Smithson’s short-handed goal leads Nashville

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP)—The Minnesota Wild know they’re letting the young season slip away.

Already last in the Western Conference, Minnesota fell behind by a pair of goals early and gave up a short-handed goal late in the third period in a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.

The loss ended a streak of 13 consecutive games at Xcel Energy Center without a regulation loss and dropped the Wild to 3-9-0 this season.

Jerred Smithson’s(notes) winning goal midway through the third period came after Minnesota failed to keep the puck in the offensive zone on a power play.

“It’s one of those things where as it goes on, it gets worse and worse,” Wild winger Cal Clutterbuck(notes) said. “Your confidence dips and dips to a point where you start believing it’s going to happen. We’ve got to get to a point where that mentality can’t creep in.”

Minnesota set a team record with three goals in 1:47 early in the second period to take the lead, but Mike Santorelli’s(notes) first career goal at 6:44 of the second period tied the score. Smithson’s goal at 10:44 of the third put Nasvhille, which won in regulation for only the second time this season, ahead for good. J.P. Dumont(notes) and Shea Weber(notes) scored the Predators’ first two goals before the game was 6 minutes old.

Pekka Rinne(notes) improved to 2-3 on the season, stopping 11 shots after replacing Dan Ellis(notes) at the 2:18 mark of the second period.

Clutterbuck, Brent Burns(notes) and Owen Nolan(notes) scored for Minnesota, while Niklas Backstrom(notes) stopped 18 shots.

“It was pitiful—having a two-goal lead and losing that was unacceptable,” Smithson said. “But the boys rallied back after that. We’re not a team that’s scoring a lot of goals, so hopefully that’s something we can get snowballing.”

The only thing snowballing for the Wild is negativity. A team meeting Tuesday did little to turn things around for Minnesota, which is 0-8 on the road and quickly falling behind the Western Conference pack.

“My feeling is when we got up 3-2 … we weren’t playing the game to win, we were playing not to lose,” Wild coach Todd Richards said after what he called the toughest loss of the season. “To me that’s a huge difference in mentality. What I saw us doing from the bench—I have to watch the tape to see if I’m right or if I’m wrong—was just retreating.”

Predators coach Barry Trotz said his team was on the flip-side of that coin, playing to win despite falling behind during Minnesota’s stretch of three goals on three shots.

“Those are hard lessons sometimes, but those are lessons you take,” Trotz said. “In Chicago we gave up back-to-back goals and lost 2-0. Today we gave up three. Hopefully we’re not giving up four tomorrow. But we’ve gotta learn from that.”

Nashville entered the game as the league’s worst scoring team at 1.7 goals per game and with the league’s worst power play conversion rate—8.3 percent. But by 5:33 Nashville led 2-0 on Dumont’s goal from David Legwand(notes) and Steve Sullivan(notes) and Weber’s power play missile from Sullivan and Ryan Suter(notes). Minnesota entered the game second in the league with an 88.1 percent penalty kill.

Not to be outdone, the Wild—tied for 28th in the league at 2 goals per game—scored on their first power play, just 3 seconds after Dumont’s tripping penalty to get on the board 31 seconds into the second period. Burns’ second goal of the season started the run of three goals against Ellis before he was pulled.

Ellis was removed from the game for the second time in seven starts this season. He allowed three goals on three shots in seven minutes at Dallas on Oct. 14 in the Predators’ 6-0 loss.

Trotz said he decided to pull Ellis because things weren’t going well, but said he isn’t worried about his netminder.

Nashville (4-6-1) tied it again at 6:44 of the second period when Joel Ward’s(notes) shot from the slot went wide, but ricocheted off Santorelli’s skate and past Backstrom.

The victory ended a 1-6-1 stretch for the Predators.

“That’s what we need, guys playing with confidence,” Weber said. “Hopefully we’ll keep rolling and get some momentum.”

NOTES: Nashville returns home for two games after playing six of its last seven games on the road. The Predators are 3-3-1 away from Sommet Center. … Minnesota RW Petr Sykora(notes) was a healthy scratch, two games after returning to the lineup from a groin injury. … G Anton Khudobin(notes) joined his Wild teammates in uniform for the first time after being called up from Houston of the AHL on Tuesday. Josh Harding(notes) was scratched because of lower-body soreness. … Koivu had an assist in his third straight game and has seven points in his last seven contests.

John D - WIld will continue to sellout games, Dallas? HA. joke of a hockey state.

Swanny - 4 losses? LMAO. where do you get that. And I'm sure the Titans should have 4 wins? LMAO

Kiffin and the Vols are the laughing stock of college football.

kingsbred - Only a heavily-intoxicated homer defends Nashville hockey LMAO. At least the Wild have an excuse.

cshlby66 - Um, Sykora, Havlet, etc.

It seems like the Wild have added better players than losing them. I don't count Gaborik since he played in 10 games last year. This team is pathetic. Someone needs to look and see what Rolston and Demitra have done since they left here. Absolutely nothing. Wild fans, I think its time to cheer for losses. LOTTERY PICK!!!!!! I heard it's a good draft class next year. Fire Richards, Terhaar, Greenlay, Gorg, and I'll watch this team again.

Who knows. It's early. Maybe we'll find a way to not suck so bad. What's going to be funny is watching them play in Pittsburgh on Saturday night after playing at the Xcel on Friday.

The shutout streak ends this year. Blame Richards not the economy.

We the Wild have upgraded ? Dan G ? No Demitra--Rolston's gone--Gaborik has about as many goals as the whole Wild team ! Remember Havlat played with a good Senators team and then with Chicago's young speed skaters. With a LACK of talent on this team you hardly notice him--Face it they are offensively challenged and will be all year. Once the Vikes are done--what's left ? WATCHING THE ANNUALLY REBUILDING WOVLES OR THE PUNCHLESS WILD ? Put Burns up front --if you've been watching he's about the only 1 that can rush the puck from 1 end to the other. His numbers are down ? Why ? What's around him ? NADA !! Who's gonna score 25 goals for our Wild ? no 1

Anyone saying Nashville is weak is ignorant. They may not have star power, but they outwork so many teams. Once Ellis or Rinne get hot, they'll be right back in the thick of it. Ask Detroit. Lost 8-0 to the Preds last year ...You Northerners need to get over criticizing hockey in the south. Though it may not seem like the case on the surface, it helps the NHL in a business sense b/c no one in America is going to watch a damn Winnipeg vs. Ottawa or Hamilton vs. Vancouver Stanley Cup. Period. Try to stay warm, tonight.

    GO PREDS!

Wild are horrible. If there is a Wild fan out there that thinks this is a playoff team they best quit hitting the bong so hard. Poor drafting over the years, trading draft picks for old geezers, cap issues....it is a perfect storm for 7-10 more years of futility before turning this team around.

DanG...Vikes are doing fine (they should have 4 losses). But the Gophers blow. So your point is confusing about bad football in TN.

    BTW...Go Hawks!

Does rinne get a shutout because he came in and got the win without letting in any goals or do you have to play the whole game?

i just said "IM NOT TRYING TO PROMOTE NASHVILLE TEAMS. im not sure how the vols and titans factor into this equation. but, i guess if it helps people forget about their precious wild and how they are scraping the bottom of the west after losing to the lowly, terrible nashville team with no fans on their own ice, then fine. the titans are having an awful season and the unranked vols have played the #1 and #2 team in the nation and lost by 10 and 2 pts, respectively. what an awful way to lose a hockey game tho. allowing a career 4th liner to score a sh goal to break a tie in the 3rd period? after making that big comeback? tsk.. tsk...

Nashville has never done anything in the playoffs. Wild at least have and have sellout streaks to go with their great fanbase.

Chris - I agree, it could be in jeopardy.

Robert - you didn't mention how bad your football teams are (Vols, Titans, etc).

They are booing. This will be the year the sellout streak ends. What do we have to look forward to this winter? The Vikes are good, but you know they'll blow it in the playoffs. T-Wolves, ask me about them in 8 years. ICE FISHING!!!!

What's with Kevin Gorg's eye brows? He looks like the joker. I bet that douche gets those things waxed weekly. I think I'm going to quit watching the Wild this year and focus my attention during that time on getting Terhaar, Greenlay, and Gorg fired.

Another few things: James Sheppard is garbage. He's shown no signs of improvement. Can we please get rid of him? I also hate Pouliot too. These guys have been in the league for a few years now and are regressing. Also, what's with Burns? He was great two seasons ago. I thought he was going to become one of the best defenseman in the league. Now he's starting to remind me of Skoula. At least my cat is happy. He's a Predators fan.

This is pathetic! What's is Richards' new system? Give up 2 goals right away and see if you can come back? I can't stand this. What did the Wild do in the offseason? I think our GM is better, but Richards is a joke. I want to vomit all over him. I love hearing the fans boo. I can't imagine being there. What makes it even worse is having to look at Kevin Gorg and listen to him, Terhaar, and Greenlay. It's only eleven games into the season and I'm already cheering for them to lose in order to get a better draft pick. Does anyone know if the draft class next year is any good?
