Not even close: Penguins beat Caps 6-2 in Game 7

  • Print

WASHINGTON (AP)—For a guy who supposedly shies from the limelight, Sidney Crosby(notes) was as good as could be in the first Game 7 of his career.

The rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins were pretty close to perfect, too.

Crosby scored twice to raise his NHL-leading playoff goal total to 12, his teammates shut down his big rival, Alex Ovechkin, most of the night, and the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the Eastern Conference finals for the second consecutive season.

Crosby “won’t say he likes front and center, the big stage, or anything like that,” Penguins forward Bill Guerin(notes) said. “But he really knows how to perform in it.”

That’s for sure.

Still, Crosby took no outward pleasure in coming out ahead in the second-round series otherwise known as Sid the Kid vs. Alexander the Great.

“It feels good, just because of the way the series went,” Crosby said, “not particularly because it was me and him.”

Everyone chipped in for the Penguins, from the stars to the second thoughts, from regular-season scoring leader Evgeni Malkin’s(notes) two assists, to fourth-line forward Craig Adams’(notes) first goal in 42 career postseason games. Second-year defenseman Kris Letang(notes), 38-year-old Guerin and Jordan Staal(notes) scored, too. Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) made 19 saves and didn’t allow a goal until his team led 5-0.

Indeed, plenty of Penguins considered the key moment Fleury’s nerve-testing save on two-time NHL goal leader Ovechkin on a breakaway all of 3:01 into a still-scoreless game.

“That sends your team a message right away,” Crosby said. “It allows you to calm down a little.”

Even Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said: “It didn’t seem like we had a lot of emotion, but if Alex would have put that one in on the breakaway, who knows? It might have been a different story.”

Perhaps. But the Penguins dominated at both ends, and needed less than 22 1/2 minutes to forge a four-goal lead that moved Boudreau to switch goalies.

“We were surprised” at how easy things went, Malkin said.

Pittsburgh’s 4-3 series victory after trailing 2-0 moves it closer to a second consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup finals, something the team last did in 1991 and 1992. The Penguins will face the Bruins or Hurricanes, who play their second-round Game 7 at Boston on Thursday night.

For the Capitals, the setback extends some dispiriting trends. They are 2-6 in Game 7s, including 0-3 against the Penguins. And they have lost seven of eight playoff series against Pittsburgh—including four times after Washington held a two-game lead.

The NHL boasted that it’s the first time since 2001 three conference semifinals went the distance, and the league, its TV partners and fans had to be excited about the potential drama on tap Wednesday. In addition to all of the big names on the ice, there was this: Five of the series’ first six games were decided by one goal—and three went to overtime.

“I can’t describe the ups and downs of the series,” Crosby said.

Nothing but ups for his team on this night, in part because Pittsburgh scored goals 8 seconds apart in the first period. And just kept on scoring.

Crosby put the visitors ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal about 7 1/2 minutes in from his favorite spot on the ice: the net’s doorstep. He assisted on Pittsburgh’s third goal, then added something of a finishing touch with another power-play goal in the third period. Crosby stole the puck from his rival, Ovechkin, before beating Varlamov’s replacement, Jose Theodore(notes), to make it 6-1.

That truly was an unimaginable margin in this tight-as-could-be series: Entering Wednesday, the teams were tied or separated by one goal 92 percent of the time. Neither team had led by three goals at any point in Games 1-6.

“It just hurts,” Ovechkin said. “I don’t want to talk about me, personally. It’s all about team.”

His too-late-to-mean-anything goal, in the second period, allowed Ovechkin to finish the series with 14 points—one more than Crosby and the first time an NHL player reached that total since 1995. But that’s little consolation, of course.

When the game ended, Crosby and Ovechkin met at center ice for the customary post-series handshakes. They’ve traded hits on the ice and trash talk off it this season, yet both said the right things Wednesday.

“I just said, ‘Great series.’ There was a lot of eyes on the series,” Crosby said. “It was a battle for both teams. Individually, we both wanted to make sure we did a great job.”

And what did Ovechkin tell Crosby, his predecessor as league MVP?

“I just wished him good luck,” Ovechkin said, “and told him to win the Stanley Cup.”

Notes

Boudreau said Ovechkin and Mike Green(notes) played with injuries. … The most lopsided score in a Game 7 in NHL history is Detroit’s 7-0 victory over Colorado in the 2002 Western Conference finals, according to STATS LLC. … Penguins D Sergei Gonchar(notes) had an assist in his return to the lineup after being sidelined by a knee injury since a hit by Ovechkin in the first period of Game 4. Ovechkin apologized when they spoke after Game 7.

It was a great series PERIOD..... Now lets get on to Semins remarks that he made about Crosby earlier in the season.. Can skate a little, has a good head on his shoulders, but, isn't anywhere in Ovies league... Your right about that Semin, he's in a league all of his own... How many points you have Semin? We know you didn't have any goals... So now that you've gotten to see (the kid) up close and personal for seven games, and personelly saw what he's capable of doing... whatcha think??? Next time you feel like shootin off your big mouth, know who it is your talkin about...

The Capitals losing to the Penguins has always been a spring tradition. No one has mentioned that here. Yahoo ought to get rid of these stupid comment boards (again!). Most of the posts are ridiculous. If not for the entertainment value (people laugh at you stupid posters), these boards would shrivel up and go away. Simply put, the Penguins won. The Capitals lost. It is time for the Washington fans to move on to football. Oops. That's a depressing thought. What are they picked to finish in their division? 4th of 4. Go Pens! Go Steelers! Go play golf Capitals!

Thank you Caps for an exciting season! Sucks it had to end this way, but the better team won. I haven't seen this much excitement from a team since the 1998 playoff run.

For the bandwaggon fans who booed this team and left early "SHAME ON YOU!"

If you're a fan who stayed until the end and cheered "PROPS TO YOU!"

These two teams are going to have great futures. Looking forward to next season! Go Caps Go!

A poll was taken AFTER OV's 65 goal MVP season of last year. Last year OV scored more goals and was the hands down winner of the Hart. Despite this, Crosby topped him again :

If you could pick one player to build your team around for the next five years, who would it be? A sniper like Alexander Ovechkin? A playmaker like Sidney Crosby? Maybe a stalwart goaltender such as Roberto Luongo?

It's a tough choice, and it's one that TSN asked NHL general managers to make as part of a poll conducted for the NHL on TSN Season Preview Show, which aired Wednesday.

Twenty-eight GMs took part in the third annual poll for TSN, and the franchise player most coveted was Crosby, with 98 points in a 5-3-1 weighted system. Crosby was the top choice on 15 ballots.

So, half the GM's in league (you know, those guys who earn hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars per year to construct franchises) would build their team around Crosby. Interesting.

Nice try Jessica S. "At least ovie scored a goal." Wow... like he had to try real hard to put the puck in a net WITHOUT A GOALIE IN IT. and as for Drew E. I don't even think a forklift would do it for ovechkin to hold Sid's jock. NASA would need to construct some astronomical device to even begin thinking about holding that jock.

beywolfe1player : Mark Messier was a far more devastating bodychecker on the Oilers. He moved to centre when he went to the Rangers. Gretzky was the playmaking centre (well a playmaking centre who scored 92, 87, 73, 71, 62, 55, 52 and 51 goals!!!) while Messier was their power forward at wing. He was a 50 goal scorer whose hits were equally devastating to anything OV has ever done. Cam Neely was a 3-time 50 goal man (one year he got 50 goals in 49 games...let's see OV do that!) plus his hits were legendary. That's why they think Lucic is the second coming of Neely (although Lucic will probably be a 25 goal man, not 50). Most importantly, those guys didn't prey on smaller players, they didn't selfishly put themselves out of position to hit, the didn't jump, the didn't take out knees, they didn't wear visors and, oh yeah, they backed their sh-t up...THEY FOUGHT TOO!

@Johnny B.....the three stars of a match are the three best players as chosen by a third party, with the first star considered the best player, akin to the man of the match in other sports. Usually, the top point scorers or outstanding goaltenders are designated the three stars, but other players may be considered by affecting the game by other means (eg. consistent physical play, many steals, blocked shots, etc.).
... Maybe fedetenko got the star for affecting the game via other means.... just a thought on my behalf hehe, I couldnt find who the third party actually was that chose the stars for the game, but i am still looking ......

@beywolfe1 - he's single handedly responsible for igniting the washington area. even when we went to the stanley cup finals there were more wings fans at our home games. he still has a long way to go. crosby has a much better understanding of tempo and patience. ovechkin knows he can makes things happen and pushes too hard frequently. guerins goal last night is the best example - crosby could've forced a pass across the ice but settled, saw a trailing guerin who was in the clear and passed it back - result : goal. i don't think i'll ever like crosby, but i really enjoyed watching him play. then again, i couldn't stand fedorov, until he put on our red sweater. backstroms development is more crucial for the caps future than ovechkins play as odd as that may sound.

@ Jackaroe........point taken on ov being a winger. I stand corrected. And I will say this about OV....I have never seen a top scorer in the NHL (Lemiu; Yager; Crosby etc) that ever hit the way OV does. That is impressive. Unfortunately he now has the time to recoup from those hits.
