Rangers get goals from 5 players in win over Leafs

NEW YORK (AP)—A year ago, the New York Rangers might not have held on to the scant one-goal lead they carried into the third period.

After a strong start that produced a two-goal edge, the Rangers let the Toronto Maple Leafs hang around and get close Monday night. A stern message from coach John Tortorella and a reliance on their newly honed conditioning produced a dominating final 20 minutes and a 7-2 victory.

“We had a great start to the second period, but then it was like we stopped playing,” forward Vinny Prospal said. “After two periods Torts came in and he wasn’t really happy. We responded the right way, took the play back to them, scored the fourth goal right away. It was a lot easier after that.”

Defenseman Dan Girardi and Sean Avery(notes) both had two goals, Wade Redden(notes) added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Callahan(notes) and Marian Gaborik(notes) also scored for the Rangers (5-1), undefeated since a season-opening loss at Pittsburgh.

New York has also won seven consecutive at home, dating to last season. Henrik Lundqvist(notes) made 27 saves for his fourth victory. Brandon Dubinsky(notes), Chris Drury(notes), Artem Anisimov(notes) and Prospal all had two assists for the Rangers one night after a 3-0 home victory against Anaheim.

New York has outscored opponents 12-3 in third periods, including 4-0 against Toronto.

“The second half of the second period they carried the play a little bit and we certainly needed to regroup in here,” Drury said. “It’s nice to know we have our legs and our conditioning and are able to carry the play in the third.”

Alexei Ponikarovsky(notes) and Jason Blake(notes) tallied for the Maple Leafs (0-4-1), who along with the New York Islanders are the NHL’s only winless teams. Vesa Toskala(notes), who made 26 saves, had been 5-0-2 with a 1.37 goals-against average versus New York while with Toronto.

“It’s just not working,” forward Niklas Hagman(notes) said. “There’s only one way to go. We can only play better.

“We did some good things in preseason. We showed some good things in these games, but we just haven’t played well enough to win a game.”

After waiting until the third period to get their offense clicking Sunday, the Rangers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first against the Leafs. Callahan started it with major help from second-year Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn(notes), during a 5-on-3 power play.

While Callahan whacked at a rebound in the crease as Toskala tried to cover the puck with his glove, Schenn knocked it in with his stick at 2:34.

Redden doubled the lead at 8:08 when he took a pass from Prospal, stationed behind the net, and scored his first of the season.

The Maple Leafs cut it to 2-1 with 44.2 seconds left in the first when Ponikarovsky netted his third goal.

Lundqvist looked sharp after resting Sunday as backup Steve Valiquette shut out Anaheim.

Girardi gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead 26 seconds into the middle frame after Drury cleanly won an offensive zone faceoff back to him. Girardi’s shot hit Toronto defenseman Ian White’s(notes) stick and bounded past Toskala.

Toronto again got within a goal when Blake scored his first of the season with 2:49 left in the second during a power play. The Maple Leafs were given another advantage in the final minute, but that was negated 17 seconds later when Blake was called for cross-checking.

Then the Rangers put it away.

Avery scored his first goals in his second game following a knee injury. He beat Toskala with a backhander 1:56 into the third, and Gaborik made it 5-2 1:17 later. Gaborik added an assist to raise his totals to five goals and four assists—tallying at least one point in all five games.

“(Sunday) night it was a complete team effort. We played a good hockey team, and tonight we played against a team that hasn’t won a game yet,” Prospal said. “It was up to us not to take an easy night. You have to win games against clubs like this especially when you play them on your home ice.”

Girardi added his second goal of the game with 6:19 left, and Avery finished the scoring at 18:03.

“We kept battling until the third period but that fourth goal seemed to discourage us completely, which was the disturbing thing,” Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. “We have a number of guys who didn’t want to take a hit to make a play to get the puck out of our end, and it ended up in our net.”

NOTES: The Rangers are 32-16-8 against Original Six NHL teams since the 2005-06 season, including 9-6-2 vs. Toronto. … Toronto had won three straight against New York.

Prediction of the day Hmmm.......Cathy will eat a box of donuts and bon bons before noon tomorrow.

Back to hockey now. Wilson is a joke he benches Hagman and Stajan. I can see Hagman but Stajan, what a joke,at least he has put some pucks in the net. Meanwhile he keeps Blake in who has done nothing.Must be because he's on Team USA. Rosenhill is a joke,he should be gone and Kadri should be called up and on a line with Stralman and Bozak.Exelby is another penalty waiting to happen and should be the water boy.Pocahontas is another one they could get rid of and replace with Hansen. The youth is where it's at so use it!

@ Blue Blood : Yeah, Windsor will be very tough no doubt but we both know the Mem Cup is one of the hardest trophies to win. The Giants are looking pretty good but we have too many 16 and 17 year-olds to make too accomplish much come post-season. I think our string of 100+ point seasons may come an end. it's a bummer that the Thrashers kept Kane. I do think Tampa Bay will return James Wright after 9 games though. With Hodgson injured and Duchene in Colorado, the Battalion won't be making much noise this year. The Knights always seem to have a strong team and Kadri's back. It's going to be exciting. I would say the Spits are the frontrunners in the O. Hey, when the big club isn't playing well you always have Major Junior, right? The Giants Mem Cup win @ home three seasons ago almost made up for 40 years of disappointment for Canuck fans

I wasn't expecting a miraculous rise to the top,but this start is unacceptable. If it comes down to Wilson. Burke knows there are no friends in love and war. Good luck trying to get the memorial cup back to the WHL. Everyone will have a tough time with Windsor this year. They have a good chance at repeating. I went to the game yesterday and they dominated Sudbury 7-0.

I think you should worry about the HABSBEENS. They will be in a dogfight for the 10th position all year long. When they don't make the playoffs you can do what all of those greasy Frenchmen do. Burn cars and run your future players out of town cause that's what you do best. Funny how I never see you on Habs blogs defending your team. Just another typical bandwagon clown. Whats for dinner at the park tonight? Chicken fingers and beers!!!! By the way do you use a razor when you shave your porn stash? Just wondering...

@ Blue Blood : I respect your unwavering support of your team. I wonder, however, if it will be a simple task to fire Wilson (and I believe that would be a good idea, he cannot handle the TO media). With Burke and Wilson running team USA together, that may be rather awkward. Anyway, tough start man but I think you, unlike many other Leaf supporters, went into this season with cautious optimism as opposed to believing the hype about Burke.

"At least I got the Spits."

In light of Mickey Renaud, I was cool with Windsor's victory last year. That said, the Mem Cup returns to it's rightful home this year....THE WHL!!!

lond season folks - if any sport seems to generates teams that play in streaks, it's hockey. Oh, and I sort of recall a season or two ago the Rangers got off to a gresat start only to play so-so the reast of the year and limp into the playoffs. But hope springs eternal - lets go Broadway Blues!

Damn straight. We're here on these boards talking about the game win or lose, blowout or not. This is the worst start in the Leafs 92 YEAR history. The mark of true fans right there. People like Cathy can mock us and mock the Leafs as they wish, who cares? When the Leafs do win the Stanley Cup, we'll have the most to celebrate. This team has been bad so far, nobody doubts it. They should have won their first game and that's it. If this trend continues the only option I can see is firing the coach. Several players aren't playing to their potential and with enough heart and eventually a change will be needed. I still don't know why Wilson is dressing BOTH Rosehill and Orr. You don't need two players who can't do anything but fight, one is sufficient. It may be a long year or maybe not. This team will take a lot to turn around but shakeup could be just what the doctor ordered. It is only 5 games in, 5 awfully played games albeit.

    Oh and GO STORM!

I think it all depends on Gaborki. And I know a team is not made up with one guy but they need this guy, he draws the best D pairings and double coverage. If he gets hurt we get screwed.

Your a spits fan ,and your going to probably see a lot of Taylor Hall (the best draft pick since Ovetchkin) Then you'll see Fowler and Plymouths Seguin!(Both destined for greatness) and think we could have had at least one of them! If only Burke was a man of his word !(and not traded away his picks!) And whats your Hope! Kessel the guy who is destined to turn into the next Samsonov! It's official they stink Don. They would be better off with the lineup of youngster's they used in the pre season.Oh well unlike fans of other teams I will still back them. They have to shake up the lineup and if this continues bye bye Wilson cause they are definitely not playing for him.At least I got the Spits.

@paul, a coach is only as good as the players he can put on the ice. A good coach can make a good team a little better. a bad coach with great players will beat a good coach with crappy players. The team Toronto put on the ice was horrible, The best coach in the world would have a tough time winning with this roster. on the other hand ,Torts is getting the most out of the Rangers as of now. I hope his act does not were thin by the end of the year. These are grown men who will get tired of the yelling. we will see who can handle him and who will go by the trading deadline. so far so good. a healthy Gaborik makes any coach look good. (Not a shot at torts.. i think he is a good coach)

Now I see the rangers have more weapons on their offense. They are scoring more I see than lastyear. Everyone has been talking about the rangers offense lastyear saying they were not scoring enough but now this year rangers have a new look in which now they can finally score more. That was the only thing the rangers needed was more scoring and now they got it. They are domenating in scoring. They look like a good team this year. I know its early but lets bring the cup back to NYC LETS GO RANGERSSSSSS!!!! WE WANT THE CUP IN 2010!!!!

Great game for the Rangers tonight - Thinking about it I swear I think that the Leafs best goalie in recent years was Felix Potvin - And what the hell ever happened to him ? lol - Seriously, its good to see the Rangers offense clicking like this and its a positive thing that the Rangers have opened the season playing so well.

Are the Rangers really that good or are the Leafs just that bad? No offense to Rangers fans because your team's playing well, but I think the bigger factor is the Leafs really are that bad. They are giving up a ton of goals and can't score for shyte. Definitely playing like a team that wants to get their coach fired. They miss Mats something awful.

Its early, 76 more games to go, but so far we look good. Now we need to beat Philly , Boston, and Pitt consistantly. We have solid lines right now with Avery back. Varros sorry dude you arent cutting it.

Brash/Orr was more of a tie. Both landed shots. Brash threw some quick ones and then Orr fought back.
