PITTSBURGH (AP)—Sidney Crosby(notes) found a lot of ways to score in his 300th career NHL regular-season game.

Crosby had a power-play goal and a short-handed score in the third period, and had the only goal in a shootout to help the Pittsburgh Penguins win their seventh straight game, 3-2 over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

“We struggled in the first half, but we were able to rebound,” said Crosby, who has 407 career points. “We stuck with things, and that shows a lot.”

After erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period, Crosby beat Tomas Vokoun(notes) with a nifty deke in the shootout for the Stanley Cup champion Penguins, an NHL-best 9-1-0.

Steven Reinprecht scored twice in the first period for Florida. The Panthers have lost six of seven to drop to 2-5-1.

“The effort’s good, but effort doesn’t get you two points,” Florida defenseman Keith Ballard(notes) said. “We were kind of dumb in the third period. We took too many penalties and stayed in our end the whole time… In the third, they pick it up a little bit and it’s almost like we just kind of clammed up just trying to hang.”

In the shootout, Crosby moved in slowly on Vokoun and made three moves to his forehand before finally tucking it into the net as Vokoun dove to his left.

Crosby improved to 3-for-3 in shootouts this season with his 10th career game-deciding shootout goal.

Brent Johnson(notes) stopped the Panthers’ Reinprecht, Ville Koistinen(notes) and Nathan Horton(notes) during the shootout and made 27 saves during regulation and overtime in winning for the first time as a Penguin.

Pittsburgh won in the first game since All-Star defenseman Sergei Gonchar(notes) was lost for at least four weeks because of a broken bone in his wrist.

“We were still in striking distance (heading into the third),” Crosby said. “We felt like even in the second half of the second period, we created some chances. Even though we were down 2-0 going into the third, we felt like we were pretty close.”

Crosby tied it with 3:19 to play with his short-handed goal, one-timing a feed from Evgeni Malkin(notes) with a shot that appeared to deflect off a Florida player. The short-handed goal was the first in the NHL for Crosby.

Crosby’s first goal of the game came a second after a 5-on-3 power play had expired 2:14 into the third after a diving effort to keep in the puck in the zone by Malkin. Malkin swatted the puck to Alex Goligoski(notes), who fed an open Crosby in the right-wing circle.

“We had a bad start, but after that we played better and did a good job in the third period,” Malkin said. “(Johnson) played very well.”

Reinprecht scored twice in a 2:37 span.

Florida entered the game with only one power-play goal in three road games this season, but scored one on its second opportunity 12:39 into the fist period when Reinprecht flipped a wrist shot past Pittsburgh backup goalie Brent Johnson.

Reinprecht then scored for the fourth time in his past three games by tapping in a loose puck into a wide open net when Johnson couldn’t handle a shot from Nathan Horton.

“We couldn’t get a third goal,” Panthers coach Peter DeBoer said. “We had opportunities, I thought maybe four or five tonight; some 2-on-1s, some chances around the net, but we have to find a way to get more goals.”

For a while, it appeared as if Vokoun would make that hold up. He made 41 saves, including stopping Malkin while on a power play 40 seconds into he third period with a glove save but the sequence included Rostislav Olesz’s(notes) hooking penalty that led to Crosby’s power play goal.

“It’s a good way to develop that third period mentality, wear teams down and have a pretty good number of goals in the positive for the third period,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “That is something we talk about.”

This was only the third game this season Pittsburgh did not score first and also only the third time it trailed heading into the third period. The Penguins improved to 2-1 in each instance.

“Every game’s not going to be perfect,” Crosby said. “We found a way to turn the game around.”

NOTES: Penguins C Jordan Staal(notes) left the game briefly late in the second period and early in the third because of an undisclosed injury. He returned to finish the game. … D Cory Stillman(notes) assisted on both Florida goals. … Vokoun hasn’t won since the Panthers’ season opener. … D Martin Skoula(notes) made his season debut for the Penguins in place of Gonchar.

Hey Trish--I don't know where you get that I am giving you a "moronic conspiracy theory". I wasn't talking about penalties, I was talking about league standings. Were the Wings at the top a few years back? Yes. Did they get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round that year? Yes. Were the Pens 10th in the league last year? Yes. Do they have the Cup now? Yes. If you have some sort of guilty conscience about conspiracy theories, I guess that's your cross to bear. I was only stating fact. I also congratulated the Pens success, and I was being sincere. I'm just saying alot can happen during the year, and you come back calling me a moronic conspiracy theorist. Think what you will--we'll see what happens in the spring.

Never heard of the Pens having bandwagon fans. The narcisistic viewpoints of some people really humor me. The way I see things, Pittsburgh teams have always had strong fan support, through thick and thin.

The Pens would still be contenders without Crosby and Malkin. Many Pens contribute, unlike a lot of players on other teams.

Trying to be funny making fun of the Pittsburgh Penguins' organization, and it just seems that you are just bitter about them, but its ok, you not understanding the logic of thinking.

Crosby and Malkin will leave because the Pens cant afford them? they got them under contract for a long time and the 2nd and 3rd highest contracts in the league...dont think theyll be going anywhere...EVER
And unlike Ovechkin, they can see the other players and pass good...not shoot 100 shots a game, @#$% Id expect anyone who shot that much to have more goals than games played...especially someone who cherrypicks majority of the game

whoever says the pens are centered around malkin and crosby are idiots. neither in the tops in scoring right now, and yet we're still winning. the pens are getting production from everyone, whether they are the first line or the fourth line. we have one of the best third lines around in staal-cooke-kennedy. and whoever said crosby and malkin will leave bc the pens can't afford them? ray shero does a great job working out contracts to get players to stay. and both CLEARLY love playing in pittsburgh!

keep up the good work pens!

Did Maria Lemoux give Cindy a hand shake or hand job after the game ??? And my next question is who ties that mongoloid (apologies to all people with special kids) looking Malkins shoe laces after games ??? And my last question is did Bitemen get to drink from the cup like his teammates (cup meaning Cindies jock ) The state of professional hockey is in the shi@#er since Bitemen took over !!! Kinda like where Ciny takes it

Who cares what Florida's record was. That was a statement game for them coming off a disappointing loss. Not to mention every team is bringing their best to try and see where they stand against a team who has been to the Stanley Cup Finals the last two years and holds the title Stanley Cup Champions. The Penguins are playing incredible hockey because even on their off nights, they are finding ways to win. EVERYONE is contributing. In regards to the stats about where the Pens were last year before their incredible run, that has much to do with a poor coaching system under Therien. He played way too conservative considering the amount of offensive talent the Penguins have. The Pens love Bylsmas approach and everyone is on board and playing rediculous hockey!

Dutch - loved the comment and agree completely! love the part in Betmans script that said, give the Pens a penatly, then Sid, go score a short-handed goal! Priceless!

The Pens laid an egg against Phoenix earlier this year the night before winning a big game against the Flyers. Last night they eeked out a win against a team with a pretty bad record. Today they play a big game against the Devils. I hate to say it but part of me thinks they might be looking past some opponents.

It's nice to win the games against good teams, but you also need to win the ones you should and not take any games for granted. That being said, I am glad they are able to be getting as many points as they have while being banged up and coming off a short summer. Let's go Pens!

@62 bull $hit dozer, obviously you don't or can't read the stats on PPs vs. penalties mentioned earlier. But yeah you must be right, it's a Bet-Man conspiracy, let's put the Panthers on the PP late in the 3rd so that Crosby can score a shorty to tie it up in thrilling fashion. Great move Gary! Brilliant theatre!
