Bergfors scores 2 PP goals, Devils beat Caps 3-2

  • Print

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—The New Jersey Devils got their first break at home this season when the Washington Capitals scratched injured Alex Ovechkin(notes) from the lineup.

The next batch of good fortune came when Niclas Bergfors busted out with a pair of third-period power-play goals.

Bergfors connected for goals 3:13 apart to break open a tie game and send the Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Capitals on Wednesday night. It was only the second time this season New Jersey has won at home (2-4).

The Devils are 7-0 on the road.

“It’s different,” coach Jacques Lemaire said. “It’s good news and that is news.”

Just seconds after Alexander Semin’s(notes) hooking penalty gave the Devils their third advantage, Bergfors took a pass from Zach Parise(notes) in the right circle and whistled a rising shot over Semyon Varlamov’s(notes) glove with 8:40 left to make it 2-1.

Bergfors then deflected in Travis Zajac’s(notes) long shot with 4:50 remaining to give the Devils a two-goal edge. Bergfors’ game picked up Wednesday after Lemaire moved him to a line with veterans Zajac and Parise.

Bergfors’ second goal was originally credited to Parise, but Bergfors knew it was his.

“As soon as I touched it,” said Bergfors, who has five goals in 22 NHL games. “It was just a little tip. I’m glad we got the puck in the net. That was the best feeling.”

The Devils ended Washington’s streak of nine straight games with a point (6-0-3) that started with a shootout loss at New Jersey on Oct. 12. The Capitals also had earned points in eight consecutive games against the Devils (4-0-4), but they have dropped three in a row overall—following overtime losses to the New York Islanders and Columbus.

“Not only did some of them not stand out, but they cost us the game,” angry Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said. “It’s a tough one to swallow.”

Ovechkin, the NHL MVP the past two seasons, sustained an upper-body strain on Sunday against Columbus and is considered week to week. Boudreau said Ovechkin told him he felt much better Wednesday.

The Devils were more than happy not to have to worry about him.

“The excitement level that he brings, the energy that he brings to the table—that wasn’t there,” Devils goalie Martin Brodeur(notes) said. “When Ovechkin is touching the puck, it doesn’t matter what building he plays in, everybody is looking for him to do something spectacular. It’s tough to play.

“He is such a good player, so not having him, we’ll take it. We dodged one bullet.”

Ovechkin missed the fifth game of his five-season NHL career, his third absence caused by injury. Washington is 1-4 without him.

The last three penalties against Washington were taken in the offensive zone.

“Guys didn’t come to play,” Boudreau said. “Whether they are feeling sorry for themselves because Alex is not in, I don’t know. Same thing happened last year when we went into Buffalo and got smoked 5-0 when he wasn’t there.

“This isn’t a one man team, but those guys have got to understand that. People can get hurt at any moment.”

Brian Rolston(notes) also scored, and Brodeur made 26 saves for New Jersey.

Tyler Sloan(notes) scored in the first period, and Tomas Fleischmann(notes) brought the Capitals to 3-2 with 1:37 remaining. Varlamov stopped 30 shots.

“We need to take leadership and take ownership of the dumb things we’re doing,” Washington forward Mike Knuble(notes) said. “We have to stop it.”

Washington opened the scoring in the first when defenseman Sloan scored his first of the season and second in his NHL career.

Chris Clark(notes) kept the puck in the zone, and Mathieu Perreault(notes)—in his NHL debut—moved into the slot. He sent a pass left to Sloan, who also sees time at forward. Sloan showed precision when he squeezed a shot between Brodeur and the left post with 2:50 left in the period.

New Jersey got even 3:33 into the second with a little help from the Caps.

Jamie Langenbrunner(notes) worked the puck free in the left corner, and eventually Rob Niedermayer(notes) gained control. He handed the puck off behind the net to Rolston, who came out the right side. His pass attempt clipped Washington defenseman Mike Green(notes) and caromed past Varlamov into the net.

NOTES: Niedermayer left with an undisclosed injury. He will be evaluated Thursday. … Capitals C Brooks Laich(notes) played his 200th consecutive NHL game. … Perreault was recalled from Hershey (AHL) on Tuesday. He earned an assist on Fleischmann’s goal. … Devils C Patrik Elias(notes), out all season following groin surgery, might make his season debut Friday against the Islanders. … Rolston has 99 goals during his two stints with New Jersey.

la la land....YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE LOST UP THERE. Is there any "edjacated peoples" where you lives at? Anyway,I don't know how to use a calendar. I have a Pens calendar, but i use it for toilet paper. I never attended elementary school. I went directly to college. I'm thinking you were about 19-years old when you got out of the eighth grade. Or have you 'gradiated" yet? Wait...I have to change my calendar. Is it 2010 already? According to your logic,it must be. How do you flip the pages?
Enough about me. Heard any good Frank Sinatra songs lately? GO CAPS!!!!

I would venture to say that the Caps will falter virtually every game that AO misses. They have minimal weapons at best.

At this point, the Pens are the best in the East. One game doesn't mean diddly. The best overall record belongs to the City of Champions--Go Pens!!!!

    Brett W,

so because the Devils beat the Pengins once it means the Devils are better? Well lets look at who beat NJ this year:

    Philadelphia
    Rangers
    Atlanta
    Buffalo

They must all be better than NJ.

Teams will lose. Upsets will happen. NJ beating Pittsburgh was an upset. But over a long schedule these things happen where crap teams win against great teams. NJ is a middling team in the Atlantic division, Pittsburgh is overall #1 in the league.

    Brian S,

the toothless hillbilly is you. The Stanley Cup was won this year. It says to me you either have no clue about the English language or you can't use the calendar. In any case, you must be lacking in some serious education because using a calendar is a skill we learn early in elementary school.
Therefore I can now, going by your logic say that those teams are better than the Devils.

last night on caps postgame, alan may chewed semin a new ass and thats what the caps are obviously lacking...they need to look past the fancy skating and deft stick handling and get themselves tougher....somebody needs to step up and it doesn't appear to me that clarkie is or if he is, it ain't workin.....one of these guys need to jerk a knot in some lazy asses....coach and staff get a pass on this one as far as i'm concerned....if clark can't motivate his team on the ice, maybe the C needs to be sewn on another sweater....the coaches might can make you skate til you puke, but they are not peers....i've had broken bones that hurt less than watching that game......c'mon caps, wake up.

The Pens have played an easier schedule than the Devils so far. When the two teams met head to head New Jersey smacked the Pens around the entire game and won 4-1. Devils are the best in the east sorry Pens fans.

For # 42 . There is alot of crying in here . Pitt fans dont have anything to cry about . Except for maybe those few years that we had some losing seasons . We already did what your team have NEVER done before . Yes , the Caps have one of the best players on the team and Backstrom is very good too . You guys can have the MVP trophy or what ever else your bragging about . I watch the Caps play all the time and they are still missing the pieces that they have been missing for years . There style of play will never make it through the playoffs . For starters the Caps are in one of the weakest divisions in hockey . Pitts divisions , once again will have over half the playoff teams . The Caps might be the only team that make the playoffs from their division this year .

@42 Ink a Dink, actually my post 19 is dissing VarLOLmov (who does suck, face it), and the SE Conference with the lack of a decent Canes squad is unbelievably bad out of the gates. Otherwise what did I say? Hard to imagine the Caps finishing worse than 3rd in the East, simple deduction. It will be interesting to see how the Caps fare sans Ovechkin, so far not so well. Neutralize him, or at least slow him down and the other holes in the Caps will become apparent. Been this way the entire life of the organization, no reason to believe this season will be any different.

#41 "The Devils are the hardest working best managed and coached as evedinced by Lou's Hall of Fame Induction.. "

well said. you had our number last night (and mostly the first game too *sigh*). semin needs to be traded. he has twice as many lost games for us than he has won games. playing next to ovie will give you chances, which he has gotten. but when its on him alone to do something (i.e.-the PENALTY SHOT-TYPE BREAK AWAY), he always chokes.

semin for 2 draft picks and an undisclosed amount of money to the flames!

Wouldn't be surprised at all to learn you are one of those dorky Pens fans, Caps all the way this year! Even Bettman can't stop them! GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, the 2nd best team beat the best team? doesn't that make them #1 until they meet again? Or at least when we're talking about the 2 teams head to head. And no i am not a Devils fan even.

By the way, Never forget Zajac's goal against tampa that tied it with .8 seconds left. Devils look good this year.

The Pens are best team in east bottom line. Devils could be 2nd even though they beat the pens they beat them wo 4 of their star players, when pens get healthy again they will be even better, until the caps quit shooting themselves in the foot by taking dumb penalties and beat the pens in playoffs it will be another quick exit for them in playoffs unfortunately, but i hop they can get it fixed real soon

I have been a Devils fan for a long time and I have never been so impressed by a Devils team. Although they are solid just about every year, (thanks Lou!) this year they are really playing together. Its all about positioning and the team this year, it seems, is never caught out of position. Hopefully Bergfors has finally found a groove and Elias should be back Friday (hopefully.)
And yes, we despise the Penguins and Rangers, at least I do, and have no problems with Washington. I like the Caps and have a lot of respect for Alex O. So yes Caps fans, good game. We will meet again. GO DEVILS!!!!!!

The Devils did well considering they've been playing short-handed for most of the season already. Elias hasn't been in the lineup all season and losing Pandolfo and Martin, and then Oduya to injury is a testament to why NJ has been as consistent as they have been for 15+ years - they play disciplined and as a team. Others step up where/when needed and contribute in any way they can. While Martin and Oduya are not exactly household names, they are our top 2 Dmen so it says a lot about others stepping it up a notch. What's scary is NJ is only going to get better as they get healthier.

The Caps played well. They just shot themselves in the nuts with penalties. See what NJ did Semin, they had one penalty and you had 3 because you can't control your stick. Semin is a good player, he just needs to be careful with what he does with his stick when he doesn't have the puck.
