Backstrom makes 34 saves in 2-1 win over Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Niklas Backstrom(notes) finally stole a win for the Minnesota Wild on the road, and in the most unlikely of places.

Backstrom made 34 saves and the Wild won an away game for the first time this season, beating the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Saturday night.

“Backy was great,” said Eric Belanger(notes), who had the winning goal. “You need your goalie like that to steal you a game on the road, and that’s what he did for us tonight.”

Kyle Brodziak(notes) also scored in the first period for the Wild, who avoided being the first NHL team in 17 years to start 0-9 on the road. Including their victory over the New York Rangers on Friday, the Wild won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Minnesota beat the Penguins (11-3), who own the NHL’s best record, despite being outshot 35-15. The Wild (5-9) are 3-0 against Eastern Conference opponents.

“We played a simple game, played a great road game in a tough building to play in against a good team,” Backstrom said. “We tried to keep it simple and play our game and battle for every puck. We did it for a whole 60 minutes, and the result was good.”

Backstrom, a Vezina Trophy finalist last season, limited the Penguins to Pascal Dupuis’(notes) first-period goal.

His best work might have come in the third, when Pittsburgh had been at its best. The Penguins had won three of five previous games in which they trailed after two periods—including overcoming a late 3-1 deficit in a shootout victory at Columbus on Friday.

“It’s weird how hockey works sometimes,” said Penguins captain Sidney Crosby(notes), who had a six-game point streak snapped. “We played probably one solid period last night (against Columbus) and found a way to get two points, and then tonight we played three good periods and they kind of steal one from us.”

Backstrom stopped multiple Penguins during a flurry when the teams were playing 4-on-4 with 9 minutes left. He also robbed Kris Letang(notes), who was in alone, about 2 minutes later.

The Penguins, who were 9-1 when recording at least 30 shots, pressured Backstrom until the final horn. They created scoring chances after Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) was pulled for an extra skater in the final minute.

“He made the saves—the ones he’s supposed to make and plus more,” Minnesota defenseman Greg Zanon(notes) said. “Especially there at the end. There was a lot of pressure and we were just holding on and he made big saves.”

The Penguins had more shots on goal in the first (16) than Minnesota had in the game but trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Wild had only one shot until the sequence that gave them a 1-0 lead 12:11 in. Brodziak slapped a loose puck into an open net after a shot by Brent Burns(notes) from the point was deflected into Fleury by Chuck Kobasew(notes).

Dupuis tied it with a one-timed slap shot. Craig Adams(notes) won a faceoff back to point man Martin Skoula(notes), who quickly fed Dupuis in the slot.

“Justice isn’t always served,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “We know we could have been better off tonight. It was probably as close to a perfect game of 5-on-5 as we’ve played, and for 60 minutes. We played three hard periods and had a lot of action around the net. We dictated the pace around the offensive zone and we don’t get results.”

Belanger, who also scored in a 3-2 win over the Rangers on Friday, gave the Wild the lead for good with 0.6 seconds to play in the first. Martin Havlat(notes) found him wide open in the right circle, and Belanger fired a wrist shot past Fleury, who lost for the second time this season.

“I thought our defensemen competed very hard and so did our forwards, but you definitely have to give the credit to Backstrom in this one,” said Wild coach Todd Richards, who formerly coached in the Penguins’ system. “He made some huge saves for us, and when you’re where we are at in the standings, that is what you need. You need performances like that from your star players. And Nick is definitely one of those star players. “

NOTES: Crosby got the fourth fighting major of his NHL career when he traded slashes—and then punches—with Wild D Marek Zidlicky(notes) late in the second period. … The most recent team to start 0-9 on the road was the expansion Ottawa Senators in the 1992-93 season. … Belanger has a three-game point streak. He left the game with 1:34 to play after an inadvertent high stick drew blood from his face. … Minnesota GM Chuck Fletcher and RW Petr Sykora(notes) were presented their Stanley Cup rings Saturday. Each was part of the Penguins’ organization last season.

Then Detroit didn't want the Cup bad enough. With something that important, they lost their game face and Pitt deserved to win. As far as the recent Pitt-Minn game, no, Minn was not better. Their goalie was better and Minn capitalized twice, making their (MInn) efforts infrequent and sporadic. That doesn't make the effort better than the Pens. Though the Pens outshot them 35-15, I still think that the Pens looked a little flat and could have been more aggressive like they are accustomed of being. I said a "little" flat--SOGs don't necessarily dictate the outcome, but once again, they displayed a lot of team effort. Every team will experience games like that one. But my guess is that the Pens overall will be outshining the competition once again this year. Go Pens!

People keep saying the Penguins "out played" the Wild. Last I checked the goalie is a PLAYER on the team. Penguins lost, Wild won, get over it. Crosby's "fight" was hilarious, the ref stepped in and literally took the punches for Crosby. He's not a veal-cow, let him get roughd up a bit.

By that logic Angelica, Pittsburgh stole the finals from Detroit as Detroit outshot and out scored Pittsburgh in the series. A loss is a loss. Minnestoa was better.

(Post #88)....Amen, to that Buckethead!!! Good point!! It amazes me how people 'cry' about Crosby. When he's GOOD...they 'cry'. When he's BAD...they 'gloat'. What's with all the 'Crosby paranoia' on here?? You know....for someone who 'cries' a lot (according to SOME fans who hate the Pens)....what they FAIL to remember is back in 2005...in his 'rookie' season the Pens failed to make the playoffs. In his SECOND season the Pens LOST to the Sens but few knew Crosby PLAYED the last 15 games or so plus the playoffs with a BROKEN FOOT!!! In 2007...after a broken ankle while awkwardly hitting the boards in Pittsburgh and missing about hmmmm...28-30 games that season....he was able to play for the the Stanley Cup with the Pens but lost to the Red Wings. Again...playing HURT!! And then LAST season he lost a large amount of games with another foot/ankle problem....again, made it to the Cup finals and got hurt AGAIN in Game 7. This time the Pens came away with the Cup!!! Anyway, my point is this...for someone who's supposed to be a 'crybaby' and a 'p**sy'......the kid must be doing alright?? He PLAYS HURT!!! That in itself is something special in a league which this year has sufffered it's share of serious losses to many of its 'stars'. It's part of the game. So quit whining about him. Just appreciate all of the talent in the league which many other teams have also. John Tavares is looking pretty good on the 'island'. There are OTHER players to talk about besides Sidney Crosby. Look at the kids on the Avs?? Not too shabby. How about Claude Giroux of the Flyers?? Good player!!!!

Yep, Minn stole it from the Pens (based on SOGs, 35-15). Oh well, maybe it will be a good character builder. And why do some people say Crosby cries? First of all, that's a wierd analogy. Second, he scrapped rather well last night. Didn't think he could throw fists around like that, but he did ok. Anyways, Go Pens!

@ giocatore....Wrong there, bucko. Been a Pens fan since the mid 80's when some college buddies introduced me to hockey, and have been a fan of the Pens, even through the years they sucked, ever since. Unlike some other people, I can appreciate real talent, no matter who they play for. All the crying, whining and conspiracy theories you hear from fans of other teams about Crosby and the Pens is laughable and redundant. Instead of offering up some valid points, they foam at the mouth, cry and wail like two year olds who had their toy taken from them. "Waaa, Waaa Waaa!!! Crosby didn't let that guy get ready to fight" Spoken like someone who's only fight they ever had was to slap at another person and lispily threaten to "scratch your eyes out". The object of a fight is to win and do so by any means possible. In order to win, you have to hit the guy first, harder and more frequently than you are getting hit. I thought Crosby's pulling the sweater over the guys head to tie up his arms was a nice touch. I know, I know, I'm one of those guys who "never played the game" so I "don't really understand it". Another one of my favorite claims by people who made it all the way through Pee Wee hockey and now they are some kind of expert. Just like since you can figure out how to post on the internet all by yourself you know all about me. You all probably didn't play football so I guess I can claim if you tried it, I would have been the DT kicking your arse when you tried to run off tackle.. Blah, blah, blah....Get over yourselves. The Pens, like some other teams, are immensely talented. That fact can't be denied. Crosby, no matter what you think of him, is a heck of a hockey player. I absolutely hate Ovechkin. I mean I can't stand him. But, I recognize the fact he's a machine on the ice and wouldn't mind one bit if he was wearing a Pens sweater. I'm no "fair weather fan" I've been patiently waiting 17 years for the Pirates to go above .500. Like the past 17 years, this year I'll start the season by saying "this is the year they get their sh!t together" So, why don't you run off, there, gio, jump on the Bettman/Crosby conspiracy web site and blather and cry with the rest of the poonannies.

Do you hear people complaining about how they hate Ovechkin, or even Malkin, nearly as much they do Crosby? No-the reason being is that neither of them(or anyone else in the league) is even close to being as big of a whiny little pus*y b*tch as Mario Lemieux's illegitimate child.

Backstrom had a really good game. The pens could easily have won 5-2,but he kept 'em out.Minnesota won't make it to the playoffs though-not enough offensive spark. And for the best team in the east,i say it's either the devils, pens,or caps.Sorry any flyer fans:) GO WINGS!!!!!! Good luck to the Pens.

Pittsburgh Penguins Average Home Attendance 2001-2009

    2001: 16,277
    2002: 15,649
    2003: 14,750
    2004: 11,877
    2006: 15,804
    2007: 16,424
    2008: 17,076
    2009: 16,975

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2001

Yeah, I see no attendance issues between 2002-2006. LOL! Then again, it's perfectly normal for attendance to flop from 16,277 in 2001, to 11,877 in 2004. Another victory over "long-time Penguin fan" Dusch!

You have to forgive Dusch, he only knows numbers from 2006, since that is when he got on the Penguin bandwagon. I also find it funny that Dusch bashes a Caps fan for being a fan since 2006. Hippocrit? I highly doubt you were one of those only 11,877 "filling" Mellon Arena in 2004. LOL!

Does anyone actually talk about the game of hockey (Pens fans included) or is this board just filled with profane, childish name-calling and posturing? A few years back people would get on here and talk about a particular game (and by talk I mean the offensive/defensive zone play, fore checking etc.) and although we disagreed on things (especially Pens vs. Flyers) the smack talk was usually intelligent.Hey, as a 30 year Pens fan I don't care for the Flyers, but I still can appreciate Carter and Richards as solid, skilled players. Now when I read comments it's Cindy (Crosby) this or Alexis (Ovechkin) that, laced with third grade logic and vulgarity. It seems like so many posters on here are fixated on genitalia and body excrement. Or people trashing cities that they probably never visited nor could point out on a U.S./Canadian map if their life depended on it. The name-calling rants are really getting boring.

I won't deny that crosby is a spectacular player. But his attitude and sportsmanship are that of a child.I didn't want to bring this up,but he was so happy about the Cup that Malkin bought him, that he didn't have the class to shake Lidstrom's hand.Yes,i know we would all be excited too ,but he is supposedly a PROFESSIONAL!! Lidstrom had to watch his opponent celebrate for like 10 min.If I see Crosby do something classy,I'll be happy and cheering.Oh,and thank you all for making my day exciting.I was gonna watch SAW Vl,but this was much more exciting.

@63 Phil, actually need to firm up your facts, (I appreciate you trying to educate less than intelligent knuckleheads like giocatorre) Pens actually were in the ECF in 2001 and it is worth pointing out to dumb-dumb (giacatorre) that since the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 1992 and the President's Cup in 1993, I can't imagine why they would have any attendance issues. His comments are obviously pulled from the same place as his breakfast, his a$$. @Brian S. You're a Craps fan? And you admit it!? Wow. I'm impressed. Bit of a masochist but hey good on ya pal. You have been a fan since 2006 or before? @Nwaf. Congrats the Wings pick up their FIFTH win of the season! Wow. Out of these 85 or so posts how many are by you? 20% or so? It's not that everyone doesn't think that crosby is not a good player, it's all about his attitude and sportsmanship...he has no sportsmanship or class for that matter. He acts like a little @#$% if he loses and waits untill a player turns his back to sucker punch him or hit him with a stick, etc. Any guy he fights, crosby makes sure that the guy is a non-fighter. It's too bad that Kocur wasn't still playing, he would light up crosby like a christmas tree....he would probably hit him so hard that crosby would be a veggie all his life....crosby's such a little @#$%, that he will never be a man.
