Red Wings 2, Penguins 4

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Stanley Cup finals won’t duplicate last year’s, and a momentum-swinging period by the Pittsburgh Penguins put in doubt whether there will be a repeat champion.

Jordan Staal’s(notes) short-handed goal during back-to-back Detroit power plays started Pittsburgh’s comeback, and the Penguins scored three goals in less than 6 minutes of the second period Thursday night to win 4-2 and tie the series at 2.

Evgeni Malkin(notes), enjoying the best postseason since Wayne Gretzky’s in 1993, and Sidney Crosby(notes) had a goal and an assist each to help rally the Penguins from a 2-1 deficit a year to the day Detroit raised the Stanley Cup in Pittsburgh by winning Game 6.

Tyler Kennedy(notes) also scored and Marc-Andre Fleury(notes), with his second successive excellent game, made 37 saves.

Until Game 4, the finals followed the same pattern as last year’s: Detroit won the first two at home, then dropped Game 3 in Pittsburgh. But the Red Wings couldn’t follow up their 2-1 road victory in Game 4 of last year, one decided largely when they killed off a lengthy Pittsburgh 5-on-3 advantage, and now these finals are the best-of-three.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Detroit, with Game 6 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday after the series’ first two-day break.

“It’s a race to four (wins) now,” Pittsburgh’s Pascal Dupuis(notes) said.

The Red Wings were done in by a bad second period and dreadful special teams. Pittsburgh has converted on 4 of 9 power plays, and this game swung when the Penguins got a goal—and the Red Wings didn’t—during 3:59 of continuous Detroit power-play time. Detroit was 0 for 4 with the man advantage.

With Detroit up 2-1 following goals by Darren Helm(notes) and Brad Stuart(notes) less than 3 minutes apart to end the first and start the second, Staal—who had only two goals in 20 playoff games—got loose after Max Talbot’s(notes) up-ice pass.

The 6-foot-4 Staal used his lengthy stride to thread defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) and Brian Rafalski(notes) and beat Chris Osgood(notes) at 8:35 of the second. Staal had a record-tying seven short-handed goals as an 18-year-old rookie in 2006-07, but had only one since.

“Max made a great play … and I lowered my head and went for it,” Staal said.

Staal’s goal instantly changed a major opportunity by Detroit to seize control not only of the game but the series into a tie game, and the 17,132 jammed into a suddenly rocking Mellon Arena sensed how big the play might be. And they were right.

“That was a big momentum changer for us,” Talbot said. “The building was so loud, it gave us a lot of emotion.”

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said, “They have a chance to go up 3-1, but Jordan speeds up ice … and kind of got us rolling.”

The Penguins finished off killing the second power play and, less than a minute later, Crosby and Malkin—their signature stars—worked a 2-on-1 rush for Crosby’s 15th of the playoffs and 30th point. With 35 points, Malkin has more than any player since Gretzky had 40 in 1993.

Kennedy, a Staal linemate who had no goals in five games, finished it off with Pittsburgh’s third goal in a span of 5:37 by scoring off two quick passes by Crosby and Chris Kunitz(notes). Kennedy won the race to a loose puck with Henrik Zetterberg(notes), who may be wearying from shadowing Crosby shift after shift.

“They had some 3-on-2s and 2-on-1s, and we can’t do that against them because they’re too skilled,” Zetterberg said.

On the Detroit bench, a sour-faced Mike Babcock had the look of a coach wondering if four games in six nights for his tiring Red Wings might have favored the younger Penguins. All four Pittsburgh goals came from players who are 22 or younger.

“We were playing all right, but the power play hurt us for sure,” Babcock said. “It sucked the life out of us.”

Before Pittsburgh scored eight goals in two games at home, Osgood had allowed a goal or less in eight of 18 playoff games.

The Penguins know a 2-0 deficit doesn’t mean certain defeat, although only one of 32 teams has won the finals after losing the first two on the road. They rallied to beat the Capitals two rounds ago after losing the first two in Washington, and they’ve pointed to that comeback as reason for hope they could pull this one off.

“The last couple have been desperation (games) for us,” Crosby said.

The Red Wings had a letdown a few minutes before the start when Hart Trophy finalist Pavel Datsyuk(notes), out for six games with an injured foot, skated in the pregame warmups but decided he couldn’t play. The Wings were optimistic the day before he might play, with Datsyuk joking he had was eager to return because he was drinking too much beer while sitting out.

Then, with only 1:12 gone, the Red Wings did what Babcock said they couldn’t do with an ailing penalty kill by taking take an unnecessary penalty. Niklas Kronwall(notes) tripped Malkin, and Malkin took advantage by scoring with only 2:39 gone, with Staal assisting.

Malkin is trying to become the first player since the Penguins’ Mario Lemieux in 1992 to lead the NHL in regular season and playoff scoring.

Detroit tied it with 1:41 left in the period. Helm stole Rob Scuderi’s(notes) pass out of the corner and beat Fleury inside the far post from the right faceoff circle dot.

Notes

The Red Wings’ 44-52 record in Game 4s is easily their worst of any playoff game. .. Detroit F Kris Draper(notes) returned from a groin injury, with rookie Justin Abdelkader(notes) sitting out despite scoring goals in each of the first two games. … Detroit F Marian Hossa(notes) didn’t score after having two goals in each of his three previous Game 4s this spring. … Pittsburgh is 4-0 in Game 4s this spring.

northlander57 - It is an excuse and a pretty poor one. All of the unbiased visitors seem to have noted that the poor calls evened out pretty well. I would also point out that the Wings had two consecutive power plays and GAVE UP A GOAL. That was truly pathetic, especially since Staal had to skate AROUND Rafalski to get into position to score and he was killing part of the second penalty. The Wings had nothing in the tank and began standing around. The "obvious offside" required several replays to determine. The six skaters was a terrible call, just like Z's "goaltending". I would suggest that in a game where you had more power plays than the opponent you really don't get the "the refs were terrible" excuse. Oh, and for Pete's Sake, give Kunitz the goal in the open net hook. Give the Penguins credit for bringing their A game and making theis a real series as opposed to last year when they stood around for the first two games with their tongues hanging out while the Wings rammed it down their throats. The Pens have grown up. The Red Wings have remained excellent, the gap has been narrowed, we will find out soon whether it has been closed.

I really don't want this to sound like an excuse, but how many calls are the refs going to blow in the Penguins favor. Game three, it was too many men on the ice for at least 30 secs, and in game four the linesmen missed an obvious offsides that led directly to the first goal. Now, I agree, the Wings seem to have left their 'A' game in Detroit, but call the game right.

Oh please, quit comparing the Wings to the Devils with this "clutch and grab" nonsense. Quit making excuses and let the players play the game.

That should be the scary thing for ALL Pens fans Zeb...Ozgood normally does real good after bad games, 1.74 GAA(although that has probably gone up now) in games after allowing three or more goals in the previous game with an 8-2 record(8-3 now), but he wasn't with his friendly home crowd, Pitt had ALL the momentum, and Detroits D looks as if they need a couple days off, Zetty can't do it all himself, one body can't smother both Malkin and Crosby. Plus, everyone always forgets about, Letang, Staal, Gill, Kennedy, who aren't the best players in the league to say the least, but with ALL of Detroits attention on Sid and Evgeni, opens up everything for the TEAM, which they have taken advantage of these past couple of games...It seems Pitt has done their job and found a weakness in Detroit, I knew it was only a matter of time until they made this an interesting series, I still say there will be a game 7, I dont know or care who will win it but it will be a good one none the less! Go Kings!

all of us can talk trash about who's team is better but the players are the ones that have to go out there and prove who is better not us. so this is all really pointless. you guys are talking trash about how the wings look tired and all that but realistically the wings outplayed the pens most of that game. pens did a great job capitalizing on the wings mistakes though. too talented of a team to give away the puck that many times. but if the wings win us wings fans will come on here and brag like we had somethign to do with it and the same for you pens fans. if the pens win the cup i will be pissed for like 5 mins and then i will forget all about it and go about my life.

Whats the matter, did your Mom get on your case about picking up your clothes off the floor and put you in a bad mood? And I bet you"re trying to grow a Cindy Crosby look a like beard, too, huh? Nothing has changed. . . Wings clearly have the best team. . . Pens have the TWO best offensive players in the league. . . Pens are still growing though and just starting to reach their potential.

BUT what is different this year is the wings look OLD. Tired. Saw it clearly in game one's third period and it has been more noticeable with each game. Lat night they were completely spent. Outplayed MUCH of the game. Pens are getting more confident and stronger. . . but they have to win game 5. The two day break is going to help Detroit before game six, especially if Datsyuk can play.

I think it could be over in six either way.

great game and amazing 2nd. The pens outplayed the wings this game with that huge short handed goal by staal and the following momentum. Gotta see if the pens can play a new game in detroit and create that same momentum( i dont think it will carry over and instead needs to be recreated). The pens looked much better at cycling the puck, completing passes and overal puck possesion compared to thier absolute failure of those things in games 1 and 2 (compared to detriot amazing smart hockey that they do so well... except these last 2 games with all the turnovers). i think this best of 3 series will be great and would love to see pens win it in 6 at home! but we will see how game 5 goes. go pens

Settle down Pens fans. Great win, totally outplayed the dings, absolutely loved it. Best 6 minutes of Hockey I've seen in 8 years (Kings v. dings G4 2001), still a LOT of work to do, momentum has definitely swung, need to keep riding it. Win the Cup this year, shut these dings gas bags up (I do notice the commentary a LOT less@#$%y, I recall this was going to be over in 4 or 5) and let's make this a REAL RIVALRY! The Overthrow continues Saturday!

They sit outside because it is a great atmosphere. Of course it's not over, but if the Wings keep making bad decisions it will be. Draper sucks and Abdekater has 2 goals, bad decision.

So how often does Hank Z. get beat up by guys named Missy, just curious. I still don't understand why opposing fans refer to the Pens as girls. They are matching the wings in every category including hits.

Only one crying last night was Lidstrom when Cooke tried to drive him through the boards.

You pens fans crack me up why would we sit outside our arena and look like desperate IDIOTS we know what it's like to WIN did any of you forget last year. All of you so called hockey fans are talkin like the series is over last time I checked it took 4 games to win a series. I didn't hear all this talk when you lost the first 2 games. We'll see if the babies show up in Detroit and score more than 2 goals like they did in the first 2 games. When we get the last change and Hank is shadowing the baby and shutting him down like he did the first 2 games. We'll see if Missy and Crissy are crying and trying to start fights because they can't score....HA HA HA HA HA....

Rough 2 games for Osgood in Pittsburgh there, bet he will be glad to go home! I gotta say Well done Pens! that 2nd Period was HUGE! Jordan Staal's shorthanded goal really got the Pens going! Hope the Pens now with the momentum can go to Detroit and take game 5 and have a chance to win the Cup back home in Pittsburgh! Pens playing like a Stanley Cup Champion team, getting some great chances and when they get going watch out cause they really make things happen. There was some really nice goals and passes in game 4 by the Pens players.
I hope pens can keep it up and take game 5 and win it back home! GO PENS! Pens in 6!

Thank you Mike Babcock for taking one of your best young forwards out of the game and playing Draper, did Draper do anything besides trying to cheap shot Crosby!?

What's the game plan now.....Kronwall against Crosby, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and Rafalski against Malkin?

Kronwall is good for one thing.....hitting somebody smaller than him when their head is down (Havlat). Malkin is destroying Kronwall and it will continue

Wings get shut out if not for Guerin putting a perfect screen on Fluery and Scuderi making one mistake.

I believe Hockeytown has a new zip code....just out of curiosity, how many Hockeytown fans will be sitting outside of their arena on Saturday....Zero. Oh that's right, they still have tickets available at the box office.

A little tough for Ozzie when he faces more than 15 shots per game.
