DENVER (AP)—Feeling much better after a recent bout with swine flu, Peter Budaj(notes) made his long-awaited season debut.
Not that many were on hand to see it.
Playing in front of the smallest home crowd in Colorado Avalanche history, the backup goalie stopped 28 shots in a 4-1 victory over Phoenix on Wednesday night.
Milan Hejduk(notes) added two goals and Paul Stastny(notes) had three assists to help the Avalanche remain on top in the Western Conference standings and tie Pittsburgh for the overall NHL lead.
Despite their winning ways, the Avalanche only attracted 11,012 spectators Wednesday—all the empty seats quite noticeable.
A disappointment for a team that’s been playing so well?
“Our job is to go out and play hockey, our job is to provide entertainment for our fans and to make sure the games are exciting,” Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. “I think we’ve done a good job of that this year.”
Budaj was brilliant in goal, allowing only Ed Jovanovski’s(notes) power-play goal midway through the third period.
That despite not playing in a game since the exhibition season.
The 27-year-old Budaj was scheduled to make his first start Oct. 23 against Carolina, but was scratched due to flu-like symptoms. It turned out to be swine flu, causing Budaj to miss four games.
He was growing quite anxious to get out there.
Even with the layoff, there wasn’t a hint of rust.
“I felt great and the communication was great,” Budaj said. “After a couple of saves you relax, you know you’ve been there … Get back to basics and not do anything crazy.”
With Budaj fully healthy, Craig Anderson(notes) finally got a night off. Anderson made a franchise-record 15 straight starts to begin the season, breaking the mark that belonged to Mario Gosselin, who made nine straight starts to open the 1987-88 season.
Marek Svatos(notes) had a goal and David Jones(notes) added an empty-netter as Colorado improved to 5-0 at the Pepsi Center, one win away from tying its best home start since moving to the Mile High City.
“At times, we were a little slow but Budaj played unbelievable and kept us in,” Stastny said. “He’s the main reason we were up one goal going into the third.”
The Coyotes certainly had their chances, but couldn’t sneak anything past Budaj.
“It was a pretty lackluster effort on our part for the better part of two periods,” Jovanovski said.
Midway through the third period, the Coyotes picked it up, pulling within a goal. But they couldn’t get the equalizer, despite a couple of quality shots by Matthew Lombardi(notes).
“We’ve got to bury those chances,” Lombardi said. “Couldn’t make it happen.”
Down a goal with just over a minute remaining, the Coyotes pulled goalie Ilya Bryzgalov(notes), leading to Jones’ breakaway.
Just 19 seconds later, Hejduk scored his second of the night.
Bryzgalov made 25 saves as the Coyotes dropped their second straight game. Bryzgalov has one of the top goals-against averages in the NHL, allowing less than two goals a game.
The Avalanche scored a power-play goal just 57 seconds into the game when Hejduk tipped in Kyle Quincey’s(notes) slap shot from the blue line.
That set a solid tone, especially with Budaj playing at the top of his game.
As for any talk of a goalie controversy, Sacco quickly quelled it.
“I go on a game-by-game basis and right now Craig’s done a good job for us,” Sacco said.
NOTES: Avalanche F Darcy Tucker(notes) has started skating again and is listed as day-to-day. He has been out since he sustained a concussion on a check from Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu(notes) on Oct. 23. “His head feels fine after a couple of days of workouts,” Sacco said. “I’m happy that his progress is probably farther ahead than I had anticipated. … It will be nice to get him back.” … Jovanovski’s power-play goal ended a string in which the Avalanche killed 25 straight penalties. … The Coyotes are 5-3 on the road this season. Last year they didn’t win their fifth road game until Dec. 10. … Avs F Cody McLeod(notes) returned to the ice Wednesday after missing six games following an inadvertent stick to his left eye.

Wow, you actually did that? How about finding a t-shirt celebrating 17 points in 14 games, and having a .500 record. Now THAT is the mark of a true championship team....... losing half the time lol.
Now, besides the fact that your avatar presents you as a metrosexual, what is YOUR business here besides smacktalking the Avalanche?? Especially since you lost both our matchups this season, not to mention your record last season. If theres one definition of a "DBag", its a whiner who trash talks a team who consistently wipes their a$$es with his team....... just swallow the losses, like you swallow other things, with a big smile and no talk afterwards.

Whining about how much better we are doing than your team only makes it that much sweeter!! You can come here and smacktalk the Avs all you want, the fact remains, we have OWNED DETROIT since opening day, 2008. You can live in the past all you want, but the present sees you WINLESS against Colorado, and a ways behind in points.
Hey maybe you can go back in time so you can see your team win the cup again, the future doesnt look to promising. You should also go back and tell your dad to pull out early.

With lay-offs happening all over the place, people are moving away from their hometowns, and the only opportunity they get to see their team is when they play somewhere near where they live. So a nice little chunk of seats that fill hockey arenas now are opposing team fans taking advantage of one of their few chances to see their home team. For example, there are TONS of Detroit fans everywhere (Detroit's economy exploded, the entire friggin state had to relocate), so it's usually a packed house at ANY arena when Detroit plays them.
I now live in TN, so I have to wait until they play Carolina, Nashville or Atlanta to see my Avs play.
So the point was that Phoenix's fanbase is practically non-existant in Phoenix, let alone in other locations. It's a very small reason for the lack of people, but it's legit enough to point out.

Again, Colorado Avalanche tickets are SECOND HIGHEST IN THE LEAGUE. They're the MOST EXPENSIVE in the USA. The only team that have higher prices are friggin Toronto.
Dixomatic puts it in perspective quite well.

$100 a night for two people, with no beer? Who's more an idiot, the person who pays this money or the one who doesn't and watches the game on TV?

The Coyotes, and especially the Avs, are off to FANTASTIC starts. Still, piss-poor attendance. Meanwhile, the Leafs and Wild are off to very poor starts and sellout every game!

Peter McBlabb is without a doubt the dumbest, worst blabbermouth hockey announcer in the game. His partner Haynes has never recovered from his brain tumor. He is incapable of following the game, much less announcing it. He can only follow the game play by play when there is nothing happening. I am sorry but there is obviously some permanent damage. No other sport team in Denver has to put up with suck poor announcing. It is deplorable. Altitude, wise up and replace these two so that a new enthusiastic, knowledgable announcing pair can get the fans back.
PLEASE ! ! ! !!
What a pleasure it is, to see the young talent develop in the AVS. It is sad that we can't hear the game called appropriately.

Blame it on Phoenix? What a stupid excuse made by an idiot. The Coyotes are ranked second in the league on several power rankings, and your not gonna support your team? I dont care if they are play a little league team, its still a game and you still support your damn team. thats just sad. Your blaming Coyotes fans for your lack of support, so obviously your not a fan at all. All the Phoenix fans should blame the Colorado fans for their court issues and moving the stadium too, because there are no fans in Colorado.

They still average over 19,000 (sellout most other cities), not bad for a place you risk your life going to. Move 'em to the suburbs Mr. Ilitch

"Reasons why the Pepsi Center has been empty lately:
1. ALL summer we heard about how we're "rebuilding" blah blah blah the Avs will suck this year. Season ticket holders (which are a huge amount of the lower bowl normally) probably discontinued their tickets until the Avs pick it back up (because a lot of season ticket holders are casual fans)
2. World Series game tonight. People that aren't really hockey fans that just go to the game are gonna stay home and watch the freaking WORLD SERIES.
3. I live in Boulder and didn't get back from the game till past 11. A good reason to not go on a weeknight.
4. People who can only go to a couple games a year are NOT going to chose the Phoenix game as one of the games they go to. Think about it; if you had to chose 5 games you wanted to go to (or even 20!) you would NOT chose the Phoenix game.
5. All of Denver's bandwagon fans have yet to be convinced
6. The Nuggets ALSO played tonight and they've been huge in Denver recently.
7. Phoenix has like NO fans, especially from out of phoenix. Most games there are a lot of away fans that also buy tickets to see their team
8. last but not least...high ticket prices duh!
I'm sorry, bandwagon fans or not, when you hold the longest sell out record in the NHL you have a good market for hockey. There are PLENTY of excuses for poor attendance tonight. PLENTY." -Sam333

Funny how people criticize avalanche fans for not filling the seats at pepsi center, under really bad economic conditions, combined with the second highest ticket prices in the league, on a weekday game against the Coyotes.
And for as much as Detroit fans want to say they're the 'best hockey fans in the US', i still don't blame them for not selling out (even after winning the cup...), because Detroits economic situation is beyond bad, and I don't blame people for buying a month's worth of groceries over going to a game.
But that consideration should be kept for Avs fans, as well. We were a terrible team last year, and our tickets are still premium priced as if we've been on consistent cup runs for the past decade.
So case in point- both teams aren't selling out the arenas. Just like every other USA team right now.
