Roloson stops 58 shots as Isles beat Leafs

TORONTO (AP)—It’s been 18 years since an NHL goalie made as many saves as Dwayne Roloson(notes) did Monday night.

The 40-year-old Roloson turned aside 58 shots to help the New York Islanders beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Josh Bailey’s(notes) goal at 4:18 of overtime. The last goalie to reach that total was Ron Tugnutt, who stopped 70 shots for the Quebec Nordiques at Boston on March 21, 1991, according to STATS.

“To me, it’s just another night, another game,” Roloson said. “It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s one shot or 100 shots, I’ve got to do the same things, try to give my team a chance to win.”

The victory improved Roloson’s record to 2-0-2 on a long road trip, and 7-2-5 overall this season. The Islanders went 3-2-2 on the trip to improve to 9-8-7 this season, but they know they wouldn’t have been so successful if not for the tireless Roloson in net.

“I don’t ever remember a game like that,” said Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel(notes), who had 12 shots himself. “I don’t even know what to say after something like that.”

Roloson, who signed as an unrestricted free agent last summer, made several great saves—the most painful of which was No. 52, a hard shot from Mikhail Grabovski(notes) that hit him directly in the mask. It’s the kind of performance his new team has come to expect.

“Roloson was outstanding,” Islanders coach Scott Gordon said. “We didn’t tell Dwayne, but we figured as long as they didn’t hit 70 shots, we’d be all right.”

Bailey took a pass from Sean Bergenheim(notes) and slammed the puck into an open net to make a winner of Roloson. It was the Islanders’ only shot of the extra period. Jeff Tambellini(notes), Matt Moulson(notes) and Bergenheim also scored for New York.

Phil Kessel, Wayne Primeau(notes) and Niklas Hagman(notes) scored for the Maple Leafs (4-11-7).

It was a relatively quiet night for Islanders rookie John Tavares(notes), who admitted to feeling some nerves before a game that was attended by roughly 100 friends and family. The 19-year-old from nearby Oakville was limited to one quality scoring chance—he roared in off the wing in the third period and had a shot stopped by Jonas Gustavsson(notes).

Like his teammates, Tavares left with a big smile on his face.

“I felt pretty good out there,” he said. “I just wanted to play well. It’s the city I grew up in. It was a lot of fun tonight, and a great ending for us.”

The Islanders surged to a 3-0 lead over a span of 3:13. Tambellini took a nice breakaway pass from Mark Streit(notes) and beat Vesa Toskala(notes) high, Moulson pumped his fists after tipping home his team-leading 11th of the season and Bergenheim came in alone on a short-handed rush and roofed a shot over Toskala.

Suddenly, the boos poured down from an Air Canada Centre crowd that has witnessed just two wins in 11 games this season.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction here,” defenseman Ian White(notes) said.

A glimpse of hope arrived soon after off the stick of Kessel, who scored for the sixth time in 10 games with the Maple Leafs. He charged hard to the goal and had a tap-in after taking a nice pass from Matt Stajan(notes) at 15:32.

Shortly after, Toskala pulled himself from the game because he aggravated a groin injury.

“Just a little tweak,” he said. “Hopefully, it doesn’t take too long.”

Primeau scored at 2:10 of the third period from his knees before Hagman roared around Freddy Meyer(notes) and made it 3-all at 9:18.

At that point, all signs pointed to a Maple Leafs comeback victory. Instead, the NHL’s last-place team found itself with an improbable loss.

“It was unbelievable,” Kessel said. “You know again, we didn’t win. We’ve got to bury one more puck. It’s unfortunate. We’re going to keep battling and keep working. We’ve got a good hockey club here—we’re better than our record shows.”

NOTES: Maple Leafs forward John Mitchell(notes) left in the first period with a lower-body injury. … Jeff Finger(notes) (lower body) and Rickard Wallin(notes) (healthy) were scratched by Toronto. … The Islanders sat out Rob Schremp(notes), Andrew MacDonald(notes) and Blake Comeau(notes). … Toronto took three of four meetings between the teams last season. … The Maple Leafs had 46 shots against Montreal on opening night.

    @ 88

Come on now 88, you yourself have admitted you are not the most objective person when it comes to Montreal. If I have a pro-Habs slant, then you have an anti-Habs slant. I do my best, but please don't preach to me to be more objective!

I was simply refuting the finite points you brought up, not going down the list of Gainey's moves. Never did I say that Gainey has not made a bad move, so please stop putting words in my mouth. Of course I don't like everything Gainey does, but some of those things were necessary.

I hated that he left all the UFAs this year to the last minute and refused to hold negotiations during the season, in essence putting himself in a very tough position come July 1. I hate that he let Komisarek go. I hate Gomez's salary, I would prefer it if he had gone after a proven goal scorer. I hated when he traded Huet. I understood, in hindsight, it was necessary though. So, no, I am hardly Gainey's biggest fan, but not every move he's made has been bad.

    I wouldn't say Carbo's firing was panicky...he was not a great coach.

"Horrible drafting. If you think Louis Leblanc is ever going to strap 'em on with the Habs, well, good luck to the kid."
-and in the same post -
"You well know the draft is a crap shoot"
-The fans like seeing french Canadian guys...and since it's such a crap shoot, it's hard to criticize this pick, again, please reserve criticism until there is actual proof to back up what you say instead of your own personal speculation.-

Sorry, meant ragging, not raging...forgot a "g". You love to rag on Gainey, not rage.

"Why did it take this long to get rid of Latendresse?"
-He's only 22 years old, they gave him a legit shot.-

"Think about the trades he has made, and ask yourself where is Janne Ninimma now?"
-I addressed this already...re: a deal had to be made, much like the Roy deal, sometimes you have to take what you can get.-

"Kessel is playing like a superstar right now for us - again right now. 50 goal scorer for years as long as he stays healthy."
-You are not guaranteed anything, he's never scored 50. Also he had Savard. And to reiterate, my point was you have nothing to flank him with, so why pull the trigger when you know the rebuild will take years, giving away those draft picks while you will finish so low?-

"...you well know that Chiarelli may or may not get a quality NHL player out of that trade."
-He will if the Leafs finish in the bottom 5-

-So slant your totally (anti)-Hab arguments with a little objectivity OK? Thanks. I await your reply.-

"P.S. Yes, the Habs have been very fortunate to have had stellar netminding to go 12-11-1 so far this year. Do you actually see that continuing? Do you see Price standing on his head for the rest of the year? Did you see him lose it at one point tonight because his players were playing so poorly."

-Yes, I fully expect Price to play well most nights, he is a tremendous talent. The team may not play that well, but he will. Great example was tonight against Pitt. The team wasn't stellar, but Price continues to play great hockey. This kid is the real deal and in a few years will be among the elite in the NHL. I love that he got mad (hardly 'lost it'), that shows he's passionate and wants to win. That doesn't bother me at all, he is so clam most of the time, it's nice to see some animation occasionally As for the team, yeah they are in tough, lots of injuries and a tough schedule coming up. I expect they will lose some games. I, however, will not lose any sleep over it.-

"Again, some objectivity please. Again, thanks."
-Same goes for you, I was objective talking about the Leafs, I always try to be, in fact I was trying to give you a rational response, which is what I thought you wanted. And I think I did it pretty fairly, without attacking. But I am curious about your criticism of the Leafs. That is, if you have any?-

Final note, for future posts, please just respond without talking down to me. I certainly don't like being talked down to, as I would imagine you don't. So comments intended to provoke me like "think Peyton think" and "Peyton Are you with the Habs P/R department?" are unnecessary.

How cute! Cathy P(usslicker) has created her very own fan! Let me guess, this fan thinks you're attractive(a real ladies man) and brilliant, right? Give us a break Stuart Smalley; you're NOT smart, you're NOT popular and doggone it people do NOT like you. At least the post was correctly titled, as it did cause me to "laugh a lot"; a first time for one of your posts!

Blue blood i've got news for you i am a leafs fan .But i feel a lot like mikemiself. Lets get real .do you really think the leafs will ever in your lifetime win a cup the way they are going? This will be 5 in a row they haven't even been in the playoffs. so respectfully Blue lighten up .Cathy and Mikemiself have given us the way back to respectability,we may not like it. t wont be easy. Stop trading our picks.Get rid of Burke.I do like Wilson and don't blame him.And kessel is a good hockey player but give him a chance ,calling him a superstar now is way premature if ever.I have been a long suffering Leaf fan since 1958.Although the next 9 years were good. But i do realize strong medicine and measures are needed to right this ship. Not the easy repairs many hope for.I hope you take this in the right spirit.

What kind of life (or lack there of) or emotional problems must a person have to come on a Leafs forum just to spout unintelligent and mostly incoherant drivel about a team that they dont even cheer for?
How deep must the emotional scars go? Where you wronged
by a leafs fan in a past life?
How can we as leaf fans help you to find peace with your lack of life?
Just how trivial and lonely is your life that you have nothing better to do?
Lets see, I dont want to talk about my favourite team, why dont I go on another teams site and cut them up because Im a loser with nothing better to do.
My bet is that they just hate Toronto in general.
    or maybe theyre just jerks?

Draft picks are a crap shot idiot. If they do pan out you are lucky to see big results in year 2 or 3 unless it's a Crosby or Gretz. All you morons seem to forget how Kessel has been producing so I'll gladly take him for the picks. Wait till next year when he scores 50. I notice lately how you keep bringing up your Homosexuality.Sounds like you should get out of the closet being as you are the organizer of next years pride parade. You can dance in the streets with your junk hanging out with the old bull dyke(Ya know The Dirty old Lot lizard CathyP)Don't forget your Homo(Habs)jerseys.I think we need a poem now as the Verbal diarrhea is about to commence.

Peyton Are you with the Habs P/R department? Not one negative thing to say about Gainey's horrible five year plan? And now Canadiens fans are enduring the first year of his next plan. Two coaches fired in panicky moves - his great and good friend Guy Carbonneau last year and Claude Julien before that.
Horrible drafting. If you think Louis Leblanc is ever going to strap 'em on with the Habs, well, good luck to the kid. Hope he is very very special. Comes from near my childhood home so I wish him luck.
"Raging" on Gainey. Really? You think that is rage? Legitimate and mild criticism compared to my Hab loving pals in Montreal. And www.montrealgazette.com and Habs Inside/Out. You know very well that Montreal has been calling for Gainey's head for at least two or three years now.

Now I will let you post some negatives about what Gainey has done. We disagree about every move he has made. Why did it take this long to get rid of Latendresse? What happened to Pierre Dagenais? Think about the trades he has made, and ask yourself where is Janne Ninimma now? Be a little objective.

Re the Leafs trade to Boston for Kessel. Think Peyton think. Kessel is playing like a superstar right now for us - again right now. 50 goal scorer for years as long as he stays healthy. You well know the draft is a crap shoot, you well know that Chiarelli may or may not get a quality NHL player out of that trade. We have a guaranteed 22-year-old 50 goal a year sniper in Phil Kessel. So slant your totally pro-Hab arguments with a little objectivity OK? Thanks. I await your reply.

P.S. Yes, the Habs have been very fortunate to have had stellar netminding to go 12-11-1 so far this year. Do you actually see that continuing? Do you see Price standing on his head for the rest of the year? Did you see him lose it at one point tonight because his players were playing so poorly. Again, some objectivity please. Again, thanks.

    @88 / Leafs Nation..re:the Habs

RIbeiro, like Latendresse, just wasn't getting it done in Montreal. They both got complacent, and I think assumed they could play halfheartedly and still have a job with their favourite NHL team. Yes, Ribeiro is playing much better now, but he had to go somewhere else to do it. Latendresse was asked to play a game akin to that of Holmstrom (big body in front of the net) and he refused to do it.
I'd take Gomez over Higgins, granted the salary is not ideal, but as for McDonagh, let's see how he is when he finally gets to the NHL, if/when it happens. Then we can rate that trade. The Habs also got Tom Pyatt, who I am a fan of, in that trade.
As for the Huet trade, I don't think Huet would have fared any better in those playoffs (he had very little playoff experience at that point as well). Gainey knew Price was going to be the guy for the Habs, so he made the deal, and I hardly think Price "stank it up" that year.
Gill replaces Komisarek (the one Hab I was truly sad to see go this summer), they needed a big presence on D.
We won tonight...despite $24 million, give or take, of salary out of the lineup. Lucky or not, that's the record. So, I don't see your point there, and a win in OT is also a legit win.

As for the Leafs this year, I think the fans need to find the patience necessary to sit through a long rebuild. I know this will never happen, but that's usually what it takes when you are in the Leafs situation. It was great to get Kessel, but it's kind of like having the cherry on top of the sundae without actually having the sundae. Good teams don't normally go out and acquire all the talent they need from FA or trades, they have to cultivate the draft picks they have. I think the Leafs would be wise to do the same. It would be pretty hard to stomach a Boston top 5 pick courtesy of the Leafs in next year's draft I would imagine.

Also raging on Gainey is a bit hypocritical when the Leafs were only recently able to pry themselves away from the infamous JFJ.

What will fascinate me is if Cathy can come onto this post and tell us a little about her Canadiens, and do it in a cogent intelligent fashion. I think the only thing she is capable of is ranting and raving like a lunatic about the Toronto Maple Leafs. I have not read one single intelligent thing from her yet. I hope everyone will report the freak to the Abuse people at Yahoo. I certainly do every chance I get because she is so tiresome with her sick mentally ill crap. Hopefully Yahoo will ban the freak and we won't have to read her drivel anymore.

@51 Cathy. OK, so let's talk about your Canadiens. Boob finally unloaded Latendresse to the Wild for another French guy to appease the French media in Montreal. Great move Bob! Ribeiro for Ninnima. Great trade eh? Traded Higgins and McDonagh who is an excellent prospect to the Rangers for Scotty Gomez and his outrageous $7.5 million dollar contract. Sather burned Bob on that one. That trade allowed the Rangers to free up enough cap space to sign Gaborik. Give Bob a hand there.
Traded Huet on the eve of the 2007 playoffs with the Canadiens having won the Eastern conference. For a mere draft pick. Goes with Carrie Price. Price understandably stank it up as a rookie, and the Canadiens barely got by Boston in seven and then dispatched by the Flyers in five games in the second round.
So many many other gaffes. The Hall Gill signing is a joke. Your team is losing 3-2 right now to Columbus and will lose. The score should be about 6-1 Jackets if not for Price's heroics. Your team is very very lucky to be 11-11-1 with eight OT victories and only one loss. The Cardiac Canadiens are going nowhere this year.
Why don't you talk about your team Cathy? Do you not know anything about hockey except to come onto Leaf game posts and rag, rag and rag some more you freakin' dirtbag?
The only decent forwards you have are Plekanec so far, Moen and Cammalleri. Gionta out. Gomez out. They called up Sergei Kostitsyn tonight in yet another desperation move. Maybe that will get his brother AK46 going, but I somehow doubt it.
Stick to your Canadiens posts and leave the Leafs alone you delusional negative mental case. Thanks.

JOE CASH. You are also a freakin' dumbass. Cheer for your Wings and stick to Wings posts.
@25 mikemiself You know the Leafs cannot bring up Kadri. If you don't know that and you think Gretz should be our coach then just stop talking about Toronto OK? I know you're a fan, but the fact you don't know we cannot bring up Kadri now tells me you don't know much about this team. Too bad. Moving Kaberle up to the wing? You know dickall about hockey my friend. White yes. Move him up maybe although he is a stalwart for us back on the blueline.

Hanson coming up as announced today. You know we have outplayed teams consistently this year and outshot teams consistently this year - do not give up hope. This team is not built to succeed this year. Just a fact. We have many UFA's after this year that we will jettison, and start from scratch again for the most part.
Again, come on man. No GM in the league would trade for 36-year-old Jason Blake and his $4.5 million salary!

@31 D Someone who knows what they are talking about re the Leafs. Well done. Gretz stank as a coach in Phoenix and would stink here. Burke knows it would be a circus to hire him. Wilson is not going anywhere. He and Burke running Team USA, and our poor start this year is not Wilson's fault. Poor goaltending, lack of finish around the net and a lot of bad luck and some bad play has us in this fix. We won't make the playoffs this year, and that is regrettable. But we will succeed soon enough. I hope we can come back this year and at least finish .500 and a respectable record.

Da Fat Man Keep the poetry coming bro' Love it. Hopefully we can eradicate this pestilence, the vermin like Beaver Killer, Cathy Psycho and her bf Joey Cash from Leslie and Sheppard right off these posts.
