CALGARY, Alberta (AP)—This is the way Detroit coach Mike Babcock wants his team to play.
Brad Stuart(notes) and Tomas Holmstrom(notes) scored 59 seconds apart in the second period, and Alberta native Chris Osgood(notes) made 20 saves to help the Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Saturday night.
Kirk Maltby(notes) added an empty-net goal for Detroit. The Red Wings went 2-1-2 on their five-game trip and are 5-4-3 overall.
“We skated well and maybe for the first time all year we were a five-man unit and made some nice plays,” Babcock said. “I liked the goals we scored and the way we went about our business tonight. It was impressive.”
Daymond Langkow(notes) scored for Calgary, and Miikka Kiprusoff(notes) made 27 saves. The Flames dropped to 7-4-1 with their second straight loss. They went 3-2-0 on a five-game homestand.
“I thought we started out pretty good, keeping it simple, getting pucks deep,” Langkow said. “We just got away from that. You can’t do that against a team like that. We got away from what we need to do to be successful.”
Calgary coach Brent Sutter criticized the effort of captain Jarome Iginla(notes) and forward Curtis Glencross(notes), who played on the top line with center Craig Conroy(notes).
“I thought Connie had a decent game, but I thought both his wingers never played very well tonight,” Sutter said. “The puck doesn’t have legs on it, it isn’t going to come to you. You’ve got to get after it and win battles. I just didn’t think Jarome and Glennie had their better games tonight and that’s the bottom line.”
Iginla, who had five turnovers and finished with a minus-two rating, admitted he didn’t have one of his better games.
“Before tonight I was feeling pretty good,” he said. “I didn’t have a very good game.”
The Flames opened the scoring at the 14:43 mark of the second when Langkow swatted a loose puck out of the air and past Osgood, who stopped the initial wraparound attempt by Rene Bourque(notes).
“Ozzy played real well but I thought we helped him out on a lot of the rebounds too,” Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) said. “I thought we played with a lot more desperation too. As a group of five on the ice I thought we stayed together a lot better.”
The Red Wings tied it just 35 seconds later when Stuart snapped a shot past Kiprusoff that went off sprawling Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano(notes) and into the top corner.
Holmstrom then took a pass from Pavel Datsyuk(notes) in the slot and snapped a heavy shot past Kiprusoff to make it 2-1.
Cory Sarich(notes) nearly put the Flames up 1-0 early in the second period when he redirected a cross-ice pass from Dustin Boyd(notes) off the post.
NOTES: The Red Wings played without forward Valtteri Filppula(notes), who broke his right wrist during Detroit’s 6-5 loss to the Oilers on Thursday night. Also out of the lineup for the Wings were forward Johan Franzen(notes) (knee), defensemen Andreas Lilja(notes) (concussion) and Jonathan Ericsson(notes) (illness). … Calgary defenseman Staffan Kronwall(notes) suited up against his older brother, Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall(notes), for the first time in his career. … Detroit forward Todd Bertuzzi(notes) made his return to Calgary for the first time since playing last year for the Flames and heard a few boos from the crowd. “It didn’t matter where we were at,” Bertuzzi said. “We needed the win and we were very fortunate we came out and played one heck of a game tonight.”

You make a very good point about Ozzie. He is not the name that comes to mind when you think of great goaltenders but if you look at his record it is very impressive. He has truly been there and done that which is more than can be said for most goalies. He not only has been in goal for 2 cups but he also is one of 2 Red Wing goal tenders that have won playoff fights. Not a bad record for a goalie that is truly not the first name most people would come up with as a successful goalie.
The season is still young and the wings will be there in the end. They may not win the division but they will be a top 4 seed when the playoffs start. The problem is that the Wings have been a really good/great team for so long that the fans don't remember the miserable teams of the Brad Park era (the 70's). For those who don't remember just picture the Detroit Lions on ice skates.

If you think this team is going to make any noise in the playoffs with this roster you are the one in need of some sleep.

Let's hope at some point, and very soon i might add, we'll actually start one of those things known as a winning streak and get back on track. Even with the offseason losses and the injuries already, we're still deeper and far more talented than virtually any team in the league. Just about any other team in the league other than us would be like 3-8-1 or some crappy record such as that after 12 games with the problems we've had.
These guys just need to get their heads out of their a--es and get on track, get a 3-5 game winning streak going, get a couple of lines clicking while they're at it and go from there and they'll be fine. I'm extremely ticked and getting fed up with their play thus far, took, but these guys are way too good period, injury ridden and depleted or not to have this continue. All the pundit talk about these guys being headed towards non-playoff status this year is absolute horses--t.
Personally i blame it on the "europe seaon opener" syndrome.
You ever notice the last few years, the Cup finalist team that gets stuck going to Europe for the opener ends up sucking for like a month or two to start the season? Anaheim ring a bell? and the other teams that have?
The Wings are better than this. they'll be fine...lets just get ready to expect a more "human" or somewhat average season by their standards for now.....they'll be playoff-bound and fairly decent contenders, going a couple of rounds in the playoffs at worst pretty much no matter what, but maybe not a 50 win team for the first time in several years.....expect a (slightly, moderately at worst) lesser season from these guys
GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, a good win for the Wings and maybe they can get it going now. I expect that this is the style of game they need to play in order to win with this roster. Osgood looked confident, Helm was awesome and the guys really limited the turnovers. Now if the Wings could just score first and start to get the PP rolling. But overall, very sound road game. Hope Mayday is okay.
As for the Flamers, this team has very little skill and will need to play tight, Sutter hockey all year. The defence isn't all it is cracked up to be IMO and Ollie is brutal. Pretty much Iginla needs to be the man night in and out....goodluck with that.
