Carle was better than Vlasic should have there eyes checked or have no clue about playing defense. Lets hope Doug Wilson gets us another scorer on offense, that would make the next season even more interesting. Oh by the way Doug W. please dump Marcel Goc too, another softie like Error-hoff.

"..get rid of Vlasic instead"! Vlasic is the proto-typical defensive defenseman. With Boyle and Blake bringing their big shots from the point, Carle was the obvious choice to move. Not to mention his up and down play as a Shark, Vlasic has been a rock every year. I hope Pickles stays in San Jose long-term.

Not to bring up old wounds, but remember what happened to the Sharks in the playoffs. You put some pressure of the young Shark's young d, and they cough it up in their own zone. I think with Blake, Boyle, and Rivet around to provide some development for Erhoff, Vlasic, Murray, Joslin, we have a pretty good balance between the younger guys and the veterans. And even at 33, look at Chelios in Detroit. Yeah, he doesn't skate 30 minutes a game anymore, but he's not exactly a liability and a great locker room presence. I hope Blake to be the same thing, just how JR did last year.

Carle is still to young write off. They might have given up to much for Boyle. A young player, two draft picks, and a prospect. I wonder who the prospect will be. That is a little steep for Boyle. He is an upgrade over Campbell in the defensive sense and cheaper to boot. But really did the Sharks need him?

Thank God Carle SUUUUUUUCKS! I feel sorry for you T.B. fans Carle has potential but its just that he makes bone head plays in his own zone and he is supposed to be his best on th pp but he cant ever hit the net he aims for corners missing the net and clearing the zone...VERY frustrating good luck clearing these bad habits.

Also, people have been ragging on thornton for his playoff performance but it's not his fault that he faces single or double coverage throughout the season and then all of a sudden he's being double and triple teamed by the other teams best defensemen and defensive forwards. It was too painful to watch their powerplays last year when Joe would get sandwiched and everyone else would stand around. Then he would pass to Erhoff and he would miss it and let it go all the way down the ice.

until the sharks make actually make it to the stanley cup final, they can bite it. I'm sick and tired of them saying that this is going to be the year and then they cough in the playoffs. Dallas looks like the strongest in the pacific and Phoenix looks decent this year to.

sharks did not mortgage their future because they are still loaded with young talent, they lost carle, a 2nd round pick, but have a 1st rounder waiting in the minors, they wont miss the draft pick or the prospect because they are already loaded with young guys who play big roleslike mitchell, vlassic, and pavelski, this trade should cement the sharks as a top 2 team in the west battling with the wings for the #1 spot

!st rounder. In return for the 31-year old veteran defenseman, it is believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23-year old defenseman Matt Carle, a first round draft pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick
This is not a bad or good trade, it is necessary trade...the patience is running thin within sharks organisation I am sure...
