Nabokov leads Sharks past Hurricanes, 5-1

  • Print

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—San Jose has had little trouble racking up wins so far this season, though it’s only in the last week or so the Sharks feel they’ve actually started playing well.

Kent Huskins(notes) and Brad Staubitz(notes) scored 1:22 apart in the second period, and Evgeni Nabokov(notes) made 25 saves as surging San Jose continued its strong recent play, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Sunday for its fifth consecutive win.

“We’re playing better and better each night and doing the things we need to do to win,” said Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray(notes), who also scored. “We played very sloppy in the beginning of the year. We got wins because (Nabokov) stood on his head. We obviously have a lot of talent on this team and we were explosive and scored four or five goals here or there. I didn’t think we played very good hockey at all.

“We’ve started to play better. We can certainly play better, but we’re playing better now.”

Marc-Edouard Vlasic(notes) and Patrick Marleau(notes) also added goals for the Sharks, who sit atop the Pacific Division. San Jose got three goals from defensemen in its first win in Carolina since Oct. 24, 2000.

“I think that’s a part of our team,” Huskins said. “All of our defensemen can kind of get up in the rush and make it an odd-man rush. If we can chip in goals, that’s great.”

Brandon Sutter(notes) scored his second goal in as many games for the Hurricanes, who haven’t won in nine games and are off to their worst start (2-8-3) in franchise history.

“It’s not any one consistent thing through the bunch of games—it’s a different fire each day,” Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. “I probably can’t explain how frustrating that is.”

Sutter started the scoring early in the second period when he broke in on the left wing and wristed a shot past Nabokov’s blocker. The puck rang off the right post before ricocheting into the net. Sutter, who had one career goal coming into the weekend, also scored Carolina’s lone goal in its 6-1 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Hurricanes have been outscored 16-4 in their last three games.

“I think we’re all taken aback, and I think that’s part of it,” Maurice said. “I think that things that you’ve seen work well in the past haven’t worked well. Areas that you expected to be strong in—forechecking and controlling the puck in the offensive zone—(haven’t worked). That surprises the hell out of you.”

San Jose took over after Sutter’s goal, scoring two goals in rapid succession.

Huskins struck first when he beat Carolina goalie Cam Ward(notes) on a sharp angle 4:05 into the second.

“I just threw it at the net and got a lucky bounce there,” Huskins said.

A little more than one minute later, Jody Shelley(notes) set up Staubitz for an off-balance wrist shot from the slot. Murray added his goal late in the second period, converting a beautiful pass from behind the net from Joe Thornton(notes). It was Murray’s second career goal and first in 109 games.

Vlasic’s goal in the third period came on an odd-man rush while Marleau finished the scoring by blasting a slap shot past Ward on the power play.

Ward made 20 saves for Carolina, returning to the net after sitting out his first game of the season Saturday.

Making matters worse for the woeful Hurricanes, Eric Staal(notes) left the game with an upper body injury and didn’t return.

“I don’t know the extent of it, but it was significant enough to take him out,” Maurice said. “He’ll play through most things but he couldn’t go.”

Notes: About the only good news for Carolina was the fact two of their regulars returned to the lineup. Erik Cole(notes) played after missing 10 games with a broken leg. Tuomo Ruutu(notes) suited up after being suspended three games for a hit on Colorado’s Darcy Tucker(notes). Carolina F Ray Whitney(notes) was honored before the game for playing in his 1,000th NHL game. F Scott Walker(notes) also played in his 800th NHL game. San Jose will play in Columbus and Detroit before returning home. At the end of the road trip, the Sharks will have played 12 of their first 17 games on the road, nine in the Eastern time zone.

Brian = just clean my god damn window and don't try to talk to me you piece of street trash. Hiller is such a leader that he led his cub scout troop on a tour of Disneyland. And Getzlaf, just because the fruitcup is bald doesn’t make him old, wise and a good leader. How about Cory Ferry? Good leaders usually attempt to attack goaltenders and turtle on the ice. Mike Brown? Does that guy ever not get knocked out like soft Duck fans? Last year we made some D-Bag emo kid take off his duck hat in our section. You're fans are soft and all about the fairweather. Does 4-1 ring a bell? Cause that was a complete beat down in Anaheim

Brian, the difference between Ducks fans and Sharks fans is that we don't have to resort to stupidity to make us feel better...

The difference between Ducks fans and Sharks fans is the Ducks fans are too stupid to understansd that you need to wait to re-post a reply so you don't end up with back to back posts that say the EXACT SAME THING.

The difference between the Ducks and the Sharks? The Ducks get all their kinks out in the regular season, (as teams are supposed to), so come postseason they have developed strong chemistry and experience NO breakdowns. Consequently they perform very well. Yet, your beloved Sharks do the exact opposite by playing great unorganized but successful hockey in the regular season followed by an annual postseason meltdown. The shark pit gets awfully lonely around round 2 of the playoffs. hAHAHAHAHAHHHH
GO DUCKS, GO GETZLAF, GO HILLER..... REAL leaders

Cam Ward was my biggest dissapointment in my hockey draft. Could've had sooooo many other goalies but I was like 'Hey Cam's improved his numbers EVERY season consistently so I expect the pattern to continue." . . . . . .NOT. Cam Ward's numbers BLOW. Staal is a no-show and WHY is brindamour still playing? He was great but hes long exhausted his ability to play in the NHL. Thanks for all your contributions but GET OFF THE ICE AND RETIRE. Also, Canes blow, that is all.

#22....in the PO, it is much tougher to score goals because defense is much more aggressive. It is to be expected that even the top line will have trouble scoring. Count how many soft goals Nabokov gave up, not only against the Ducks, but in previous series as well. In game 2 against the Ducks, Nabokov gave up 2 unbelievably soft late goals for a 3-2 Ducks win. If not for those 2 goals alone, Sharks would have won 2-1, and the series would have looked very different. Furthermore, compare the # of shots Hiller faced vs Nabokov. Hiller stopped everything with no rebounds given. Nabokov was the opposite. In the PO, the goalie needs to step up; Nabokov simply does not have it.

    @LW,

I'm sure the rest of the team doesn't have anything to do with the playoff losses right? From reading your posts, I gather that the Sharks skaters win during the season making Nabby look good, but in the playoffs Nabby losses it for the team? Anyone else see an error in this logic? How can 1 player make or break a TEAM? After all this IS a team game no?

Sharks lost to the ducks because of the our top line being shut down, which happens. But when it does the 2nd and 3rd line need to step up, which they didn't. Even tho' I love JR, he should have retired a year before, he was a liability in our own zone last year and had some defensive lapses, but who is bringing that up? Of course not, its way to easy to blame Nabby when he doesn't have support from the D. But, Nabby has been sporadic this year, but on the win streak he has been very good in net.

Can't wait until this 2009-10 Team Teal shuts all you haters up.

#17 is so right. Nabokov has been very fortunate to have a good regular season Sharks team play in front of him his whole career. Yet his stats are mediocre at best. This dichotomy is most noticeable in the last 3 seasons. In the playoffs when teams extra play hard against the Sharks, the team couldn't cover Nabokov's mediocre ability. That's why Sharks get eliminated every year.

Any great goal tender is only as good as his D men, the Sharks D with Blake, Murray & Pickles is only getting better with Huskins and Demers. Nabby has been , and will be solid come year end. All we have to do is question his manhood like he questions the teams manhood in the 2007 Playoffs. :-) Animos mis queridos Tiburones!

When Pavelski, Setoguchi and Mitchell return to the lineup the Sharks might have to go through another period of adjustment but this team is going to be scary good by the end of the year.

LW... maybe you didn't see the replay. He definitely stopped the puck from rolling in, unless there was a huge chunk of ice that nobody had noticed and the puck just hit it and rolled toward Nabby's body. But hey, you never know right?

Nabokov has played really well as of late... looking like a goalie the Sharks can rely on. I'm sure sooner or later he's going to have a game in which he'll play terribly, and immediately everybody will pounce on him. But, its going to happen to anyone, so no worries :)

Sharks have been playing really well lately. And those who wanted Marleau to be traded: idiots.

So Nabokov gets credit for this win again?! Give me a break! Canes played horribly, with no offensive pressure whatsoever. Did anyone see that rebound that Nabokov gave up that went right back to the shooter? Naturally, after he gave up the rebound, he preceded to fall on his back doing the backstroke. Rebound shot trickled behind him going into the net, but Demers hit it back out. The Sharks announcers screamed "great reach behind save by Nabokov"! What a joke. Of course, replay shows Nabokov didn't touch the puck at all.

I went to the game and sat in sec. 310. The Candy Canes looked awful. they scored first on a two on one breakaway then gave up FIVE unanswered goals. Horrible. I can't believe that they put Rod Brind-Amor on the ice during a power play. That guy shouldn't be on ice at all.
