TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—The Tampa Bay Lightning won for the first time in almost seven months.

Ryan Malone(notes) had three goals, including the go-ahead score midway through the third period, and the Lightning beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Saturday night.

“From Day 1 he has been ready to go,” Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said.

Malone made it 3-2 from the slot with 9:14 to play after receiving a nifty pass from Martin St. Louis(notes). After Steve Downie(notes) extended the Tampa Bay advantage to 4-2 on a power-play goal at the 13-minute mark, Malone completed his hat trick with an empty-netter with 1:16 remaining.

Paul Ranger(notes) also scored for the Lightning (1-1-2), who stopped a 12-game losing streak—including four losses in overtime or a shootout—dating to last season. It was Tampa Bay’s first win since beating Columbus 2-1 on March 24.

“The guys did a good job of keeping it even keel,” Malone said. “That’s what it’s all about. So it’s good to see everybody come together and get two points.”

Carolina got goals from Eric Staal(notes) and Rod Brind’Amour(notes). The Hurricanes were called for seven minor penalties.

“I don’t know what it is, if the referees don’t like our new coach or what, but we’ve been the least-penalized team the last couple years,” Staal said. “We’ve got to find a way and make sure we stay out of that box.”

Ranger stopped a personal 22-game goal-scoring drought from just inside the blue line at 13:24 of the second, and then Malone put the Lightning up 2-1 just 15 seconds later on an in-close back-hander.

Carolina had taken a 1-0 lead on Staal’s wraparound goal during a second-period power play at 12:42. Brind’Amour tied it at 2 with a power-play goal with 2:32 left in the second.

Brind’Amour has 1,168 career points, two away from tying Bobby Hull for 47th place.

St. Louis had two assists to extend his season-opening point streak to four games. He has five assists and seven points over the stretch.

“We could have won the last three games,” St. Louis said. “Keep playing together, I like our chances to be successful.”

Since the start of the 2005-06 season, Carolina is 39-20-4 against Tampa Bay and Florida. The Hurricanes beat the Panthers 7-2 on Friday.

“We feel we have a really good team, but we still haven’t gotten consistent 60-minute game,” Carolina left wing Jussi Jokinen(notes) said. “We need to be better.”

Tampa Bay’s Antero Niittymaki(notes) made 24 saves in first start of the season. Cam Ward(notes) stopped 34 shots for the Hurricanes.

NOTES: Brind’Amour played in his 1,409th NHL game, tying him for 27th place all-time with Paul Coffey. … Carolina coach Paul Maurice coached his 900th NHL game. … Tampa Bay claimed LW Radek Smolenak(notes) off waivers from Chicago and assigned him to Norfolk of the AHL. … Hurricanes D Joni Pitkanen(notes) (sore knee) missed his second straight game. … Lightning C Vincent Lecavalier(notes) has not scored a goal in his last 11 games. … Tampa Bay D Kurtis Foster(notes) (lower body) didn’t play for the third consecutive game.

I hated seeing Ryan Malone leave Pittsburgh. I'd take him back anytime!

@14 Pitbull you're so full of $hit it's coming out your ears. Maybe you had that experience but you make Raliegh sound like San Francisco in the late 60s. No way. Why the dogging Carolina? Disgruntled Bruins fans? I don't get it. I'm not a Canes fan, but its good to see a team in a "non-traditional" area get pretty good support. I've never heard anything about them suffering or talking about relocating. Cut the garbage. BTW good to see Ryan Malone picking up a Hat Trick. Well done sir!

I agree with you guys. Raleigh sucks. The worst part about it is the people. I used to be in the Marine Corps and was stationed two hours from Raleigh at Camp Lejeune. I went to Raleigh for a charity event one Christmas and had to wear my dress blues. People would come up to me and call me a "baby killer." I was walking down a street downtown and a man driving by hit me with a glass bottle. I guess the city has a terrible reputation of poor treatment towards military personnel and veterans. I'll never set foot in Raleigh again.

Chris B., I couldn't help noticing that you said "had" to live there. I mention it because when you are forced to live anywhere it colors your attitude towards the place (but it sounds like you lived near where Cory stayed). It is very unlike "choosing" to live somewhere, so your opinion is not only outdated but necessarily negatively biased.
Also, if you think Raleigh compares that badly to other cities then you haven't really been around much. Personally, I dislike cities altogether, finding their good points not outweighing their bad, but after all, it's the Carolina Hurricanes, not the Raleigh Hurricanes and I live about an hour away from the RBC center in a wonderful mid-sized town. Still, for those with an open mind for a more neutral opinion about the state capitol, here's a list of awards:

Cory. I had to live there for awhile. It was awful. Raleigh is the worst city east of the Mississippi and perhaps the country. It's muggy and overcast everyday. Downtown always smells and is infested with@#$%roaches. There's no good looking woman. They all look rundown and rough. As for the fanbase, it is pretty bad. I remember when they won the Cup in 06. I'm pretty sure they didn't sell out their building. I know tickets weren't selling fast and they threatened to black the game out on TV.

Ok, Cory, so we get you stayed in a bad part of town and didn't know your way around, but that's your own fault/ignorance. BTW, what 'Utopian Metroplolis' do you live in (I'm guessing some charming burgh like Erie, PA) and does it have it's seemier side as well? If so, we will try not to assume that it is just like the rest of the place. And for the record: nasty attitudes, decaying infrastructure, rudeness, freezing cold, and dirty snow do not give a city character.
There are a LOT of things about the south and it's people you can't understand unless you are born there or at least live there a while (I chose to unthaw here and get out of the overcast skies of Ohio where I was born). Some random examples: no honking car horns in traffic jams (considered rude), not eating the last piece of cake at a group function (out of politeness for others that may come late), chili and coleslaw on hamburgers (tried it, liked it). Bottom line: it's a different culture with a different way of doing things and the great game of hockey should be big enough for all, not just for areas with teams with fans that honor their club the exact same way you do, so stop advertising your ignorance and live and let live.

Just because 'Caniacs don't get all rabid and foam at the mouth on a public forum doesn't mean they don't care. It's called class, try it!

wow all this about the team that lost, what about the lightning? Give them some due, they actually have a decent team that will only get better.

The 'Canes fans would rather sit back and read some of the bullsh*t these supposed know-it alls write on here. Have any of you f*ck nuts ever been to Raleigh and actually watched a game. THE LOUDEST ARENA IN THE NHL. Try it sometime, then you'll have a clue what you're talking about. Why Quebec?? They couldn't even keep there other team....maybe they could sweet talk the 'yotes to move there? I doubt it.

We'll you can see that they don't have much of a fanbase on here. Nobody comments or cares about their games. I sometimes see comments from a couple of their seven fans.
