Steve Bernier

The San Jose Sharks have too many forwards and big Steve Bernier, who's been in and out of coach Ron Wilson's doghouse, might be a bargaining chip to get a defenseman at the deadline according to the Edmonton Journal.

Devin Setoguchi can take his spot in the lineup and Ryane Clowe is two or three weeks from returning from a knee injury.

Dont trade Berny! This guy has huge potential. Soft hands, goes to the net and more than willing to break someone's face. We dont need a D that bad. Clowe and Bernier are the perfect mix of toughness and scoring potential. Look for another forward!!!!

    Hi
If you've been to many Sharks games and don't only watch them on TV, you know Bernier skates, harder plays more intense than 90 percent of the team. He's young strong and will get better in time, he's physical and they need this in the playoffs. Cheecoo is on a positive role and keeps getting better every game, we need Marleau to get in sync. Trade Brown or Goc not Berier. Keep Bernier around Wilson!

sharks have a lot of young depth.... so it wouldn't be a huge loss if they trade poor steve bernier. he deserves a trade too... hes currently bouncing between the 2nd, 3rd or 4th line and isn't really producing to his full potential. if he went to a team like florida or columbus, he would probably be a stud.
just to rebuttle david z's comment: brown is a little too old to have any trade value... and goc barely makes the lineup in sj so he probably won't be worth much to anyone besides a checking line center. if sj wants talent.. they will have to trade someone like bernier, carle, or clowe to get it

I'd love to keep Bernier around. He just isn't quite 'there' yet. I don't agree that he always plays hard either. Plus I dont think he gets to contribute at all on penalty kill or power play. That says a lot for a player that is touted as much as Bernier. The fact that even Jeremy Roenick is getting more power play time than the younger, faster, stronger Bernier says a lot too.

Sharks sent Setoguchi down last week. I'm sure other teams bring his name up in trade talks, but I think the Sharks will keep both he and Clowe, and be willing to take the picks if some team throws big cash at them in the off-season, but they will match reasonable offers.
By "in the doghouse" I assume the clever guy in Edmonton means he was scratched for a game recently, and was sent down for a while last year. Don't bet on it; more likely the Sharks are showcasing Plihal (and cementing their rights as well, since Plihal needs to play in a certain number of games for the Sharks to retain RFA rights) at it was Bernier's turn to sit.

If the sharks where to trade Bernier to get someone that puts up numbers then that is what is needed. the sharks for whatever reason this season are struggling on offence. Big Joe cant do this thing solo although he is making a serious attempt. Cheechoo is finaly starting to get rolling. Patrick marleau got hurt last night for who knows how long. so they are going to need a speedy scoring player to back him up

I'd be pretty surprised if the sharks trade Bernier. The sharks have about 93 different forwards with a lot of potential. I don't know that more defense support is necessary, but another goal scorer that could help Joe now would be nice. Cheech seems to be playing a lot better though, so bottom line is that I am not sure the sharks really need a trade.

bernier is not our top forward and we dont need him if it means we can get a scoring defensemen like blake or redden.. i love bernier dont get me wrong but GUYS do u really think this shraks team is a team that can beat detroit, anehiem, and dallas in the playoffs? i dont but we r close. lets get a package of bernier draft picks and money and get blake or redden. so trust wilson he pulled off the joe trade, rivet trade and mclaren trade.

I think he'd look good in red w/ a great big fat winged wheel on his chest.
Wilson is a total head gamer, some players including Marleau don't respond well to this.

I like Bernier, but he has been inconsistant since his first year in the league. Some days you can't move him off the corners. some days people just skate right by him. I hate to see him go, but if it improves the team then let it be done.

dkooldude - i wouldn't exactly consider the mclaren trade to be one of wilson's signature deals. i mean he is great if you need a guy with a yellow visor to skate backwards and point while on defense. and the sharks haven't exactly missed him while he's been injured.

Truth is we need a d-man like Redden from the Sens. He's in his last year with Ottawa before free agency and would have the same impact amognst the defense as Jumbo did with the forwards. Bernier could thrive on another team 'cause the Sharks are just too deep at forward. You've got to give to get!

Gee, thanks, Knucks; oh, wait, the Sharks drafted Samuelsson! And let him walk. I agree that Bernier will look great with a Winged Wheel logo plastered across his chest, but when I imagine it, it is in the playoffs and most of Hudler is still inside the jersey, and the rest is stuck to the boards.
For those of you griping about Bernier's consistency, the guy is 22. So is Carle. So are Michalek, Pavelski and Mitchell. Vlasic and Setoguchi (when he's up) are 20. The Ducks only have two guys that young, and the Wings would have to call up Quincy to get even one. The clock is not yet ticking on the Sharks, and there is no reason they should be dumping guys for One Last Run. Their time at the top will come soon enough.

i would be dumping marleau and possibly even cheecho for blueliner. landing cambpell from the sabres or redden would be a dream.
and i am concerned where our tending is headed after nabby. would love to get either price (dreaming) or halak from the habs
    keep the young guys

Yup, this would be irresponsible on the Sharks part to let him go, but bait is bait. However this guy should be getting more press than Brunnstrom and more attention from the Wings (assuming he isn't) not only because of his size, but like you said, age. Looking at his stats,he also looks like he can rack up some points.
The other thing I like is, it seems these power forwards have longer careers than the little guys.
    C'mon Books Lilja, even up!

Knucks, with the year 2/3 gone I'd rather help Wayne out than add Lilja (though for what they are making, that would not be true over the whole year). The difference between Bernier and Brunnstrom is that the Wings have a chance to get Brunnstrom; I don't see Bernier going for a rental, I don't see him going to Detroit at all.

Hmm, i wonder if it would be a good idea, young with size and potential. Unless you can get somewhat equal value.
