Miller and Sabres snap Flyers’ 5-game win streak

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Tyler Ennis(notes) described his first game in the NHL as an awesome experience.

Ennis scored his first NHL goal and Ryan Miller(notes) stopped 29 shots to help the Buffalo Sabres snap the Philadelphia Flyers’ five game winning streak, 3-2 on Saturday night.

Ennis, the 26th pick in the 2008 draft, earned a spot in the Buffalo lineup in place of injured right winger Drew Stafford(notes).

“You dream of playing in the NHL, and that first goal was just indescribable,” Ennis said. “It was really just extreme excitement hopping on the ice for the first time, a pretty awesome feeling.”

Stafford sustained a hip flexor injury Friday night against Calgary while playing in his 200th NHL game. Ennis was recalled from Portland of the AHL and arrived in Philadelphia about 90 minutes before the game.

“I thought he (Ennis) played a great game,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “He gave us some energy, he made a couple of great plays. He could have had a couple of goals in the game … and he even took a run at (Chris) Pronger.”

Thomas Vanek(notes) and Paul Gaustad(notes) also scored for the Sabres, who never trailed and won their third straight game.

Pronger and Jeff Carter(notes) netted third-period goals for the Flyers.

Miller (12-2-1) was aided by a strong Buffalo defense that constantly thwarted the Flyers from in-close. He was at his best midway through the second period when he stopped Danny Briere(notes) and Scott Hartnell(notes) on the doorstep on successive flurries.

“They’ve been playing smart,” Miller said of the defense. “Our defensemen don’t allow the other team to get the puck where they want it. That sets everything up and makes it a little easier for all the other guys.”

Vanek put the Sabres ahead during a power play at 3:11 of the first period with a one-timer from the slot.

Ennis made it 2-0 at 14:50 of the second, sending a wrist shot from just below the left circle that sailed under the armpit of Ray Emery(notes), who made 22 saves.

“We made it harder by playing catch-up hockey with penalties in the first period,” Flyers coach John Stevens said. “We got frustrated a little bit and allowed them to get a little momentum.”

Pronger brought the Flyers to within 2-1 at 2:43 of the third when he snapped a shot through a screen, but Gaustad restored Buffalo’s two-goal edge at 6:25 on a power play.

Carter scored a short-handed goal during a skirmish in front of the net at 10:21 to again bring the Flyers within one goal.

Briere said that the Sabres were still thinking about the Flyers’ 5-2 win in Buffalo on Nov. 6.

“I think their coaching staff used that game as motivation,” said Briere, a former Sabres player.

NOTES: Philadelphia LW James van Riemsdyk(notes) was scratched (flu). … Flyers D Ryan Parent(notes) returned after missing four games (lower body). … Sabres RW Jason Pominville(notes) hit the post during a power play late in the first period.

As for you're post I find it jejune, odious and your description of the Flyer's fans very captious, when they are really effusive.
Since your a nebbish person and a puzzewit I don't expect you to understand, whine on blatherskite.

Cheer for the other team when they score? I'm amazed how you got anything remotely close to that out of my statement. "Are you an idiot?"

Judging by the poor grammar, irrelevant assumption and an insult, I'm willing to guess you are from Philadelphia?

"Wanna talk about classy might want to look at your own fan base"

Yes, let's discuss. Feel free to review the footage from last night's Buffalo/Calgary game for example. If you can, please show me if any Sabres fans spilled beer while yelling and giving the finger to Calgary players after they scored.

I find it extremely funny that you are suggesting another fan base has poor behavior, when it is the Flyers fan base that is notorious for being the worst behaved in the entire league. It's the freakin' kettle calling the pot.

Dude, I was standing in line like all the other schlubs, minding my own business, waiting for my turn at the stall when a jerk in an orange jersey shoulder bumps me. I let it slide. He came back and did it on the other shoulder, and when I still didn't do anything he then stood next to me till I turned and said "'Sup? You enjoy the game man?" "Wah?" said our resident Neanderthal. "I said, did you have a good time." "Uh, yeah." At which point he puts his arm around my shoulder and says "Wherever you go man, I'm right there with you. I'm there for you man." "Uh, did you just offer to hold my junk while I pee?" "Wha?" "Yeah, nevermind bro, I'm out. Enjoy your night." I walked out without having watered the flowers and hiked my way back to my car to take my lumps while fighting traffic. That dude was off the rails.
Look, just own up to the fact that Flyer fans, as a whole, I'm sure there are individual cases of anomalously decent people, lack anything close to self control or decorum. That's who and what Flyers fan are. Fly your @#$% flag proudly, I say. Just admit it. It's the city that booed Santa, but cheered for Michael Vick, after all. Ladies and gentlemen, the Visigoths live among us, and they bleed orange.

Why do Flyers fans get so defensive when they're called out for being hooligans? Because they know their critics are right. I was at both the Flyers/Sabres games in Buffalo on the 6th and in Philly on the 14th, and let me tell you, Philly fans were horrible. When my buddy and I were in Buffalo (he being the Flyers fan, I for the Sabres) he wore his jersey and was approached by both Sabres and Flyers fans alike. The opposing players were not taunted on the ice, and while the Buffalo crowd didn't cheer when the Flyers scored, they certainly didn't boo, throw things, shout curses or give an obscene gesture.
In Philly on the other hand, the hom crowd hasselled anyone they saw in a Sabres jersey, taunted both the players and the refs, and, I can attest to this first-hand, were both sore winners and sore losers. When I went to the Sabres/Flyers game in Philly last year (in which the Fly Guys won) a drunk Flyers fan tried to pick a fight with me in the bathroom because I had on a Sabres jersey. Philly fans are know for being the worst no matter what the sport. Eagles fans have thrown snowballs with batteries in them at opposing teams. Don't forget, this is the town that booed Santa Clause.

As for losing Miller, lose the season, well, maybe. But Miller's not the one making the goals. Miller wasn't the one that came out stron on the forecheck and forced the Flyers to wheel back on a lot of charges. Miller wasn't the one that cleared the puck on every PK. Millsy does a hell of a job, and he's the nucleus of the team for sure, but he's not the only arrow in the quiver. 25 point and tops in the Northeast attest to that.

Is Dutch-bag a closet Pronger fan? a closet Emery fan? Or maybe even a closet Hartnell fan?
In any event, we all know Dutch-bag is in the closet, just tearing up inside keeping his real feelings all bottled up.

@39 Admiral Kirk, stop giving the flyers so much credit, they lost the first of 5 straight SC Finals series in 1976, so the proper chant is "Seven-T-Five" "7-T-5". @40 Buffalo wins the Cup, bold prediction especially after the last two subpar seasons. Playing well so far.

Ray Emery is the #1 goalie in the "Hot" section of the "Hot/Not Hot" players????

He's had good numbers, and the Flyers had a mini 5-game streak going, but how in the HELL does Ryan Miller not even merit a mention in that list? WTF Yahoo? Throw the Sabres a freakin' BONE, why dontcha?

Actually, don't bother... I kinda like flying under the radar. Sabres win the Cup this year - Miller gets the Vezina, and Ruff wins his second Jack Adams trophy. You heard it here first.

@26-28 Buffalo fans, You're preaching to the choir here. The good news here with the thuggish, classless, crass, mentally unstable behavior by flyer fans is that when they lose, and they will lose (Death, taxes, flyer failure only things you can count on in life) it makes it all the more enjoyable. Imagine Sid's delight picking that puck up from behind the net, circling around and slamming it home into an empty net and a 5-3 Penguins victory over the once again vanquished flyers. That the Pens finished it all up right this time made it all the more enjoyable. So let them behave like the rabid apes they are, beating their a$$es is all the more enjoyable. BTW you're right brett hull should be booed, he's a puck hogging charlatan.

buffalo fans cheered for 99 when he got the league scoring lead, so i guess we sabre fans arent crude and rude as most of the ones in philly. a couple years ago i was at the last game of the year in philly, biron was in net and i cheered for him while wearing a sabres jersey. o thats right that game had no meaning, but he still is a favorite player even though he doesnt play here anymore. and here in buffalo it is funny how many retired players and coaches call this home when they leave the game. i think that speaks loud about the passion we have for players and just regular people in general.
and in philly the fans can be obnoxious, just like anywhere im sure its not the whole barrel rotting but a few who get the cameras and pics in the news.

What does "Crosby sucks" chants have to do with watching Ovie or Malkin play? Oh, you think Crosby is the best player in the NHL? What a joke!!! He is not even the best player on your team. He couldn't even carry the team to a win without Malkin. The only thing Crosby is is the captain of the good ship lollipop. Malkin is the true "C" on that team and should be the one wearing it.

Kaleta got away with a pretty ugly and potentially very dangerous hit on Parent right off the bat. Should have been a boarding call - Parent went head first into the boards from several feet out. Luckily Parent bounced right back. But the league needs to call that. Already enough concussions in the sport.

@ Ron A - I saw ONE guy getting pissed off. I saw a bunch of other people smiling. Philly fans are passionate. Guy probably spent a lot of money for those seats and the opposing team was celebrating in front of him. I'd be mad too. And last time I checked, hitting a goal post does not equal a goal. That's like saying if the goalie didn't make a good stop or if the defenseman's stick didn't get in the way, it would be a goal.

@ 20 kyd1 - right on. There will always be Philly haters. Let them hate. NY/NJ/Pittsburgh/Washington... everybody hates Philly. It would be nice to see some more championships for our city - but our teams have given us a lot to cheer for for a lot of years. The haters are just jealous.

@ 27 b - You are full of sh1t. Biron was a decent goalie and Briere has yet to live up to his salary and is injury prone. Just having a few ex-Sabres on our team did not make the Flyers the team that they are. Hitch and Clarke left after a crappy start to the next season after the Flyers lost 2 team leaders (Primeau and Desjardins) in the off season. If anything the Flyers rebound was more related to the Forsberg trade.

Wall S, you have a very amusing learning disability.

Ron didn't say, at any point, that he thought Flyers fans should have cheered. Never. Not even a hint. He said that he didn't think Flyers fans jumping out of their seats in seething anger to give the finger was a respectable and mature option. What is your learning disability? Why can't you read?

Regarding your Canes comment, ok, let's play a game:
Flyers fans haven't tasted Stanley Cup glory since the 70's, and let's say this season you guys get to the Conference Finals against a southern expansion team (lets say Atlanta) that has only had fans for about 10 years. The series goes to game 7, but now you guys are without 4 of YOUR starting defensemen AND Briere. You guys are winning in the final period, just 18 minutes from the Stanley Cup Finals... your fans have waited so long, you can almost taste it... then Atlanta goes on to win it in the final 18 minutes. Your amazing run is over, you should have won, and now Atlanta fans are rideculing your team and city, calling you f@gs, and bragging about how their team ended your amazing run. All the while, they can't even sell out their arena, while your fans have been waiting, loyal, for decades.

I'm willing to bet that you guys would act/feel exactly the same as we did. Probably worse considering who you guys are.

everything you say is correct Ron A., the problem is not the message but those receiving it. Philly fans are bi-polar. They think that you either cheer a player, or throw batteries at them. To them not doing one logically means you must be doing the other. So when someone draws attention to how classless Philly fan is because they gave the finger to a player, they automatically see that as saying 'you should cheer that player'. On a side note, Philly's hockey turnaround can be traced back to a serious humiliation the Sabres gave them a couple years ago. Not only did they start cleaning house immediately after that game (Clarke and Hitchcock), but they began restocking with former Sabres (Biron and later Briere) helping them to have a great run in the playoffs the following year. Your welcome Philly.

First off, there is no way in HELL it was 50% Flyers fans at ANY Sabres home game. Maybe in the 1975 Finals when we were still a new team, I dunno, but definitely not anytime recently. A 20/80 split is being generous... Maybe you didn't see the '08 Winter Classic in Buffalo where roughly 65,000 Sabres fans attended, and 8-10,000 more were watching the game on the jumbotron in HSBC. Or maybe you didn't see the 10,000 people that were outside HSBC in the "Party in the Plaza" in addition to the 18,690 people inside during our 2 year Conference Finals run...

Only when some Canadian teams come to town does it look 1/3 full of rival fans. There's no way to stop other fans from buying 10-15 of our tickets online in advance, and taking a trip to Buffalo. It has nothing to do with a lack of fan support. Buffalo is obsessed with hockey, in fact, Erie county has 9 current NHL players, which is the most out of any county in the entire nation.

Second, regarding Philly. I lived 20 minutes away in West Chester for two years. I went to 6 or 7 games while I lived there because, unlike Flyers fans I actually like hockey as a sport, not just my team. Not only did I experience how out of control people in Philly are every day, but I got to experience the worst of it when I went to Flyers games. It was like entering a Howler Monkey enclosure; I've never seen so many fully grown children in my life.

Third, what is with this "cheering the other team" BS?????????? Is everybody slow here? I never once said to cheer the other team. I'm talking about how I think it was @#$%ed up that Flyers fans were jumping out of their seats in just unreal amounts of anger and hatred to give some rookie the finger when he scored his first career goal. I never said anything about cheering the other team or being happy for the kid, but jumping out of your seat in seething anger and giving him the finger? I saw that alllllllllll around the arena everytime I was there. In Buffalo when the other team scores, we usually yell something like "Damnit!", then sit down in our seats and act like adults.

And fourth, what's with all this "Lose Miller, lose season" BS? No kidding, our backup goaltending sucks (even though Biron will be on the market soon and expressed a desire to come back to Buffalo). How about this, YOU lose Emery or he starts playing like his old self, and YOU lose your season. Like, no kidding guys............ it can be said both ways. I dunno what you are trying to get at, because you act like we're the Leafs or Canes or Isles with Miller as a goalie. We do have a potent offense that is in a serious funk right now.

I'm done with this thread, this is getting old.
