Schenn leads Kings over Ducks 4-1

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Brayden Schenn(notes), Los Angeles’ No. 1 draft pick, scored his first two goals of the preseason and Ryan Smyth(notes) also had a goal to lead the Kings to a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

Schenn, the fifth overall selection in the draft, is the brother of last year’s fifth overall pick—Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn(notes). The Kings’ 18-year-old center spent the previous two seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL, scoring 32 goals in 2008-09.

Rookie Jonathan Bernier(notes) made 19 saves after being staked to a 3-0 lead.

Bernier spent the previous two seasons with Manchester of the AHL, but recorded his first NHL victory on opening night of the 2007-08 season against Anaheim with 26 saves in a 4-1 win in London—the Ducks’ first regular-season game as defending Stanley Cup champions.

Schenn opened the scoring on a power play at 4:10 of the first period, getting a centering pass from Jack Johnson(notes) and converting his own rebound while Saku Koivu(notes) was serving a hooking penalty.

Smyth, who was acquired from Colorado on July 3 in a trade that sent defensemen Kyle Quincey(notes) and Tom Preissing(notes) to the Avalanche, scored the Kings’ second goal. He carried the puck through the right circle with Anaheim defenseman Ryan Whitney(notes) trailing the play and jammed the puck past Jonas Hiller(notes) at 10:36 of the second period.

Less than 5 minutes later, defenseman Thomas Hickey(notes) carried the puck into the Anaheim zone and faked a slap shot at the top of the right circle before sliding a crisp cross-ice pass to Schenn, who beat Hiller high to the glove side with a short wrist shot. Hiller finished with 22 saves.

Coming off a 4-3 overtime victory over Phoenix in which they were outshot 30-2 in the first period and trailed 3-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation, the Ducks got on the board 32 seconds before the second intermission as Teemu Selanne(notes) set up Koivu’s power-play goal while Kings defenseman Alec Martinez(notes) was off for holding.

The Kings and Ducks have one more preseason meeting, on Sept. 27 at Anaheim, and will face off six more times during the regular season.

Anze Kopitar(notes) scored an empty-net goal for the Kings with 15 seconds remaining.

Calm down people. The Ducks will make the playoffs (their top two lines are too good not to). The Kings may make the playoffs, but they are FINALLY going in the right direction. We are loaded with so much young talent that this is getting really fun.

It's nice to see when Management has to send down guys like Moller and Loktionov because they will be allowed to actually develop properly instead of rushed.

Hickey has an outside shot of making the club, but he really should be in Manchester for a full year.

Schenn will NOT make the club. They may keep him around the first 9 games, just for the experience, but I sincerely doubt any longer than that. The plan all along was to get him in for the full camp, then back to Juniors to continue to develop his full game. No need to rush him at all.

Bernier is finally rounding into the goaltender they felt he could be when drafted in 2006, and he may not even make the club. He can go up and down, without passing through waivers. Ersberg cannot.

The real story out of camp for the Kings is the stellar play of Jack Johnson. Known as JMFJ (Jack MotherF***in' Johnso) hasn't been anything more than Jack Johsnon the singer. The MF is starting to show up, on defense and especially on offense. With Johnson, Doughty, and some other youngsters...I'm giddy just thinking about what this team can be in another year.

The Kings, if they make the playoffs, will be the 8th/7th seed this year. They will probably get smoked in the 1st round, but I'm okay with that...the experience will be invaluable. 2010-2011 is the year this franchise finally makes some real noise.

The chances of the Kings finishing better than the Ducks are slim to none. At least this year. However, I am excited to see the progress in the years to come. We have a great shot at being a significant team in a couple of years, while the Ducks just get older. GO KINGS GO!

The ducks are not the team they were a couple years ago, but they should easily make the playoffs and are still talented enough that a hot streak by Giguire/Hiller could easily get them to the finals. My fellow Kings fans need to settle down a little bit with their optimism and trash talking, but so do the somewhat arrogant Duck fans. The Kings should make the playoffs this year and could be real good if Kopitar, Brown and Frolov contine to mature and stay healthy and Smyth and Williams return to form. It would be great for hockey in this area if we could have both teams playing well and make the rivalry what it was before.

With the Brandon Wheat Kings hosting the Mem Cup this year, it would be a shame for Schenn not to go back to Junior. He will be a leader on that team and gain valuable experience.

Kendog16fly... it was only a preseason game. Write down your words, tape them to your wall, and re-read them at the end of the season. Talk is cheap and your rambling sentence means nothing. And one win against a team that played four games in a row means nothing either. Look, this is going to go nowhere but its a fact that the Ducks (or Duckies) have done better than the Kings (or Queens) in the post season since 1993 when the Ducks came onto the season. There... enough talking smack, I've delved in it.... now you hockey loving bastards root for your team and enjoy the season.... GO DUCKS! By the way, wouldn't call the Ducks old and washed up.... I wouldn't call the Kings young and washed up would I? Don't believe in stating the obvious.

So far head coach Terry Murray hasn't send Brayden Schenn to Manchester Monarch yet. The Kings still have 35 players. He might make the roster. That would be a big surprise. Drew Doughty made the roster when he was 18. Oscar Moler was with the Kings last year, but he was sent to Machester Monarch on Sun. 9/20/09. He's got bumped out. I am a King fan. Go Kings!

Braden Schenn is very impressive. He is only 18 years old. He'll go back to Junior league for about a year, but he'll be back. Kings management will have a tough a decision. Kings vs. Islanders at (Kansas) Tue. 9/22/09. Go Kings!

The LA Kings are going to surprise a lot of pundints and critics this year. No, they won't win the Stanley Cup, but they will see the second round of the playoffs depending on what happens in the injury department. Of all NHL teams (including the Toronto Maple Leafs) the LA Kings have the largest fan base hiding in the closet -- and many would reply "For good reason." This is the first year in a long time we'll have good reason to cheer for Teddy Purcell and the LA Kings. I'm still a Detroit Red Wings man, but a part of my heart belongs to the LA Kings. Go Kings.

I wouldn't be so sure on that Eric. The "quacks" do have experience and a better team on paper, but the youthful King's always play the "quacks" tough. I wouldn't be surprised if they split this season. GO KING'S GO!!!
