Unlikely scorers lift Canucks over Wild

  • Print

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP)—The Vancouver Canucks are so banged up, they will take offense from anybody these days.

That’s just what they got against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.

Tough guy Darcy Hordichuk(notes) and newly signed Matt Pettinger(notes) each scored their first goals of the season, forming an unlikely pair to lead the short-handed Canucks to a 5-2 victory.

“You’re not going to win with one line and you’re not going to win with two lines,” right winger Mikael Samuelsson(notes) said. “You’re going to win with your whole team and that’s what we did tonight. It’s huge.”

Hordichuk scored his first goal in 50 games on his first shot of the season. Pettinger was signed off the street on Monday to bolster a depleted roster.

“I haven’t had a lot of shots this year, but it’s not how many shots you have, it’s how many you make count,” Hordichuk said. “It was nice to have one go in.”

Mason Raymond(notes) and Henrik Sedin(notes) also scored for the Canucks, who have won three in a row and seven of nine despite missing seven players with injuries. Alex Burrows(notes) added an empty-net goal.

Kyle Brodziak(notes) scored twice for the Wild, who were slow and sloppy throughout and showed little fight against a weakened opponent.

Niklas Backstrom(notes) gave up four goals on 17 shots and was pulled by new Wild coach Todd Richards for the first time.

“All you have to do is look at the standings and see there’s got to be desperation and urgency with every game we play,” said Richards, whose Wild are in last place in the Northwest Division. “We were behind 2-0 and then we decided to play.”

Vancouver’s Andrew Raycroft(notes) made 28 saves in his fifth straight game in place of Roberto Luongo(notes), who has been out with a rib injury. Raycroft made two excellent saves, using his stick to deflect a shot by Petr Sykora(notes) in the second period, then making a sliding kick save on Owen Nolan(notes) in the third to keep Vancouver in front.

The Canucks entered having lost 82 man-games to injury in their first 16 contests, with stars like Luongo, Daniel Sedin(notes) (foot) and Pavol Demitra(notes) (shoulder) missing extended time.

The Wild had won two in a row for the first time this season. They had four days off between games, and took the first period of this one off, as well.

Minnesota managed just three shots in the period and only had one on three power plays. Center James Sheppard’s(notes) blind backhand pass in his own zone was easily picked off by Hordichuk less than 4 minutes in, and he slipped a wrist shot past a surprised Backstrom for a 1-0 lead.

The frustration boiled over at the end of the period, when Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard(notes) was called for cross checking and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Raymond buried a cross-ice feed from Alexander Edler(notes) 2:20 into the second period for a 2-0 Canucks lead.

“I don’t know what it is,” defenseman Greg Zanon(notes) said in a sullen Wild dressing room. “Obviously there are no answers. You’d like to think everybody was ready, but I don’t have any answers for that one.”

The Wild finally started flying about midway through the period, putting more pressure on Raycroft. But every time they found the net, the Canucks responded to stem the momentum.

“We’re having fun and we believe in each other and every night it’s a new guy stepping up,” Raycroft said.

Backstrom, the All-Star who is the rock-solid backbone of this shaky team, was just as much to blame. He took poor angles throughout the first two periods and somehow let Pettinger score from a seemingly impossible shallow angle, prompting Richards to insert Josh Harding(notes) to start the third.

“I have to make the saves to keep us in the game,” Backstrom said.

NOTES: Vancouver D Shane O’Brien(notes) served a one-game suspension for jabbing Rangers agitator Sean Avery(notes) with his stick on Tuesday while both were on the team benches. … Wild C Eric Belanger(notes) left in the second period because of an upper body injury and didn’t return. … It was Brodziak’s fourth career game with more than one goal and the first by a Wild player this season. … Edler had two assists.

I am so sick of Boogard and Sheppard.

Boogard: He makes our team worse. Way to take a double minor at the end of the first you goon. I hate him. He skates like he has cement in his breezers. So he can beat up people. WOW!

Sheppard: I think he's leading the league in assists. Oh wait, they don't count it as an assist if you pass to the other team. This guy is so bad. When he has a scoring chance he puts the puck ten feet over the net. He gets knocked off the puck every time he touches it.

I think the Wild will win the President's trophy this year if Boogard and Sheppard don't play.

The Twins? WTF do they have to do with hockey? and if you are going to bring up ONE championship for your city in that long time span, it is probably best to say nothing.....18 years? Really? Baseball? yet nothing in hockey, basketball or football............18 years? Yikes

    @ Get Educated : "Minnesota's teams"

Again, this is hockey blog. As such, it is rather elementary to assume he meant Minnesota's HOCKEY teams. There are two ; the North Stars and the Wild. They have a total history of 35 years and zero Stanley Cups.

You fail, you should have just moved on like I suggested.

When I said Minnesota teams I meant the North Stars and the Wild obviously, we were talking about hockey, genius.

"You technically *pushes up glasses* said Minnesota teams so I gave you one even though it was totally unrelated, tee hee hee."

I'm assuming you mean why wasn't he a star? Because the host team's (the Wild) station picks the stars. I can see if they wanted to put Brodziak up there with 2 goals, but Ehrhoff is on there and Raycroft isn't. Seems pretty weird. I don't think they put much thought into these though.

    Okay, I'll respond with an equally ridiculous and irrelevant comment ;
The BC Lions won the Grey Cup in 1994, 2000 and 2006. 3 years buddy.

Hmm...this is a hockey blog, right? Okay, the Vancouver Giants won the Memorial Cup in 2006.

"Get Educated", move on man, you're just kinda embarrasing yourself now...

Yeah, minny fans. Ya gotta wonder what this Canuck team will do when they get their players back. They beat you pretty bad tonight, with half a tank! And looking at those standings, well they aren't looking to bad for Vancouver (even compared to the much exalted Hawks, who HAVE NOT WON ANYTHING to deserve all the hype the media has been throwing at them. maybe they ought to stick to beating up cab drivers! It is a moot point, given Vancouver's games in hand, but for all Chicago's supposed white hot talent, VANCOUVER HAS MORE POINTS AND BEAT THEM LAST TIME THEY PLAYED!

The only whiff of success that the Wild have ever had was based on obstruction hockey and solid goaltending. Now that they're trying to play real hockey, we're seeing what they really are.

The Canucks just walked into their building and punked them. 3 shots in the first? In their own building? Against a team so shorthanded that it's been dressing defensemen as wingers? No excuse for that. None.

Whining about trash goals haha, a steal and top corner shot, real trashy. 5-2, you played much worse. The 5th was trash, ya, maybe your team should work a bit harder and score some of those yourselves, along with 4 perfectly credible goals.

"I'm talking all time. 2003 playoffs is also a good indicator. LMAO. Have some."

Yeah, Minny did have their number that year, obviously. You can't, again, keep clinging to a playoff run that happened 7 years ago now - almost none of the same players involved back then are on either team. Meanwhile Canucks have at least been a good team most years since then and been in the mix, meanwhile Minny has been terrible, and Canucks have had their number.

If you want to teach a history class, then you have a nice story to tell. But I'm more concerned about what's happening in the current year.

You can always tell the fans of currently bad teams, because they bring up stuff that happened forever ago. And like I said, I don't even like it - Minny has great fans they deserve better. Carolina and Tampa winning cups is a tragedy.

WHY DO YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT INJURY "EXCUSE"?

I'm not "excusing" anything, look up that word. They're winning. All i said is that they will be better when Luongo and Sedin etc. join them. Which is 100% true.

You're making an excellent fan base look really ignorant.

Well the Wild were definitely the better team in the third period, hard to overcome a trash 1st goal, a shorty, and a PP goal all in one game. Wild need to start lighting the damn lamp.
