MONTREAL (AP)—Mike Cammalleri and the Montreal Canadiens are tough to beat when the game is tied after regulation.

Cammalleri and Scott Gomez(notes) scored in a shootout to lift the Canadiens to a chippy 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night after they squandered a two-goal lead in the third period.

Six of Montreal’s seven wins this season have come in overtime or shootouts — including an OT win over the Leafs in the season opener for both teams on Oct. 1 in Toronto.

“Our fans like OT and shootouts I guess,” Cammalleri said. “We didn’t want to give them those two goals.

“We’d have liked to hold them off, but the big thing was to get the win.”

The Canadiens led 4-2 midway through the third, but Alexei Ponikarovsky’s(notes) second of the game and a last-minute goal from Tomas Kaberle(notes) tied it with 54 seconds left in regulation.

Both Montreal shooters beat Vesa Toskala(notes) in the shootout. Jaroslav Halak(notes) stopped Lee Stempniak(notes) and Kaberle in Toronto’s first shootout of the season.

Kaberle added three assists, giving him 13 points in his last five games, including a five-point night against Anaheim on Oct. 26.

Wearing their brightly striped vintage jerseys from 1912-13, the Canadiens got goals from Glen Metropolit(notes), Guillaume Latendresse(notes) and Hal Gill(notes) in the second period. Roman Hamrlik(notes) scored in the third.

Stempniak also scored for Toronto (1-7-4), which ended a five-game road trip with a 1-1-3 record.

Montreal (7-7-0) ended a two-game skid.

“I could throw out all the cliches, but we still have to find a way to win,” Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said. “Which cliche do you want? We never say die, blah, blah blah? We still need to win.”

After a sloppy but uneventful first period, Ponikarovsky knocked in Kaberle’s rebound on a power play 1:12 into the second.

But Metropolit, who has eight points in eight games this season, scored 1:15 later.

Latendresse scored on Tomas Plekanec’s(notes) rebound at 12:24 and former Leafs defenseman Gill netted his first since joining Montreal in the summer.

Stempniak closed the gap to 3-2 with 4:44 left in the period on a point shot that beat Halak cleanly.

Hamrlik was at the far post to put in Gomez’s shot just after a power play ended at 9:50 of the third period. It was the 20th goal allowed by Toskala in four starts this season and 23rd in five appearances.

Ponikarovsky scored his second of the game with 3:28 left.

The Leafs called a timeout with 1 minute remaining and sent out six attackers. Kaberle’s point shot went off Jaroslav Spacek’s(notes) skate and slid inside the far post to tie it.

“He’s doing a great job,” Wilson said of Kaberle. “He’s picking up points by the bushel on the power play, which has been pretty good.”

The Leafs went 2 for 6 on the power play and are 9 for 25 with the advantage in their last five games.

Former Canadiens defenseman Mike Komisarek(notes) nailed Metropolit with an open-ice hit early in the second period, leading to another melee. The crowd booed loudly each time Komisarek hit the ice. He left Montreal to sign as a free agent in Toronto in the summer.

“That was a rivalry game,” said Cammalleri, a Toronto native. “There was no love lost.

“There were words exchanged that I can’t repeat. There was blood on the ice. There were fights in the seats from what I could see. That’s a rivalry game.”

There was a scoreboard tribute to former Canadiens great Jacques Plante, who became the first goaltender to wear a mask full-time 50 years ago on Sunday.

NOTES: Canadiens winger Matt D’Agostini(notes), checked in the head in Chicago on Friday night, saw a doctor before the game but there was no immediate word on how seriously he is injured. Greg Stewart got back into the lineup after missing 10 games. … Toronto winger Phil Kessel(notes) skated Saturday morning, and Wilson said this week he might make his Leafs debut on Tuesday against Tampa Bay. … Ponikarovsky has more career points (25) against Montreal than any other team.

Post @ #27 ,No Laff Blood you,ve got it all wrong," as usual".You see most Hab fans are realists and if their team needs help, we say so. If they are a middle of the pack team,we see it and say so.(Which the habs are.)If they only beat one of the lousiest teams in history (the Laffs) by 1 goal in a shootout,i say they played like crap. You, on the other hand (in fact you,ve only got your poor overworked hand)would certainly be "jerkin your little self off",and have visions of sugar plum fairies and Laff cup parades if they beat anyone "EVER"! GO HAROLD BALLARD,BURKE, FERGUSON JR.!

When they can actually win in regulation clown then you can run your mouth other than that use it what it's good for...to pay your rent. What a true fan you are talking so highly about your team. You fit in perfect with the rest of the degenerates in Montreal.

And i'm sorry the habs stole a Toronto native for their team (Cammalleri) that you so desperately wanted! But now don't you worry (stop that sniffling and sobbing) you have Kessel coming into your line up and then you can tell me all about how he was worth 2 firsts and a second round pick? Ha! Ha! I see the old c@nt bag Cathy is still running here yammer. Your Habs Beens looked real good blowing a 2 goal lead late in the game.Kind of like you blowing things at the truck stop ya dirty old lot lizard. I figured out why you are so hostile out here. Your common law hubby is probably a leaf fan.and when dinner is not ready on time in the old double wide trailer you probably get a beat down like that little B@tch Cammalleri did in front of the net by Beauchemin. I thought he was going to cry he looked so scared, was he ducking down to avoid getting hit or was he looking for his balls.

Cardiac Cans win their seventh game this year. 6-0 in games that go to OT. 7-7 overall. Amazing. Cannot continue and will not continue. Enjoy it while it lasts Montreal because it won't for much longer.
Atlanta will knock them back under .500 on Tuesday night even without Kovalchuk. That is where this edition of the Montreal Canadiens belong. Just not a very good team, but a very fortunate team so far this year.

Laffs @ post 4 ,You are hilarious ,the Laffs are outshot (even though they had 3 more power plays) Have to tie the game with a lucky deflection in the dying minutes, now go to a shootout (You know their dead now) and you say-not a bad game! Hell any game we lose we say , it was a bad game you moron.Oh and who to trade? Everyone except Kaberle! Move this sick relic of a team to hamilton and start over! To their GM we say, GO HAROLD BALLARD, BURKE, FERGUSON JR.!

I'm confident that even if the Leafs do finish last that Boston won't get the 1st overall pick. A Leafs draft pick winning the lottery? Not happening.

No one would be stupid enough to take Blake, Stempniak or Mayers. Kaberle on the other hand should be begging to waive his no trade clause so he can get the hell out of Toronto.

hey chad s, the leafs actually have 1 nhl caliber player for your information. His name is Tomas Kaberle and he has 12 points in his last 3 games, other than kaberle the leafs have no one.

1 win in october, congrats leafs. Also i predict the leafs get 6 wins in november.

not a bad game for the leafs, in fact theyve been playin well for the past week. Hopefully they can win some games now. They should trade stempniak, blake and mayers and bring up some marlies for experience.
