Blake scores winner, Maple Leafs beat Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—The Toronto Maple Leafs staked their claim to 29th in the NHL.

The Carolina Hurricanes, meanwhile, are all alone in last place.

Jason Blake(notes) scored on a power play with 8:24 left and Jonas Gustavsson(notes) made 34 saves to help the Maple Leafs win for the second time in 14 games this season, 3-2 over the Hurricanes on Friday night in a matchup of the NHL’s two worst teams.

John Mitchell(notes) and Nikolai Kulemin(notes) also scored for Toronto, which has earned points in their last six games.

“We’re starting to move in the right direction,” Blake said. “Tonight was a good effort. Obviously, Gustavsson made some key saves at key times that were game-changers. It was a good team effort.”

Brandon Sutter(notes) and Sergei Samsonov(notes) scored for Carolina, off to the worst start in franchise history. The Hurricanes (2-10-3) are winless in their last 11 games.

“There are no options,” Canes coach Paul Maurice said. “You just have to persevere in these times.”

Blake scored on a wrist shot from the slot. With Rod Brind’Amour(notes) off for holding, Blake’s shot ripped off the right post before ricocheting into the net.

“It was a relief,” Blake said.

Sutter opened the scoring midway through the first period. Brind’Amour kicked the puck toward Sutter, who backhanded it past Gustavsson’s glove from the slot.

The Hurricanes took a two-goal advantage a little less than 10 minutes later when Gustavsson couldn’t control Andrew Alberts’(notes) shot from the point, allowing Samsonov to clean up the rebound in front of the net.

“Whenever they scored, we seemed to sag at that point—maybe feeling sorry for ourselves,” Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. “We have to get mad at some point. I said to the team, ‘We’ve only got one win in 13 games. When’s somebody going to get mad?”’

Hastened, Toronto tied it early in the second.

Mitchell scored first when he slapped a shot from just inside the blue line past Cam Ward(notes), who was screened by Brind’Amour. Some 6 minutes later, Alexei Ponikarovsky(notes) set up Kulemin with a nice centering pass from the corner, allowing Kulemin to tip the puck through Ward’s legs.

Gustavsson made a number of tough saves midway through the third period to keep the score tied before preserving Toronto’s lead in the dying seconds with a flurry of tough saves.

“To be down 2-0 and the way that’s gone for us this year—I think that showed a lot of determination,” Wilson said. “I’m proud of the guys that they didn’t give up.”

In addition to last place in the overall standings, Carolina also has scored the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference. It hasn’t scored on its last 25 power plays.

The Hurricanes were without two of their leading scorers in Eric Staal(notes) and Ray Whitney(notes). They are sidelined by upper-body injuries.

“Obviously frustrating when you’re not winning,” Sutter said. “We played well, so we have to look at the positives.”

NOTES: The Maple Leafs have given up the first goal in 13 of 14 games. … Zach Boychuk(notes) played his first game of the season for Carolina. He had a breakaway in the second period, but couldn’t convert. … Carolina has been outscored 22-9 in the second period.

In fact, your probably the only person I hope Blake seeks out and puts a hockey skate to the face! Hopeffly the scar will remind you to watch you F'n moouth!

5 straight games with at least a point. It is still an accomplishment for the Leafs. March on tonight to play the Wings. Let's see if we can get the point streak going.

staal was at a cool 5.6 shooting percentage before he went out. i wouldnt really say hes a scoring threat this year. hopefully the injury had a lot to do with it. its hard to say if they wouldve made any difference based on their previous performances.

dennylambert!!, actually having staal and whitney would have probably made a difference, especially in a 3-2 game. also whitney would be in 4th place on the leafs for points which is sad considering the awful year he is having and already being 15 games into the season and staal can easily make a difference in a game even if he is having a bad year he still always a scoring threat.

@T, if a team being bad was the only requirement for a team moving, then teams like PITT, Chicago, and Washington would have left a couple of years ago when they all sucked and toronto would be leaving this year. despite having a crappy team, carolina's attendance is currently ranked 20th in the league beating teams like New Jersey, Colorado, and Anaheim.

hah, "hurricanes were without two of their leading scorers in eric staal and ray whitney."

staal has 5 pts in 13 games.
whitney has 8 pts in 14 games.

would their presence really have made any difference??

I would have thought the mighty, knowledgeable Leafs fans could figure out mediocrity when they see it...your team is NOTHING....going nowhere. The Canes are awful. Testing the Wings tomorrow night. ROFLMAO....I hate the Wings, but good luck in that contest. You guys are 1980's Whalers material...win a couple...lose a lot...rinse and repeat.

    Have fun sucking this season...again.

leaf nation, i'm right here. congratulations on beating the lowly hurricanes(barely). i know you guys have points in 6 straight but look where this little streak has got you guys (in second last place). look, you guys just barely beat a team that has their best players injured and now your playing an injury riddled red wings that's not even in a playoff spot right now, but hey this team is a good test for the maple leafs. You know i can make fun of the leafs and keep going on on how bad they have played but that wouldn't be fair to you not being able to make fun of my favorite team (ottawa senators). so now that i told you my favorite team, start making fun of them so that i can come up with some comebacks.

A Kimbo where are you now? We won! Points in our last six games. Could have won all of those games. We're on the move upwards slowly but surely. Clawing our way slowly back to respectability.
Red Wings in Toronto tomorrow night. Good test for us to see if we can keep getting points.
Got a major league goalie finally in Jonas Gustavsson. Optimism Leaf fans, optimism. Things are looking up. We found a way to win tonight. We must start scoring first though. That is ridiculous. It must be driving Wilson completely apoplectic.
    GO LEAFS GO!
