Red Wings beat Blackhawks on Samuelsson’s OT goal

  • Print

DETROIT (AP)—The Red Wings have put the Chicago Blackhawks on notice. The defending Stanley Cup champions are two wins away from getting back to the finals, and they aren’t even playing their best hockey.

Mikael Samuelsson(notes) scored 5:14 into overtime and Chris Osgood(notes) made 37 saves, lifting Detroit to a 3-2 win over the Blackhawks on Tuesday night and a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was relieved to win a game in which his team was often outplayed. They played for the fourth time in a week, including two hard-fought games against the Anaheim Ducks.

“I don’t think we had any legs or any pop whatsoever,” Babcock said. “I thought we had good will and good determination, but no legs.”

The Blackhawks had nothing to show for their grit, desire and talent.

“It’s a brutal loss,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said.

The fourth-seeded Blackhawks, playing in their first conference final since 1995, now have the daunting task of beating the defending champions in four out of five games to advance.

“We want to beat them one game, the next one, and that’s our concern,” Quenneville said. “We should be excited about being back in the United Center to recapture some excitement and enthusiasm.”

Game 3 is Friday night in Chicago.

Detroit is trying to become the first defending champion to get back to the finals since New Jersey did in 2001. The Red Wings are the last team to repeat, winning the Cup in 1997 and ’98.

“This gives us a good start, but this is a team that is going to be tough to put away,” Babcock said.

Detroit won Game 2 on a 3-on-1 rush, taking advantage of Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell’s(notes) turnover near Detroit’s blue line.

Jiri Hudler(notes) raced up the left side with the puck, pushed it to his right toward Valtteri Filppula(notes), whose drop pass set up Samuelsson for a shot from the slot that beat Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin(notes).

“I just kept skating with them,” Samuelsson said. “It was a great play.”

Campbell lamented his role.

“If I’d do the play over again, maybe, I’d put a little sauce on that,” he said. “But I’ve got to make that play.”

After losing 5-2 in the series opener, the young Blackhawks weren’t going to get routed again.

Jonathan Toews’(notes) second goal of the game with 7:40 left in regulation pulled Chicago into a 2-2 tie. Toews gave Chicago the lead midway through the first period, but Brian Rafalski(notes) got Detroit even later in the frame. Dan Cleary made it 2-1 early in the second.

Khabibulin stopped 35 shots.

The first two goals were scored on power plays. The final two in regulation came at even strength.

Chicago had a two-man advantage in the first period and grabbed a 1-0 lead during the second half of the power play with 7:11 left in the period.

After Samuelsson left the penalty box, he failed to clear the puck out of his end. Toews was credited with a goal that went off the skate of Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson(notes).

Detroit has given up a power-play goal in a franchise-record 11 straight playoff games. It is the NHL’s longest streak during one postseason in two decades.

The Red Wings tied it less than 4 minutes later. Rafalski’s shot sailed past teammate Marian Hossa’s(notes) stick and got by Khabibulin, who didn’t see the puck because Tomas Holmstrom(notes) was perched in front.

Cleary scored for the third straight game, following up on his two-goal performance in Game 1 and his series-clinching goal against Anaheim in the conference semifinals.

Toews bounced back with a strong game after he and teammate Patrick Kane(notes) were held without a point in Game 1. Kane had two of his three shots in the opening period Tuesday after not recording a shot on Sunday.

Quenneville split up the young stars, and Detroit focused on slowing down Kane after his active start.

“He looked like he was having way too much fun,” Babcock said. “I thought he should’ve gotten run over a few times.”

Notes

Pittsburgh allowed a power-play goal in 11 straight playoff games in 1989, according to STATS, LLC. … Toews has six goals in the playoffs. … Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom’s(notes) assist on Rafalski’s goal was his 116th in the playoffs, moving him ahead of Steve Yzerman and into first place on the Red Wings’ career list. He tied Larry Robinson for fourth among defenseman on the NHL list.

Lakers? Isn't this a hockey blog? But since you brought it up... Billups and his baby blue wrecking crew are taking the Lakers out tonight. They were very lucky to pull out a victory in game one.

Ronny, He wouldn't really make a difference in this series but next year I'd expect him to be a 3rd line center who has size and a very good playmaker. Well, at least he used to be........ : )

DOC!,...talk to me my boy!.....who's this brophy kid?..ya really think we need him? i'm all ears.
And if there's one thing i would do right now if i was the hawks, is give Heut a start in game 3,..just to remind him and all the fans that he has HALF our victories this season. Bulin aint been all that sharp as far as i'm concerned, tho he definately need those mopes to kick butt inthe slot moving bodies,..they get burned every time someone plants themselves there, screening everything,..same as in canucks series,..u'd think they would get it by now. Just a change in net at home to shake things up a bit is all..never know.

plaguedog : Yeah, I found that annoying. It's like, buddy, show some f-ing remorse already! You could have left Detroit tied at one. If the Hawks end up losing the likes of Havlat or Sharp because of this guy's contract that will be a damn shame. 7 million? Is that what the 3rd or 4th best D-man gets these days. I liked Campbell in Buffalo and I do like him now (his speed is awesome) but have some humility Brian, you blew it. That said, Kaner's got to come back stronger on the backcheck. I am still hopeful, however, the Hawks have to even the series at home. People say you cannot come back from a deficit like this against the Wings. Umm...I'm thinking Canuck fans have a tad different perspective on that "insurmountable lead" logic.

I would blame the 3 on 1 in overtime more on a bad backhand pass by Campbell before you place blame on a 20 year old playoff rookie. Campbell even said after the game he would make that pass a hundred more times, that he knows he can complete it. What a fool, seriously, maybe against 28 other team in the league but you do not, cannot turn the puck over at the blue line against the Red Wings. His comment alone pissed me off more then the actual play. He is way over paid and what a moron for even saying that.

TC's Bodyguard pretty much has it right. Unfortunately the greed, short sightedness, laziness and massive mismanagement stemming from dings season ticket holders like Rick the d!ck Waggoner are going to cost Millions of jobs throughout the US and that is no laughing matter. I'm sorry to all the non-dings fans who lost or are losing their jobs due to this. Back in 2002 they played the Mayberry tune on the Arena to mock Carolina, proving not only how unclassy an organization the dings are, but how shortsighted they are. How many michigan people have fled the state to live in that very place? For a team one bogus goal away from being on the golf course themselves the Hockey expertise provided by dings fans is equally short sighted. You'll see. The changing of the guard is just around the corner!

TC's Bodyguard, you sir are a simpleton and the epitome of a sore loser. To rip at a city about economic hard times and people losing their homes just makes you a douche bag. I've had plenty of family and relatives that have lived in the windy city and I have spent plenty of time there myself... and let me tell you, it's no damn better than any other big city! Just like Detroit, the weather sucks 80% of the time, you have your crime and run down neighbor hoods, unemployment and yes, pot holes! I bet you have not lived anyplace else! They way some of you Chi-town idiots cut down the Motor City and place Chicago on a pedestal you would think you live in Maui or some other paradise. GIVE ME A BREAK! Get over yourself already. Go pack your arteries with a few Vienna sausages, wash 'em down with an Old Style and watch the Wings take your team to school!

To TC's Bodyguard You Sir are an idiot. last time I checked this is a nationwide recession, lots of people still have jobs here. As a matter of fact the people of Michigan work harder and take more pride in their work than any other place I have ever been, and I've been around. Sure the city has problems so does your's,but Michigan as a whole is a beautiful place to live. I think you're just really sour because your team is getting schooled by a much better and more experienced team after you ran around and bragged about how they were going beat the wings. Hey look, no hard feelings we wont take your city bashing personal and when we sweep your sorry hockey team out of the playoffs in your own building just try not to take it to hard okay. GO WINGS!!!

Oh and also, I really wish all these Wings games were on FSN Detroit or CBC instead of NBC and VS. Good God all the announcers have done throughout the playoffs is basically bash the Wings in every game, have an endless stream of features and blathering about everyone on the opposing team and basically from every game I've seen the announcers and intermission commentators may as well have been jacking off the the team against the Red Wings, with their completely one-sided broadcasts. It's ridiculous.

This was a great game. Although I for about the first 1 1/2 periods in particular the officiating was absolutely terrible. I'm still trying to figure out how the hell at least two of the Red Wings penalties were penalties; that coupled with them letting Chicago just barrel into the Wings players, on at least three or four occasions with elbows or cross-checks, with complete impunity. I wasn't paying attention, did we get the same set of refs and linesman from the Anaheim series, or is officiating actually starting to get this pathetic in this league at times?

I guess all I can say is is that around halfway through the 2nd period it evened out, and my Red Wings won so I guess I can live with it a bit.

With that said, the Wings need to find a mix between what they did in games 1 and 2 to truly shut down Chicago. They were a bit more solid I thought in game 1 except for the turnovers in their own end; that's been a problem all year but that was ridiculous. And in game two some people think they were stronger but I disagree. They didn't turn it over as much and shut them down for about a period or so straight like game 1 but they let Chicago play their game too much and sped up the tempo the way they like it more than they should've allowed. No game is perfect but a mix of how they executed in the first two games, not the extremes one way or the other despite winning, is going to be needed to avoid this from being a long series. As much as I'd love a sweep before completely destroying Carolina or Pittsburgh in 5 or 6 games to go back-to-back, I think if the Wings keep up the occasionally lackadaisical (sic?) play they'll get burned in at least one game in Chicago this weekend and risk a longer series than necessary....

    GO WINGS!!!!!!

Thats pretty arrogant. People in Michigan have gone through more in 5 years than you'll go through in your pathetic life. Hockey is not the only thing we care about, but its a great sport that relieves us of a little bit of pain that we go through in this broken state.

Detroit can go ahead and celebrate all they want, after all - these people have so little to live for other than the Red Wings. No jobs, no money... yup, glad to see that hockey is #1. "Hey look at me! I'm unemployed and I can't pay the mortgage on my house... of course, I have plenty of money to buy tickets to a hockey game." People in Michigan just plain suck. I'll take being down 0-2 and have my job than to be up 2-0 and have to march right on over to the unemployment line the next day. Detroit is horrible and a good hockey team isn't going to fix that.

Crosby is NOT as good as Malkin but we still get Cindy crammed at us at every opportunity by the NHL. I think top three are (in order) Malkin, Ovechkin, Crosby and I'll toss in Datsyuk for good measure. As for game #3 in Chitown, what will be the next excuse for yet another Hawks loss? I hope the wings let them win one so they can win the conference back at home. GO WINGS!!! I think there will be many Wings/Hawks playoff series coming over the next 5 years. That is as long as the "young" Hawks don't run off for more money elsewhere. Learn from the Wings and play more to win and the love of the game then for the money. Look at Sergei Federov (schmuck), he left for more money just when the Wings were getting good. What has he done lately? Time to retire Sirgay.
