Sykora leads Wild to first regulation win

  • Print

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP)—Petr Sykora(notes) tried to act as if it wasn’t a big deal. Minnesota coach Todd Richards, however, saw a motivated player.

Two days after being banished to the press box as a healthy scratch, Sykora had a goal and to help Minnesota win for the first time in regulation this season, 3-2 over the New York Rangers on Friday night.

The game was originally billed as the return of Rangers star Marian Gaborik(notes) to Xcel Energy Center. That, however was scrapped when Gaborik was injured this week.

It ended up being Sykora’s redemption.

“I think Petr had something to prove,” Richards said. “I thought his battles in the corners, his battles for loose pucks, those are the things that were talked about.”

Sykora, who has scored 20 or more goals in each of the past 10 seasons, certainly got the Wild going. He scored the game’s first goal, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead for only the fourth time in 13 games this season.

When asked about being benched against Nashville on Wednesday night, Sykora said simply, “Let’s not talk about it.” But he was certainly pleased with the outcome.

“I’m happy with what happened tonight,” Sykora said. “I prepared the same way. I played a little hockey with my boy before the game, before I came to the rink. I got a couple two, three goals against him and it carried over to the game.”

That is something the Wild (4-9-0), who entered the game 29th in the NHL in goals per game, certainly needs.

“Petr’s a proven goal scorer, that’s his game,” said Minnesota’s Eric Belanger(notes), who also scored. “You don’t like to see guys with that experience sitting in the stands. It’s good, it’s good to see him come back and get a goal and an assist. Hopefully he can keep going from here.”

For a Minnesota team that entered the game having lost eight of its past 10, the victory—the first this season in which the Wild never trailed—was much needed. Minnesota, which also got a goal from Antti Miettinen(notes) and two assists from Mikko Koivu(notes), led 3-1 after two periods.

While the Minnesota players were somewhat disappointed by their lack of aggression in the third period and the fact that the Rangers (8-5-1) cut the lead to 3-2 on Marc Staal’s(notes) goal, Niklas Backstrom(notes) made six of his 18 saves over the final 20 minutes to pick up the victory.

In the end, however, the Wild players know they made progress for at least one night.

“We talked all day about trusting your teammates and believing in yourself,” said Miettinen, who broke a 20-game scoreless streak. “The biggest thing has probably been our confidence. Today we tried to build that and I think we came out good.”

For the Rangers, the loss extended a streak of poor play. After winning seven of eight games to start the season, New York is 1-4-1 in its last six games.

“We go back to work, there’s no magic potion trying to get out of this here,” Rangers coach John Tortorella said. “It’s just a matter of trying to cut down on our mistakes, especially the turnovers in the neutral zone, and go back to work and find a way.”

Dane Byers(notes), playing in only his second NHL game, scored New York’s first goal on a rebound after almost not making it to the game. Recalled from Hartford of the AHL, Byers’ plane to Minnesota arrived late, he didn’t arrive at the arena until pregame warmups were complete and finished dressing only about five minutes before the puck dropped.

NOTES: Sykora and first-year Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher will receive their Stanley Cup rings Saturday night when Minnesota plays at Pittsburgh. Fletcher spent the past three seasons as assistant general manager for the Penguins. Sykora scored 25 goals last season for Pittsburgh. … With Staal’s goal, the Rangers have 12 goals from their defensemen, best in the NHL. Calgary and Phoenix each have nine goals from the blue line. … Sean Avery(notes) was scratched by the Rangers because of a knee injury. It was the fifth game this season that the left wing has missed. … The Rangers are in the midst of playing five of six on the road. The only game at Madison Square Garden in that stretch is Sunday against Boston.

For any Wild fans thinking they'll follow the Penguin model to success, remember how many years Pittsburgh fans suffered - watching their team tank by icing an AHL squad in order to stockpile that many draft picks. All of this misery was lost in the team's financial woes during this era. Remember the Pens being ready to fold or move out of town? The results??:

    2000 #18 Brooks Orpik
    2002 #5 Ryan Whitney
    2003 #1 Marc-Andre Fleury
    2004 #2 Evgeni Malkin
    2005 #1 Sydney Crosby
    2006 #2 Jordan Staal

Stop dreaming, unless you're willing to be last or next to last FOUR YEARS IN A ROW. No one in Minnesota would have the stomach for it. Pittsburgh is an anomaly that will never be repeated. Besides, given the rise in salaries, I'll be amazed if the Pens keep even half this talent over five years like the Red Wings did.

I know Mark Stall scored for the Rangers 2 nite, but he's a liability. Touted as the 2nd coming of Brian Leetch was hyperbole. I've only watched a third of their games yet when I do watch he constantly turns the puck over in the neutral zone (yep he did it again 2nite) and gives up a transition goal.

The rest of the defense is pretty good and getting involved in the offense, as part of Coach Tort's new pressure hockey. But when you play pressure offense, you have to have smart, opportunistic defenseman. Stall is a bust.

When Gaborik and Avery return the forwards should pick it up.
Long season, we'll see where they are after the all-star break.

    Let's Go Rangers!

@ Rangers fans : What's up? Seriously, I never get to watch the NYR, why the recent fall off in play? Things seemed to be heading the wrong way even prior to the Gaborik injury. The rookies? A lack of secondary scoring? I'll assume it's not Lundquist.

Wild are rebuilding, but it's still good to see backstrom back 'in the groove'. Clutch performance in the 3rd period!

    Chris, Patience friend.

The Wild never came right out and said it, but this is a serious rebuilding year. I've said it a hundred times, the Wild were a 20 win team without Lemaire behind the bench. He never got enough credit, and enough talent. The system he ran was the only way for us to stay in games. We are now getting a glimpse of life without that system, with these players, and it isn't pretty.

I have faith in Richards and his philosophy, but the fact remains that we don't have enough offensive weapons at the moment to make his system fly. Maybe once everyone gets healthy again and the guys have some time to get into a groove, we can turn it around, but I think we're on a 2-3 year plan.

You have to look at teams like Pittsburgh to see our future franchise model. Pittsburgh was pretty bad for a number of years, allowing them to stockpile young talent through the draft like Staal, Crosby, and even Malkin, and more. We won't be a playoff team anytime soon, but I hope the knowledgeable fanbase in Minny sticks with this team and still packs the house.

It's Minnesota, and we love our hockey. Call us Rubes, but I love the game and will go to ten games a year whether we're in first or last. It's all just entertainment.

Here's hoping we pull it together sooner, rather than later.

I miss Gaborik. He only missed significant time in two seasons while here. Yes, it was annoying, but not as annoying as Richard's new "give up a few goals right away and see if we can come back" system.

It's sad how in 1 1/2 years you can go from division champs to the cellar of the Western Conference. I wonder how long it will take for Richards to get fired if we keep this up. I don't understand how we're so much worse with better players. In better players I mean:

    Added: Havlat, Sykora, Kobasew, Zanon

    Lost: Vellieux, Skoula, Bergeron

I might be missing some other players and butchering the spelling of their names. I don't count Gaborik because we were without him most of the season last year. I think we might be worse because Sheppard and Pouliot are getting more ice time.
