NHL - Sports Rumors

The Phoenix Coyotes may finally have someone who is interested in buying it. The owners of the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts, Howard Sokolowski and David Cynamon, are apparently thinking that they may make a bid, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.

At least one of the pair will meet with folks in Phoenix next week. They apparently broke off from the Ice Edge group that put a bid in on the team earlier in the process.

They supposedly have around a dozen other financial backers who want to jump into ownership with them.

Meanwhile, the NHL is likely to get approval next week to buy the Coyotes and re-pay its $140 million in debts. Then the league will re-sell the team and the Argonauts owners would apparently like to be the ones who snag it.

they can't even run a CFL team properly, what makes them think they can jump to the NHL?

well noone can run the coyotes right. so maybe they can do something noone has done for coyotes and make some money instead of losing. can't get worse then they already are.

I dont care who buys the Coyotoes as long as it is someone AND they move them. I dont care who, and I dont care where. I am glad the NHL won the fight against Basillie because he was completely in the wrong. But it's time for anyone else, yes anyone, to give the team a shot in a new place. The NHL tried, they failed, and now it is time to admit hockey is dead in Phoenix and take it to where it is wanted and needed. Canada. Expansion only works where there is a market for it. It is clear Phoenix is not that market. I just don't understand the league's need to continue to force hockey into non-hockey markets when we ALL know a new team will succeed in one of many Canadian towns.

I have to agree that these guys did not make the Argos work so what will be differnt. Ballisille should have been allowed to buy and move the Coyotes and end the misery.

Alaska could use a team and there is a large following of hockey up here. Pro sports shouldn't be forced into markets that won't support it and adding any team to Las Vegas is bad idea.

I gotta admit , as a hockey fan from the northeast , I have been here a few weeks and was disappointed by the crowd last weekend, but I went Thurs night and over 10300 , with a couple thou c black hawk ffans, but 10300 non the less , and the place was electric. you can feel the slow growth of excitement , the better they do and the more confident fans are that they are supporting a team they know will stay. by january and if they are in it still and if the ownership situation is less tenuous, i believe that place will be full and by olympic break you might not be able to get a ticket..............it was a great site to see all the concessions open and having to actually wait in line for a beer between periods...............get er done,

Don't be surprised if the group that finally ends up with the Coyotes ownership will be the Las Vegas group headed by Hollywood Producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Harrah’s and AEG announced plans to built a 20,000-seat, privately-financed arena in Las Vegas that will be located a block east of the Strip on nearly ten acres of land that is part of Harrah’s current holdings once an NHL team can be secured. AEG is the group that built the Staples Center in Los Angeles and the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Both Jerry Bruchhiemer and AEG have very close ties to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. So get use to it by saying "Viva Las Vegas Coyotes". Sorry, Hamilton and Winnipeg fans. However, Winnipeg fans you will be rewarded soon enough with the Atlanta Thrashers. It is reported to be in the works to sale the Thrashers to a group from Winnipeg. Only problem is the Thrashers are tied to their Arena lease till 2011. Also the Winnipeg group to have figure a way to expansion the capacity of the new MTS from 15,000 to 17,500 the NHL minimum requirement. As for Hamilton fans forgive it, it will never happen.

Yes, let's move the team back to Winnipeg, where it worked out so well for them the last time, or to Quebec City, or to Hartford, CT. It's interesting that you guys ignore that there are some "Non-traditional" market teams that are doing better where they are than the old Jets, Nordiques, or Whalers did in their 'traditional" hockey markets. The reasoning you guys give (while appropriate for the Phoenix situation) makes about as much sense as the Klan or the NAACP.

Isn't Gretz part owner of the Argonauts??? WTF sports fans, and he should have kept himself out of the HOF ceremonies, what a need for attention, didn't see his wife there? The other guys had their wives with them, and he's "NOT" the greatest player ever in the game, that's an insult to the players that are, but then again they have mare class than him, and know how to do business. What an example he's shown the kids, quit on your team as a coach, and whine about the money, what a joke he is, no matter how upset some of you may be with this posting...
