Fleischmann rallies Capitals past Panthers 7-4

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—Even without two-time MVP Alex Ovechkin(notes), the Washington Capitals are still quite adept at putting the puck in the net—especially against the defensively challenged Florida Panthers.

Tomas Fleischmann(notes) scored twice during a five-goal third period, and the short-handed Capitals beat the Panthers 7-4 Saturday night for a sweep of their home-and-home series.

Washington played a third straight game without Ovechkin, who has an upper body injury. The Capitals were also without injured defensemen Mike Green(notes) and Jeff Schultz(notes), both of whom were hurt Friday night during a 4-1 victory in Florida.

But Washington prevailed anyway, amassing a season-high seven goals in the process.

“Alex is a tough guy to replace, but we’ve got four lines that can score,” said Brooks Laich(notes), who had a goal and an assist.

Mike Knuble(notes) scored twice, and Mathieu Perreault(notes) and Quintin Laing(notes) tallied 40 seconds apart for Washington.

“If they win this hockey game, it’s a split and we look at it as a missed opportunity,” Laich said.

The Capitals trailed 3-2 before Perreault scored his first NHL goal with 17:39 to go. Laing then scored his second of the season, and Fleischmann extended his point-scoring streak to a career-high five games with a goal off an excellent pass from Nicklas Backstrom(notes).

Knuble made it 6-4 with 8:54 remaining, and Fleischmann scored again with 6:22 left. Fleischmann has five goals and two assists in six games since being sidelined with a blood clot in his leg.

“Green and Ovie aren’t in the lineup. I think that says something: that our other players are good,” Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said. “People seem to forget that.”

Cory Stillman(notes) scored twice for the Panthers, and goalie Scott Clemmensen(notes) absorbed his first loss with Florida after starting off 2-0-0.

“It was like Murphy’s Law. Anything that could go wrong, went wrong,” Clemmensen said. “We weren’t very good down low; there were a lot of open guys around the net. It looked like a fire drill down there. It was total chaos from my perspective.”

The Capitals repeatedly broke free along the backboards before passing to open teammates in front of the net.

“One thing we need to do is work on our coverage down low and behind the net,” Clemmensen said. “I’m not sure how it gets so bad at times. It’s a matter of knowing responsibility. Forget about tonight; we’re not quite there yet as far as taking care of our own end.”

Panthers defenseman Bryan McCabe(notes) preferred to give credit to the Capitals.

“They are a very skilled team with or without Alex,” he said. “They’re one of the best offensive teams in the league, and they showed that tonight.”

The Panthers took their first lead at 16:03 of the second period when Kenndal McArdle(notes) sent a backhand pass from the backboards to Michal Repik(notes), who beat goalie Jose Theodore(notes) with a wrist shot in the slot to make it 3-2.

That capped a three-goal period for Florida—on only 12 shots.

Washington went up 1-0 in the first period when Knuble scored from the right side of the crease after getting the puck from Brendan Morrison(notes), who weaved behind the net with a pass from Laich.

Early in the second period, Stillman fired a shot that Theodore tipped with his glove before the puck bounced off the left post. Seconds later, however, Michael Frolik(notes) jammed in the rebound of a shot by McCabe to make it 1-1.

Laich put the Capitals back in front with a power-play goal at 6:17, but 19-year-old rookie Dmitry Kulikov(notes) answered for the Panthers with his first career goal midway through the period.

Notes: Washington has scored first in 14 of 17 games, including each of the last six. … Frolik had two goals in Florida’s first three games, then went 11 straight games without one before his second-period tally. … The Capitals are 2-1 without Ovechkin this season and 3-4 in the seven games he’s missed since joining the team in 2005.

"it was total chaos from my perspective" Clemmensen said. Really, Scott? You're not playing behind the New Jersey Devil trap defense anymore. Better get used to it!

dropthegloves - Anderson is an excellent goalie and proved it last year in Florida. He just never got the chance to establish himself while sitting behind Tomas Vokoun. Now that he's found a home in Colorado, we're starting to see him emerge as a solid goalie for the Avs...and as much as I hate to admit it being a Wings fan, I think the Avs are gonna go places this year.

Bad news. Wings are riddled with injuries. No J Franzen, V Filppula and now J Williams will be out at least 2 months. Who is next? Avs, Coyotes, and Kings are makings some noises. They might not win a Stanley Cup this year, but they will surprise a lot of people. Who would have thought Craig Anderson was a good goalie? What about Ilya Bryzalov? He already had 3 shutout. Bankcrupcy judge has approved the sale of Coyotes to the NHL, and they are looking for buyers. When the Kings played against Coyotes on Monday 11/2/09, the attendant was 6,555 or maybe less. Kings won 5-3. Ducks went there on Sat 10/31/09 the attendant was 5,850. 5,800 was the smallest crowd. Any way, Ducks lost in a shootout 3-2 if I am not mistaken. Speaking of Ducks, they beat Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 last night at Honda Center in Anaheim. Ducks are 6-7-2, 14 points dead last, Kings are 10-5-2, 22 points 2nd, Coyotes are 10-7-0, 20 points. Kings will go on the road for 5 games starting at Windy City Mon 11/9/09. Kings will play on Nov 11, Veterans' Day. Happy Veterans Day everybody. Go Kings!

I just watched the tape of this game. It's good to see that the CAPS got a lot of their goals near the goal crease, and not just perimeter shots. None of these goals were pretty, but those are the kind that you need to win championships. This was a total team effort, although the defense was a little sloppy for some of the Panther goals. But the biggest news of the day may have been that Michael Nylander has apparently agreed to waive his no movement clause. As a result, the CAPS have put him on waivers as of yesterday. This is a big step for the CAPS in getting his $4.875M salary cap hit off Washington's books for the next two seasons. CAPS!!!!

The net-minding looked a bit suspect, but other than that the team really picked up their game. Maybe someone should tell Semin that he is a better player outside the penalty box, but other than that great win. SMILING BOB HAS SPOKEN.

excellent win tonight guys! That late 3rd period PP looked sick, and I can't say enough about Morrison and Knuble stepping up with A-O out. I'm annoyed at Semin getting run constantly and I think its time to bring on some kind of skating gorilla to teach other teams a little respect... someone call up Gordie Howe (j/k)

In the last 3 games we've seen Sloan with 2G, Perreault with 1G2A and even Laing with a G, so great work 4th line!

NatsCapsSkins. As there was no morning skate this morning (Boudreau called it off), it's hard to say who will be in net for the CAPS. Usually it's the goalie who leaves the ice first during game day morning skate. But I would guess Varly, due to Theo playing last night.
And the Washington Post (Tarik El-Bashir) is saying that Green and Schultz are both game-time decisions. Erskine and Sloan could be on defense tonight if they are no-goes. Go CAPS!!!!

Hey Spock any word on Green or Shultz for this game. I know Ovie still can't go, and is Varly in net?
