Blake bolts LA for San Jose

Faced with being part of another rebuilding job with the Kings, Rob Blake instead just said no. The six-time All-Star defenseman Thursday signed a one-year, $5-million deal with the San Jose Sharks, the Kings' Pacific Division rival and a team that is a Stanley Cup contender.

In doing so, Blake, 38, leaves a team where he has spent 14 of his 18 NHL seasons, but one that is far from being a Cup contender and is expected to infuse the lineup with even more youngsters. The decision was made only after it became apparent that he and the Kings could not reach an agreement. San Jose, which won the division last season but was eliminated in the second round, gives Blake another shot at the Cup.

"They're on the verge every year," Blake said. "It's exciting to be just moving up the road a little and playing for a championship again."

The Kings were looking at bringing the one-time Norris Trophy winner back for another season. General Manager Dean Lombardi said he had spoken with Blake and asked if he would be on board with the team's youth movement. Lombardi said he wasn't surprised as Blake informed him of his decision to leave Wednesday night.

I wasn't really upset when we lost Campbell, but was frustrated that DW was sitting on his hands during all the free-agent movement, but as usual he's pulled off another big move. Blake may not be the fastest player on the ice but opposing team forwards better have their heads-up when they cross the blue-line, and maybe, just maybe we have a somebody who can score from there too. Now DW can afford to dump Error-hoff, and please find someone with guts to replace softie Marcel Goc.

You can have that over rated blue liner.
He only shows up for playoff teams anyway.
Way to buy a cup, Ducks style San Jose :)

you hit that one on the nose "error-hoff" i swear he would make a couple great plays and then always ruin it with a crucial penalty at the wrong moment. i've been wanting san jose to dump him for a couple of years now

    Ahaahahaahhahahahaahaha!
Good luck taking out the Red Wings, with those acquisitions lol.
You might be better than the Kings, Ducks, & Stars but Edmonton,Detroit,& The Wild are still better all around teams. Calgary possibly as well.
You need more than one more scorer to compete with the Wings that's for sure!

The Wild? The Oilers? What sport are you talking about here, Tony?
$5M seems like a lot for what Blake looked like he had left, but as long as there is room, that is no problem on a one-year deal.

With the acquisition of Boyle and the departure of Soup, you just upgraded that position. Not only with talent but with experience in already having won the cup. Knowing what it takes to win is invaluable. Thats something that can't be taught, just directed and experienced.Adding Blake with that shot can't hurt as well.

    I'm talking hockey.
You have 2 lines at best SJ.
    Seriously.
No finishers compared to The Wings what so ever.
You probably will win the Pacific but another early exit for the Sharks in the Playoffs.

Yeah,I didn't want Blake back,he screwed the Kings by making the Kings trade Brad Stuart instead of him..He also said that he wanted to retire as a King and I didn't want him back, not for 6 million.. But Kings,Blake had the same idea I had ,the man offered to take a 2 million dollar pay cut but to STUPID Dean L,that wasn't good enough.Blake had to sign with someone before no one else wanted him.San Jose sure did, it was obvilous that Dean L. didn't wanted him that badly.. And Kings fans have you seen Dean L. sign anybody at all?.There were plenty of young talent out there to be sign,, Dean L. has offer the Kings free agents only a 5 percent raise and that is why they haven't sign.. What is Dean L. waiting for? Is he just thinking the Cup is just going to land in his lap..Dean L. is a biggest TIGHTA$$ I've ever seen,do you get the feeling that they want this team to fail?.. And Kings fans, the next time you go to a game and you BOOED the team. Just remember who put that team out there.. It's alright to rebuiid, but you must make players want to be here and also come here.Give these kids some help at least for the love of God!!!!!!!!!! And wher's the new Coach............. My choice would be either Larionov or Dale Hunter, yes Hunter,he was a hardnose, fiesty player..........

"I will never play for Anaheim or San Jose and I'd rather retire before that happens" -Rob Blake March 2008
Hey Rob, what happened....ya'd figured you were out of a job in LA....besides, why take a pay cut when you can play in SJ and have something positive to look forward to.....like a date with Detroit or Dallas in the west Finals

So, Tony, your argument is that the Sharks have fewer finishers than...the Wild? The Wild score about 100 goals a year, and Marian Gaborik is responsible for about half of them. The Great Foxodamus says that Havlat plays fifty games this year, meaning only 30-something for Gabby (the Universe falls out of balance if both are healthy), who will be nursing a broken heart over Demetra. The Oil? Maybe they'll score a lot of goals, maybe not, but they'll give up a ton for sure.
