Red Wings beat Blackhawks 3-2 in their home opener

DETROIT (AP)—Chris Osgood(notes) predicts the reshaped Detroit Red Wings will end up contending for the Stanley Cup with a new emphasis on defense to make up for the scoring they lost in the offseason.

Osgood said Detroit’s home opener provided only a preview of what’s to come.

Kris Draper(notes) and Johan Franzen(notes) scored 1:34 apart late in the second period to put Detroit ahead and Osgood made 32 saves to help the Red Wings hold on for a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in a rematch of Western Conference finalists on Thursday night.

“We do the same thing every year and it’s going to be the same thing again,” said Osgood, who helped Detroit hoist the Cup two years ago and come within one win of repeating in June. “We’re going to be in the same position at the end where we’re going to have an opportunity to win like we do every year.”

The salary-cap strapped Red Wings lost four players who combined to score 88 goals last season.

Marian Hossa(notes) and Tomas Kopecky(notes) signed with Chicago, Mikael Samuelsson(notes) left for Vancouver, and Jiri Hudler(notes) bolted for Russia.

“We’re going to have a different look in April,” Osgood said. “We’re going to be harder to play against. You saw a glimpse of it with our penalty killing with our guys blocking shots.”

Chicago had a two-man advantage for 1:53 early in the second period and didn’t score.

“The 5-on-3 turned the game for us,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “It was a big win for our team to take some pressure off.”

Detroit opened the season by losing a pair of two-goal leads in losses to the St. Louis Blues in Sweden.

The Blackhawks controlled the game early, taking a 1-0 lead on Patrick Sharp’s(notes) goal early in the second period, but Osgood prevented them from adding to the lead.

“Ozzie was real good,” Babcock said. “I don’t know if he played one game that well in the first half last year.”

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, meanwhile, doesn’t want his club to get down about its 1-1-1 start.

“If we keep playing like that, we’ll find a way to win,” Quenneville said. “We had puck-possession time, we had chances, we had zone time.”

After Sharp scored, Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) tied it midway through the second on a shot that caromed off Chicago’s John Madden(notes) and past goalie Cristobal Huet(notes).

“The turning point was the one that went off my skate into the net,” Madden said. “Changed the momentum of the game. Before that, I thought we were in the driver’s seat.”

Kris Versteeg(notes) pulled the Blackhawks within a goal midway through the second period only to be denied a shot at overtime by Osgood.

“Ozzie had a heck of a game,” Quenneville said. “He played well against us in the playoffs, and he looked like the same goalie.”

The Red Wings eliminated Chicago from the playoffs last season in five games, then lost the Stanley Cup finals rematch.

Detroit began to put memories of its Game 7 loss to Pittsburgh in the past with a solid showing against its biggest Central Division rival.

“We’ve got to start at the bottom of the hill again,” Osgood said. “As time passes, I’m more disappointed because we were so close.”

The Blackhawks seemed to improve their chances with the signing of Hossa after his one-year shot at the Cup with the Red Wings didn’t work out. Hossa, though, is out after having shoulder surgery.

“He’s not skating yet,” Quenneville said. “He’s improving his range of motion and he’s on schedule to return in late November.”

NOTES: Detroit D Jonathan Ericsson(notes) appeared to try to keep weight off his left skate when he was hit by a puck during Chicago’s power play midway through the third period after getting hit with a puck. “He’s going to be fine,” Babcock said. … Huet made 21 saves. … The Red Wings signed 37-year-old F Brad May(notes) on Thursday and sent F Justin Abdelkader(notes) to Grand Rapids (AHL), hoping he would add toughness. May did, getting into a fight with Radek Smolenak(notes) midway through the first period. “It just gives you a little bit more swagger and he can look after your guys and attack people,” Babcock said. … Sharp has scored in all three of Chicago’s games. … There were several patches of empty seats in the upper and lower levels, but the Red Wings announced the game as a sellout crowd of 20,066.

    Actually Bulldog has a point.
But as an outsider (pens fan) looking at the Wings, some things become evident as pretty much every season progresses.
    1) The Wings are one of the few teams in the leaue that LEARNS from itself all year. The get progressively better....pretty much through the year. (seriously, how many times have you guys proven it to San Jose or Ana-whine)
    2) Your Farm System has 3-4 good, BIG, kids who could play Right Now. Babcock is a $#!t load smarter than 75% of the coaches out there.
    3) I dont EVER want to play the Red Wings in the Cup again, should we make it, and God hates me so its a given.
    Have a good season man!

Be for real, the Wings aren't going to win the cup this year. Everyone who thinks so should stop kidding themselves. We lost too many scorers. Though we have some young guys who play well, they are not at the level or have the ability of those guys we lost. The Wings have looked like crap in every game they played so far....be honest to yourself at least. They picked up the wrong free agents, washed up players. Look at their stats....one of their defensive pick-ups has 3 goals or so in all the years he played with a minus in the 20's or so. We need big guys who can score and skate, not little guys who constamntly get mowed over or their a**es kicked. On the other hand, all these teams that have the big name players and went a head and picked up more big named players, will have a hard time next year making the cap......like Chicago. They can't afford to keep Kane and the rest of their big names with the big money to Hossa....The Wings need to make some great moves next year. They have only a slight chance of making past the first round of the play-off's.

@da fat man: I'm automatically a 'him'? Yeah, because a lot of men are named May. Anyway, there's a difference between bashing a team and pointing out what's going wrong for a team. You were bashing, I wasn't. So don't put me in the same category as you. Thanks.

@85 Ron L, when you put it in those terms Huet is an even WORSE investment! I didn't think that was possible, but my calculations he'd now be SEVEN times more pricey than Osgood! Wow. For all the people still down on Delmore thinking he's appropriately in the AHL, how do you not believe in a guy who starred for the Hamburg Freezers!? That is the best name this side of the unfortunately now defunct, Iowa Chops! Franzen down and out, here is Delmore's chance to shine, an offensive defensman in the Paul Coffey mold.

Tim R, Datsyuk(s) just called. He's up for that circle jerk but says he wants to do it just like last Friday night - at your place... just you and him. Maybe play some ball hockey for a warm up. Then 'swing' by the Donkeys with a 'Get Well Soon' gift. Yer dun.

As much as it pains me to admit...da fat man is probably closer to reality than many of us Wings fans would like to admit. Statements such as the Wings are going to take the cup again this year after coming in first in the central again are delusional. Did you guys actually watch the first 3 games? Distracted or not the Wings should be a veteran enough team to know how to play basic and fundamental hockey. They certainly got lucky against the Hawks because as usual when they took the lead, they stopped skating and sat back until the pressure was on. If they don't play with any ambition, they may make the playoffs but will be knocked out in the first round or two.

Now if the Wings care to pull themselves together and play hockey...they do have a legit shot at the cup.

But it appears this year may be more of a re-building/re-loading year bringing up a few of the young guys and giving them full time experience. Those boys have the skill but they lack the experience.

@Don.....Don't jump the gun pal. Read that post again before getting offended. It's a far cry from my usual pink wing bashing. If you are offended at that, well, perhaps you'd better stay away when my prediction of the pink wings missing the playoffs comes true. BTW, you never answered my "Mindcrime" question from a few weeks ago. What WAS that about?

Wow, the pink wing homers/homos are TOUCHY! I am constantly accused of not posting hockey related comments and only being abusive; however I've posted ONLY hockey analysis and you ladies have a sore vag? Your fellow pink winger, "May", echoed my remarks/observations and there's not a "F*CK OFF" to be seen addressed to him? Could it be that you ladies realize that, as usual, I'm right about your pinkies being in serious trouble this season? I don't know what's worse, the section of pinky homers that reflexively attack anyone who dares not bow at the altar of your feminine team OR the section of homers that continually post the mindless drivel about the wings being guaranteed a playoff spot based on history? Both are pathetic and mindless. Continue living off past glory queerbos, it's ALL you ladies have this season!

As a lifelong Hawks fan I have something to say. I am so sorry for the bandwagoners. For me and most of the TRUE fans, we're just happy the Hawks are back where they should be. To the Wings fans, you guys should be happy that both teams are doing well because now the rivalry will get better through better games. Both teams are great and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. The origional six should rule the leauge and it finally might happen. So to any bandwagoners on any team.... SHUT UP!

I've come to the realization that Hawks fan smoke just as much crack as Penguins fans, and talk twice as much sh!t. Excuses, excuses! Hawks fans, you like saying that BS about outplaying the Wings. Did you watch on a old 13" B&W TV? Put down the pipe and look up at the score board. Your team lost. If the final score has your team on the losing end- your team was outplayed.

ahahaha..."band wagon hawks fans" thats gonna be a real short band wagon. If people think the wings are in a salary cap delemna...wait till you see the hawks in the next few seasons. They have truly thrown all their ducks in a row. If they dont do it this year, theyre done. They need to learn something from Kenny Holland and the Wings dynasty, not try to mock it. I can say dynasty, because in todays NHL is the closest thing you'll ever see to one, probably ever again. Good comment on whoever made the "Yzerman, Shanny, Hull" comparison....so very true!! What did we do when we were "done" before? Just win ANOTHER cup, haha. Detroit has what very few other teams come close to....CLASS & DEPTH. Theirs no stars on the Wings because they all can get it done. The hawks are playing football hockey, throwing a buncha names on a team with no rhyme or reason. The Red Wings also do what no other team can do, find the diamond in the rough and mold him into a true star...with class to boot.

GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!! Lets bring the cup back where it BELONGS!!!

I love how the Bandwagon Hawks fans are talking so much @#$%...the Red Wings are the better team history wise and right now. The Redwings have better players than the Hawks do. I don't understand how Bandwagon Hawks fans are saying the Red wings are done. They've been good for the past 2 decades, 18 straight playoff appearances, 11 stanley cups, a ton of Presidents Trophies, Campbell trophys. If any of the bandwagon hawks fans actually followed hockey before last year you'd know Detroit is never done. They have a great GM in Holland who knows how to run an organization, great scouts and a great system. They make sure to develop players before they're ready for the NHL. Look at Datsyuk and Zeterberg, they were low round draft picks, they're superstars. Apparently the Wings were done after Yzerman, Shanahan, and Hull but look at what they did, won another cup. Sorry about that.
