Legwand leads Predators past ‘Canes, 4-2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—David Legwand(notes) had a goal and two assists to lead the Nashville Predators past Carolina 4-2 on Friday night in the Hurricanes’ exhibition opener.

Mike Santorelli(notes) and Dan Hamhuis(notes) each had a goal and an assist for the Predators. Peter Olvecky(notes) added an empty netter on the power play, Martin Erat(notes) had two assists and Pekka Rinne(notes) stopped 10 shots in 1 1/2 periods.

Erik Cole(notes) and Eric Staal(notes) scored for Carolina, and Cam Ward(notes) made 21 saves.

Legwand’s go-ahead goal came early in the second when he snatched a turnover in the Hurricanes’ zone and snapped the puck past Ward to make it 2-1.

Both teams skated without some key players: Nashville held out forwards Jason Arnott(notes) and J.P. Dumont(notes) while Carolina captain Rod Brind’Amour(notes) didn’t play.
