Avs move to 6-0 at home with 4-3 shootout win

  • Print

DENVER (AP)—Chris Stewart(notes) formulated a plan as he fidgeted on the bench, readying himself just in case the shootout dragged out that long.

When his turn came, Stewart went to work, skating down the side, cutting over and lining the puck under the pads of Chicago goalie Antti Niemi(notes)—just as he envisioned.

Stewart scored in the eighth round of the shootout, helping the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche remain unbeaten at home with a 4-3 victory over the Blackhawks on Friday night.

In truth, Stewart’s plan of action wasn’t an entirely unique strategy. He picked it up from teammate Milan Hejduk(notes).

“I just came off the wing and did the old Hejduk—shoot low blocker,” Stewart said.

Dustin Byfuglien(notes) had a chance to tie, but sent his slap shot just wide.

The two teams have made lengthy shootouts a habit this season, going nine rounds on Oct. 10, with the Blackhawks prevailing in that one.

Brent Seabrook(notes) thinks he knows why.

“We both have good goaltenders and good shooters,” Seabrook said.

Craig Anderson(notes) returned to the net after receiving a rare night off. The Avalanche goalie stopped 29 shots, including a vital save in overtime when he turned back Patrick Sharp’s(notes) shot.

“He gives us a chance to win every night and he did it again tonight,” Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said.

Ryan O’Reilly(notes) scored twice for Colorado in regulation, while David Jones(notes) added a short-handed goal.

With the win, the Avalanche moved to 6-0 at Pepsi Center this season, matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins to start a season.

Byfuglien, Duncan Keith(notes) and Andrew Ladd(notes) scored for the Blackhawks, who lost for the second straight night.

Tired legs? Troy Brouwer(notes) didn’t feel that was the case.

“We have a couple of days off so the back-to-back games aren’t too bad,” he said. “We came out and had a great start, but we weren’t able to maintain it throughout the game.”

The Avalanche missed their first two attempts in the shootout, while Patrick Kane(notes) scored as he dribbled a puck through Anderson’s legs.

Anderson said all he was hoping for was one more chance.

Marek Svatos(notes) gave it to him. The Avalanche’s last shooter, Svatos scored high on Niemi to force extra rounds.

Anderson took it from there.

“The team did a great job of getting me the lead and I just had to close it out,” said Anderson, who started 15 straight games before taking a break Wednesday.

O’Reilly and Jones scored 59 seconds apart in the second period to give the Avalanche a 3-2 lead. Jones had a short-handed goal as he flew down the left side and flipped the puck past Niemi. It was Jones’ second goal this season with the Avalanche a skater down.

Late in the second, Chicago tied it at 3 when Ladd poked in the puck that was sitting in front of the net.

Both teams boast a bench full of youthful energy, with the average age on each roster just a shade under 27 years old.

However, Chicago was without one of their young stars as captain Jonathan Toews(notes) missed a sixth straight game with a concussion.

Kane and Kris Versteeg(notes) helped picked up the slack, each assisting on two goals in an entertaining first period.

Chicago jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Byfuglien early in the game, followed by Keith’s shot over Anderson’s shoulder just over 4 minutes later.

But the lead quickly evaporated.

“We came out and had the start that we wanted, and got up a couple goals and got a little bit complacent,” Brouwer conceded.

The Avalanche worked their way back into the game and Stewart took it from there—just like his coach figured he would.

“I had him in Lake Erie (of the AHL) and he had a knack for scoring in the shootout,” Sacco said. “I had a good feeling that when he was going, he was going to score.”

NOTES: Avalanche D Ruslan Salei(notes) (back) said he’s making steady progress toward a return. Asked how much longer he’d be sidelined, Salei said, “More than a week, less than a month.” … Hejduk played in his 800th game, the fourth player in franchise history to reach that milestone. … Avs D John-Michael Liles(notes) injured his shoulder in the first period and didn’t return.

Avs are 6-0 at home. The beat the Hawks in shootout. Avs are making noise. Kings, Avs, and Coyotes are making some noises. Kings are 10-4-2 good for 22 points. Kings vs Preds at Staples Center today at 1:00PM Pacific. It nice to see the Kings snapped Pens 7-0 on the road. Crosby was held scoreless, he's got 1 shot no goal and a -1? Go Kings!

The Avs have grit now with a coach who employs a style that preaches attack, forecheck and backchecking...puck pursuit and constant pressure. Sure, most claim this is how they want their teams to play, but most coaches and teams don't have such a young, impressionable team. Not to mention many of those young players come from his system back in Lake Erie.

I'm not about to say I predicted this, bc I had them fighting for the 8th spot at best. Still, I'm loving the fact the Avs actually have two KEY components they haven't had in years....a goaltender and a coach/coaching staff. It's so nice to see someone adjust in-game to troubles and to actually have PP and PK units. Sure Colorado dealt with a ton of injuries last year and I heard it as an excuse for both Quennville and Granato over the last few years. Yet look at Sacco and the Avs this year, many injuries and player after player continue to step in and play the role they are asked. It's called coaching and a good support system. Sacco LITERALLY can be given credit for both right now.

@4 Killing Joke, Ross McKeon, like many Sports Journalists winds up with half their diet being Crow! He surmised before the Cup Finals that essentially the two teams (Penguins and Wings) were the same teams only in 2008 Pittsburgh had Maid Marian Hossa and in 2009 Detroit did. By that standard the 2009 Finals "weren't even fair" (Detroit in 5 according to McKeon) he has since planted the Penguins in 1st place on his Power Chart which I guess is fair but I'd prefer they be off his radar screen. Be glad the critics picked the Avs 30th, more chance to make them look ridiculous. I will say though folks, I don't see the Avs hanging around at the Top of the charts by season's end, but for a young rebuilding team a WC playoff spot, which I do see them getting, will be a hell of an accomplishment.

@Big Al: We have played Detroit twice, and beaten them both times. We played Chicago twice, and won the second game. San Jose and Vancouver both beat us the second meeting...in their own buildings. At this point, the most appropriate prediction would simply be that the Avs are going to split the meeting with the other top teams, and possibly steal an away game here and there. But yes, it has to be played on the ice...otherwise SJ would have a Cup banner in their rafters.

Killing Joke #4. Have patience. Once the other teams have played the Avs once, and have figured out their style, the balloon will burst. No one can predict what will happen, it still must be played on the ice. It's a long season, but enjoy while you can.

What impresses me the most is that quite a few of their wins are "come from behind" victories. A lot of young teams tend to throw in the towel after getting down a goal or two, but not this young Avalanche team. Even after getting down early in some games they still believe they're going to win and that belief is working for them, even against teams like Detroit and now Chicago.

Defying expectations and silencing critics are some of the best things an athlete or team can do. I've never been more proud to call myself an Avalanche fan then I am right now.

    Go Avs!

Congrats are in order for the young Avs. Like the Hawks last year, they're playing with no pressure and are out working their opponents. I'm impressed!

I love seeing young new players who are so talented in O'Reilley (sp?) and Duchesne...looks like they don't miss Sakic at all, and filled in their biggest weak-spot which was in goalie.
