Doughty leads Kings to 5-3 win over Coyotes

  • Print

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—The Phoenix Coyotes gave the Kings’ Drew Doughty(notes) an open look at the goal. He buried the chance.

Doughty scored the go-ahead goal with 4:51 remaining and Los Angeles rallied to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-3 Monday night.

“No one on their team tried to block my shot so I had a whole lane to the net,” Doughty said. “I just put it where the goalie wasn’t and luckily it didn’t get blocked or hit a stick.”

Ryan Smyth(notes) scored twice, Anze Kopitar(notes) had a goal and two assists, and Justin Williams(notes) also scored for the Kings, who won for the first time in five games this season when trailing after two periods. Los Angeles snapped a two-game losing skid.

“I thought we had a little lull there in the second,” Smyth said. “We took the lead but we built some character in this locker room tonight going into the third and I think that was a big step.”

Smyth said the Kings were inspired by coach Terry Murray’s harsh talk during the second intermission.

“Play better,” Murray said when asked the theme of his talk. “The second period we had a lot of trouble getting through the neutral zone. We needed better puck management. Sometimes players have to be reminded of it.”

Shane Doan(notes) , Martin Hanzal(notes) and Scottie Upshall(notes) scored for the Coyotes, who had their three-game winning streak snapped but received better news off the ice.

Earlier Monday, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Redfield T. Baum approved the Coyotes’ sale to the NHL with the league intending to find a buyer committed to keeping the franchise in Glendale. The conclusion of the team’s bankruptcy proceedings didn’t help the Coyotes avoid a franchise-record low announced crowd of 5,855.

Upshall gave Phoenix a 3-1 lead at 14:44 of the second period, taking a backhand pass from Robert Lang(notes) and sliding the puck between Jonathan Quick’s pads.

But then the Kings stormed back for their first win in three games against the Coyotes.

“We got into the third period up 3-1 and hopefully we could push that gain along but that wasn’t the case,” Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. “They came at us hard and we didn’t do a very good job of defending and didn’t do a good job of executing to get any opportunities from out end.”

Smyth pulled the Kings to 3-2, taking a shot from the right side that trickled under Jason LaBarbera(notes) and along the goal line and then skating around the back of the and tapping the puck into the open left side.

“I made a bad play at the end of the period and it kind of changed momentum there,” LaBarbera said. “I think that was the turning point in this game.”

Williams, playing his first game after missing the past five with a lower-body injury, tied the game 3-all with 13:16 remaining on a backhand shot just inside the left post.

Doughty capped the comeback on a shot from the high slot off a pass from Wayne Simmonds(notes). Smyth added an empty-netter with 39 seconds to go.

Kopitar gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 15:59 of the first period, taking advantage of a partial screen by Smyth to beat LaBarbera from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

Doan tied the game with 1.7 seconds left in the period, tipping Ed Jovanovski(notes) ‘s shot over Quick’s right shoulder for a power-play goal.

Phoenix extended its lead to 2-1 just 37 seconds into the second when Doan looped a pass off the outstretched glove of defenseman Jack Johnson(notes) and onto the stick of Hanzal, who scored on a quick wrist shot from the left circle.

“We were not good enough, not even close,” Doan said. “We have to be better at home. At home we don’t think we’ve played our best hockey and that’s frustrating and disappointing.”

NOTES: Los Angeles had not won after trailing after two periods since a 3-2 win at Boston on March 19. The Coyotes set franchise record-low attendance marks in each of their past two games. There were 6,495 at Jobing.Com Arena for Phoenix’s 3-2 shootout win over Anaheim on Saturday. Phoenix RW Peter Mueller(notes) was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. Upshall’s goal was the 50th of his career.

Well, at least the U.S Bankruptcy approved the sale of Coyotes to NHL. with the league intended to find buyers. We'll see what will develop in the next few month. 5, 855 in attendend is the smallest crowd. 6,465 attended the game when the Ducks came to Jobing.com. Not good. They must move find a buyer soon. And another thing. It's fans like you that I blame for the Kings sucking for so long. Keep supporting a loser and there is no reason for the team to spend any money to try to get better. Why should they?

You guys will keep proclaiming "hey they are getting better!! Hey they try really hard!! " Well a loser is a loser. For a long, long, very long time, the Kings have been losers. Face the facts. Look at the records. It's not my fault. Don't get mad at me. All i know is any "true" hockey town franchise, (detroit, boston,Philly) if they had a record like the Kings record, the owners and management would be run out fo town on a rail while on fire. But not here Kings fans just grin and smile and say " I love the Kings and i hope really hard they are going to get better. But if they don't I will just smile and keep hoping againest hope.

Face the facts. Until they actually win they are losers. I'm a fan and I support the team but that DOESNT MEAN I HAVE TO ACCEPT LOSING. Win more then a month then we can talk.

Actually your wrong in 1990 (18 years ago) they scored 19 points in october. Finished 1st in the division. (the only time) and in 1999 they scored 18 points in October same as this year and got swept from the playoffs. And yes you will see them in April. 2-5 games out of the playoffs and trying hard to make it. but they will come up short like i have painfully watched them to so so many times.

Everyone is saying the kings start great and end horribly which is somewhat true but I think that tying the franchise record for points in October says something about the potential of this team... you'll be seeing them in mid April...

I've been a Kings fan since the beginning. Yes, many lean years but those Marcel, Charlie Simmer, Dave Taylor years and the Gretzky years were most memorable. But during those years, they didn't win it all either. Maybe, after 40 years, we can build something and at least enjoy good hard hitting hockey. Will they win it all this year? No! Will they contend with the upper echelon teams in the league, probably not. But if they continue to score like they are doing in the first 16 games, so be it. That and good defense will make every game a "good hockey game". Let's enjoy the sport and take away the "win or they are lousy" thoughts and watch good hockey being played at the Staple Center. Stay behind your team or be a "Fair-weathered Fan" and only come around when they are winning! It's been 10 years since the Chicago Bulls have won and boy, did the world-wide "Bulls fan-club" sure disappeared in the 2000's! Only their team when they are winning...LOL. That my friends, is not a "fan" of any team.

This is the 2nd time the Kings have beaten Phoenix in 3 tries! WOW 5,855 fans??? 6500 for a Saturday game vs. the Ducks?? I've been supportive of the Coyotes staying in Phoenix but this is ridiculous and embarrassing, obviously there aren't enough people THAT concerned to show up (for a Saturday game no less) to justify keeping them in the Desert. The Yotes are a pretty good team, 9-5-0, they certainly deserve better than a 1/3 full arena.

Tim, do us Kings fans and yourself a favor and hang yourself. Really. You might as well since you seem incapable of taking any joy in anything Kings related. Why subject yourself to perpetually being the buzzing fly that annoys everyone who are just trying to eat and enjoy themselves? End it and end it all quickly. I'll pay for your rope.

Kings fan all my life. I'm 45. LOTS AND LOTS of anger and hate towards the Kings ownership and management. They don't care about hockey or the team or the fans. In a league where damn near every team makes the playoffs, the kings haven't in the last 5 years. 5 YEARS! Hell they have only won 10 playoff games in the last 15 years!

They start good often and fade fast. Don't hate the players hate the suits that ruin the team.

Face the facts... life will get easier.

Thats some funny stuff Puck off. I've been a fan since the early 70's myself and for you to say this year "feels special" or for that matter anything positive about the Kings is laughable. They are 7-8 players away from being any good at all.

So they have a nice start. Big deal. They start off good every year. They won't make the playoffs. They don't want to make the playoffs. AEG is a joke. They know nothing about hockey nor do they want to know anything about hockey. Any good players will be traded away in a year or 2.

Face facts and life will be easier for you. THE KINGS ARE A HORRIBLE FRANCHISE!!!! HORRIBLE!!!
THEY ARE LOSERS AND ALWAYS WILL BE UNTIL THEY ARE SOLD.

@ 31...Their building is not in the middle of nowhere. It's only about 10 miles from downtown Phoenix in a city (Glendale) of about 250,000. That's like saying Universal Studios is in the middle of nowhere.

How is it that Labs has a NHL contract?? How is it that the NHL owns this team and is hell bent on keeping it where nobody cares about hockey? And if you say they do care in Phoenix, you must be part of the 6000 that was there last night. The end of the Yotes in Phoenix came when they decided to put that arena out in the middle of nowhere... Go Kings...

Actual attendance was 3120 and it will stay that way until a new owner is named.. The Suns had 15000 opening night . That left 3000 empty seats . This town is hurting money wise, just like the whole country. Let's all pull together and maby things will get better. One other thing the Coyotes only played in the 2nd period. So they lost a game they really needed. That must change ,and the players know it.

AP is awful..."But then the Kings stormed back for their first win in three games against the Coyotes." First win? Ummm, sorry, but on Oct. 24 the Kings scored 5 and the Coyotes scored 3, same score as last night. Don't just take it from me; the league officially gives the victory to the team that scores the most goals, every single time, even for L.A. where the press is usually asleep by the end of the game.

@ 26, I totally agree! This, among other things, is proof that Arizona in NOT a viable hockey market. Less than 6000 fans is probably not enough revenue to pay the electricity bill.

Seattle couldn't keep the Sonics due to the lack of funding for a new arena. The local government had just paid for a new ballpark for the Mariners so needless to say they didn't feel like dishing out anymore money. However, if Seattle can build a new building I think it would be a perfect home for an NHL franchise. Either way, if Phoenix will be moving it won't be to Seattle. The only place I can see this franchise moving to now is either Kansas City or Winnipeg, if they move at all that is.

Less than 6000 fans. Ouch! Bye bye Phoenix. Time to come home where you belong: Winnipeg. Or Hamilton. Or Fredericton. Or Moncton. Or St John. Or St. John's. Or Quebec City. Or Moose Jaw. Or Medicine Hat. Or Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Alberta. Or Mississauga. Or Markham. Anywhere in Canada. K.C. won't cut it either. They failed before. They will fail again. Cleveland too. Failed before. Will fail again. This league has major problems. Miami in trouble, Phoenix dead, Raleigh will be in trouble very soon unless they start winning and that won't happen this year - I fear the worst for the NHL right now. Contract and bring teams back to Canada Gary B. Hartford could support a team again perhaps. Maybe maybe maybe Seattle but I doubt it. They couldn't even keep the Supersonics. Time to contract I imagine.
Good for LA! Well done. Hope they keep it up.
