Auld backstops Stars to 3-1 win over Red Wings

DETROIT (AP)—The Dallas Stars weren’t spectacular, just effective.

Alex Auld(notes) made 31 saves, and Mike Ribeiro(notes), Matt Niskanen(notes) and Loui Eriksson(notes) scored in Dallas’ 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Brad Richards(notes) and James Neal(notes) each had two assists for the Stars.

“We played our best game, from start to finish,” Auld said.

The Stars scored two power-play goals and killed off all four Red Wings power plays.

“We were good where we had to be on the power play and killing penalties,” Dallas coach Marc Crawford said.

Henrik Zetterberg(notes) scored for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard(notes) stopped 29 shots. The loss snapped the Red Wings’ winning streak at three.

Niskanen gave the Stars a 2-0 lead 3:52 into the second period with his first goal of the season. He beat Howard with a one-timer from the point.

Zetterberg put Detroit on the board 6:16 into the middle period with his ninth goal. He cut into the slot from the right wing and beat Auld high on the sick side.

Eriksson’s power-play goal with 7:17 left gave the Stars a 3-1 lead. He tipped in a cross-crease pass.

That came less than a minute after it appeared the Red Wings had tied it at 2.

An apparent goal by Brad May(notes), 6:24 into the third period, was waved off because it was ruled the whistle had blown. Replays showed May’s backhander from the bottom of the right circle squeezed between Auld’s skate and the short-side goal post. There wasn’t an immediate reaction, but the Red Wings’ celebrated a few seconds later.

The play was reviewed but the ruling by referees Stephane Auger and Dennis LaRue was no goal because the whistle had blown.

“It wasn’t blown dead. It was a goal,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “The guy never meant to blow the whistle. It was a shot.”

Auld, obviously, didn’t agree.

“They’ve got enough cameras in the building. If they say it’s not a goal, it’s not a goal,” he said. “I think the biggest thing was the intent of the official to blow the whistle.”

May talked about what he saw.

“After I shot it, I didn’t see it go in,” he said. “But he (Auld) was trying to pick his foot up and it was in the net. I just saw a highlight of it and have no idea why it wasn’t a goal.”

Ribeiro opened the scoring on a power play 9:26 into the game. His attempted pass was accidentally swatted into the net by Detroit defenseman Jonathan Ericsson(notes), who sprawled along the ice to thwart a pass. It was Ribeiro’s sixth goal.

NOTES: Detroit G Chris Osgood(notes) missed his third game because of the flu. … Dallas LW Fabian Brunnstrom(notes) missed his third game due to a shoulder injury. … Stars’ C Brian Sutherby(notes) missed his second game with a groin injury. … May and the Stars’ Krystofer Barch fought in the second period after having a good-natured conversation during pregame warmups.

@Don....I stated clearly that I did NOT see the game or the play. However, I've seen that "type" of play many times, in which the ref loses sight of the puck and whistles it dead. Just because the CAMERA shows the puck clearly, does not mean the ref can see it. I agree it sucks when it happens to the team you like but it is hardly a call reserved only for the pink wings. Help me understand why the call was even relevant, they lost by 2 goals and the Stars' 3rd goal wasn't an empty netter.

Fat man...................By your comments it is clear you did not see the play. Trust me, you, nor anyone else has seen a "call" like this one. Honestly, look at it, you'll agree. You may not come here and admit it, but you know enough to agree that was an absurb ruling. There would be no reason for the ref to "intend" to blow the whistle. Prior to the puck going in the net, it was on May's stick. Step your game up man, at least watch what you are "commenting" on. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ufo boy...Unlike you, the sky in MY world is not littered with UFO's. Nor is my world saturated with conspiracies or whining. You see, I'm a GROWN UP. Yes, I have seen "dozens" of goals waved off because the ref had blown the whistle once he'd lost site of the puck. It happened to your pinkies in the playoffs against the Ducks and, as I said before, it cost Calgary 3 games last year. It sucks but it is NOT a freaking conspiracy. Your ladies lost by 2 goals anyway, right? Did Bettman stuff in a rebound for the Stars as well?? Grow a pair and QUIT CRYING, it's pathetic!

@ Leaf Nation : Perhaps you should have responded in the "headshots" thread...some people really got their knickers in a twist. Wow. That said, I can understand why some folks here would have been rather testy, that called sucked. I must say I always find it funny though when you have some Wings fans whining about how Canadian officials are screwing over the Wings because of their anti-European bias. Hmm....last time I checked Steve Yzerman is Canadian, Ken Holland is Canadian, Jim Nill is Canadian..oh and who's coaching Team Canada? That's right, Mike Babcock! The coach is the one who should be most annoyed with the poor officiating. If a team does not meet expectations, it's the COACH who's job is on the line. The players still get paid. Coaches get canned.
Also, isn't that May kid (you know the one who was robbed of a goal) a proud Canadian?
It's okay to cry nationality bias but not discuss international hockey? Uh, okay.

Anyway, Volchenkov from Ottawa and Grebeskov from Edmonton will probably make the Russian squad. Of course, now that Hitchcock has ruined another young player in Columbus (Filatov) he will be playing for Russia in the World Juniors. Still, I bet Canada wins their sixth straight WJ Gold to break their own record. Regarding America, Craig Anderson is American but I bet his play will start to fall off soon. He has never played more than 31 games in a season so the fatigue/pressure factor will start to come into play not to mention teams will be studying ALOT more Anderson tape than ever before. Miller will start, Thomas as back-up.

@121 Marc M, whilst I agree with your sentiments regarding booby clarke, the guy listing the penalty stats wasn't making a judgement he was listing STATS! If the flyers logged the most penalty minutes in the league, well there you go. Did they deserve to log the most PM? I'd say most likely yes. Is there a conspiracy against the Red Wings based on them being a Euro-centric team? Geez dude who are you? President of Alcoa?

Doug your post is idiotic as Bobby Clarke. Clarke has stocked his team with Neanderthals. Detroit is stocked with players that actually have some ice skating ability ad puck handling skills. The Redwings are over-penalized because they have a large number of European players that do not get calls from CANADIAN OFFICIALS ala Cindy Crybaby!

SO fat man ....... You seen this called dozens of times.
The puck goes in the net (legally, not kicked in or batted with a high stick), and then after the puck is in the net the ref blows the whistle and discovers the puck is in the net and then proclaims he had "intended" to blow the whistle when he lost sight of it (b/c the puck was in the net).

Not once or twice ....... but DOZENS !!!

Now I can say I have seen many goals that were disallowed because they had been kicked in, or maybe a high stick, or quite a few when they had the stupid rule that if your butt is hanging over the edge of the crease a goal is disallowed. And most, if not all of these goals were backed up by video replay.

But I have never seen where the puck goes in the goal, a whistle blows seconds later, the officials realize the puck had gone in and yet they disallow the goal. Even when video replay clearly shows the puck in the net seconds before the whistle had blown.
    Nope --------- first for me.

Tell me ........ what color is the sky in the world you live in where you have seen this dozens of times??

HEY Nwafa # 101 are you the guy who brings a knife to a gun fight? no i am not blind. i agree the puck was in the net, everyone could see that on the replays that the hall of fame announcers played over and over and over. but like you the announcces must be deaf. the call was not that the puck was not in the net, the call was that the whistle had blown. are you deaf? didn't you hear what was said? as far as the name calling i except your apology. but next time listen to what is said. and the ref's did a great job. they called all over the world to make sure the call was the right call. once again L I S T E N the next time. give the dead wings the goal and they still get beat 3 to 2.

Carolina was the least penalized team last year at 802 PIM, then Detroit at 824, and Minn was 3rd-least penalized at 889. Philadelphia was the most penalized at 1434 minutes, or 17.5 PIM/gm.

@ufo boy.....Ummm, do you even WATCH other teams play? I've seen this call happen dozens of times; last year costing Calgary 3 games I remember. The pink wings were the least penalized team and had 200 less PIM's than the next closest team last season; that HARDLY adds up to an anti-pink wing conspiracy. Halfwit! Then again, what should I expect from somebody that believes in ufo's???

I'm a Wings fan ....... have been for almost 2 decades.
    Conspiracy ------- I don't thnk so.
As many, mnay, many have pointed out, it was probably the worst call in hockey they had ever seen.
    Bad people make bad mistakes.
But then again ...... Malkin not getting a one-game suspension for instigating a fight near the end of a playoff game was also just a bad call by bad people.
And then all the non-calls that weren't made for crap done against Wings players.
And then again .... why does it seem like so many of these ridicules calls, or lack of, end up being against the Red Wings ???

Hmmmm .... maybe it does add up.
Don't remember alot of these "contoversial calls" ever going against Pittsburgh, or the Isles, or Montreal. Does seem like the Wings get their share .... plus a few more teams shares.

Let's hope and pray the two jokers that reffed the game last night don't make it too deep in the playoffs. God forbid they get to do the finals ... regardless of who is playing.

Again ...... just BAD PEOPLE making BAD CALLS.

Didn't see the game but, after reading this article, I was sure I'd be seeing the "Bettman leaguewide conspiracy" posts; and you ladies did not disappoint. Surely you homers realize that the pink wings aren't the ONLY victims of this call, RIGHT?????? I guess the most pathetic thing in this entire mess is coach Nocock claiming that the ref "never intended to blow the whistle"?? Now THAT'S an ALL TIME LOW for crying from a coach's position! I have no doubt she's coaching the right team.

So the two announcers are hall of famers, so that makes them good announcers? wayne whats his name is a hall of famer but he was not a good coach. what is your point? because your a hall of fame player, that makes you a good announcer. i don't think so. the ref's were the best last night. when the dead wings lost to the coyotes it was the league. they lost, no they get beat last night and it was the ref's. what was it when the dead wings lost 4 out of 5 to the pen's? great job ref's keep up the good work. speaking of blind how is the cataract kid gordie osgood doing? looked like him in the nets last night. i know the dead wings lost because of the goal judge. and again why were the fans leaving with 5 1/2 mintues to go? whats next, fans screaming red wings suck in deeeeetriot? nice job ref's give the wings the goal and they still lose 3 to2 hahahahahah

From Toronto: "The puck was in, blow the horn, and get the ref over here to talk about it."

The head man from video review said it was a goal and both LaRue and Auger went against them with that intent to blow the play down. It's bull**** and the league knows it. I had the same thing happen to me twice when I played as a goalie. The opposing player shot the puck. I was against the post. The puck somehow slipped under my pad in a goalmouth scramble. The ref whistled the play dead and nobody knew it where it was until I lifted my pad up. Turns out the puck was sitting barely behind the goal line. In the end I went and asked for an explanation. The only thing the ref told me was, "the puck is in the net, it's a goal." There was no video review or replays cuz it was a Bantam Hockey League game and those are 14 and 15 year-olds playing. It happened both times just like that in two different games at Yost Arena. Hell I even had my mask get knocked off and the puck went in. Even that goal ended up counting in Yost.

Overall I hate the men in stripes. I can't believe I actually was one of them for a full season just to get some $...

    Let's go Red Wings!

This one smells way too fishy. Toronto calls the refs to tell them it's a goal and the refs overrule Toronto. I would not put it past these refs that they had a hand in determining the outcome. This is too strange. The audio/video replay clearly proved that the ref did not blow the whistle til after the puck was in the net. If he was on the up and up, then "intent" would not come into the picture. The players did not stop playing until they figured out where the puck was, so how do you - mr referee - explain that?? Then 2 seconds later, he blew the whistle. There needs to be some investigation into the outside "influence" angle. I'm wondering if NBA refs can skate .....

I believe that a review system should be implemented in all sports after each game and if an official continues to make bad calls they are dismissed as the integrity of the game must be maintained.
The idea that an official would have blown a whistle is a ridiculous rule and should be eliminated in hockey, in reference to the Red Wing game last night that was one of the worst calls I have seen, from Toronto back to the game officials.

Thank you Doctor! @108 Az, it's not just one guy and this clown came on board 20 minutes after I posted my note. He's tying a lousy call in a Detroit-Dallas game to a League wide conspiracy to help the Pens get a softer Western Conference Finals opponent!? WTF. He must also think that Gary Bet-Man's Great Great Great Grandpappy was involved in the Lincoln assassination. His goal was to ensure more Northern involvement in the South and thus when his offspring 130 years later became commissioner of a then unknown league of a sport played on ice, the Southerners would be more receptive of his master plan of expansion! That's pretty much the level of logic of his statement! I know most sensible Wings fans are saying nothing of the sort, but jeesh I see this kind of pablam I can't help but jump at it.

Dutch-Cmon man one person cries conspiracy and you are going to lump the entire Red Wings fan base into tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists? It was a horrible bull@#$% call no doubt about it but a conspiracy? Hell no it was just the refs being the refs. What makes this a bit of a bigger deal is that it would have been the game tying goal and would have swayed momentum. If that goal had counted there very well probably wouldnt have been a third Dallas goal. The Stars got a break and I hope they enjoy it. its not like it realy matters that much its just a regular season game. now if Detroit by some freak chance misses the playoffs by 2 points......this will be a big deal.

There you go, Mark M #104 proving my point. I hope Reynolds has a good supply of tin foil they can expedite to Detroit stat! Good grief, the Refs blow a call on a Brad May goal vs. Dallas and Crosby and the Pens are the benefactors? OK, I guess if you apply Nwafian logic that makes sense. Um last I checked, the Cowboys, I mean Stars scored a 3rd goal in regulation and the final was 3-1, again I have to apply Nwafian logic to understand how wiping out one goal would directly lead to this loss.

Bad call yes, but sheeze, you want another strike for 3 years? That's a little extreme. That year off from hockey was one of the longest years of my life. I'll take the occasional bad call over no hockey at all. And yes, there have been plenty of calls like that against the Stars too. Karma maybe?

Apparent goal by Brad May, oh you mean the goal that Brad May scored, right? I have been playing hockey since I was three for forty one years. There is one thing that is absolute. If the puck crosses the goal line and the referee does not blow his whistle or make any attempt to blow his whistle before the puck crossed the goal line, IT IS A GOAL. The NHL is attempting to hijack the Detroit Redwings season this year in some twisted backlash to get Cindy Crosby a second Stanley Cup. The NHL does not want another repeat finals(they want a weak opponent for the Penguins) and the only way to insure that it does not occur is to keep the Redwings out of the playoffs. Thus far this season poor referee work has cost the Redwings at least five points in the standings. Last year the teams that missed the playoffs missed it by one and two points in each conference respectively.

Man I hate to see this. Anything to fuel the cries of the Detroit Tin Foil Hat Society is not a good thing. Only thing I can figure is understandably the Refs would be hard pressed to believe Brad May had scored a goal. Otherwise it was a crap call. Thought that was what the purpose of Replay and the "War Room" was for. Anyway, Dallas scored again in regulation so it isn't as if they won 3-1 with an Empty Netter but of course who knows how things will play out in a 2-2 vs. 2-1 game. What happened to Osgood? Don't tell me Babcock really believes Jimmy the Answer Howard is the Answer! Oh well, guess it's good to get him some seasoning. Saw a couple of posts beefing about sloppy defense, well the answer to that problem is a phone call away.
