Salo’s late goal lifts Canucks in Game 1

  • Print

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)—The blood was still oozing out of five stitches above Kyle Wellwood’s left eye and a fat lower lip, and yet the Canucks forward couldn’t stop smiling.

Wellwood had two assists, drew five power plays, lost one tooth and chipped another, but his biggest play in Vancouver’s 5-3 series-opening victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night didn’t show up on the score sheet.

Wellwood made the pass that started a 4-on-1 rush, and defenseman Sami Salo finished the play by banging in a rebound with 1:13 remaining, putting the Canucks back ahead after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period.

Ryan Johnson scored into an empty net with 15.5 seconds left to secure the Game 1 win.

“It’s definitely not fun to have these marks on your face, but in the playoffs it feels all right,” Wellwood said. “These aren’t something you worry about too much, they get you attention more than anything.”

After rallying with two goals by Patrick Kane and a tying marker from David Bolland with 5:29 left, the Blackhawks coughed up the puck on a late 4-on-2 rush of their own. Wellwood jumped on it and fed ahead to Mason Raymond, who sent a cross-ice pass to Steve Bernier for a one-timer that was stopped by a sliding Nikolai Khabibulin, leaving Salo alone to hammer in the rebound. Wellwood was especially happy to see the puck go in after turning the puck over for Chicago’s 4-on-2.

“When I got it back I just threw it to Mase and me and Sami somehow were ahead of all their guys, too, so we just started heading toward the net and Sami put it in,” said Wellwood, who was hit near the eye by Andrew Ladd’s stick in the first period and in the mouth by Kane’s in the second.

Pavol Demitra scored on a power play, and Henrik Sedin and Ryan Kesler added even-strength goals for Vancouver, 16-1-1 at home since February. Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal series is Saturday night in Vancouver.

After Chicago rallied twice from three-goal deficits in its six-game victory over Calgary, Kane got the Blackhawks’ rally started 1:01 into the third, pouncing on a loose puck in the slot and roofing a quick shot over Roberto Luongo’s shoulder. Kane cut it one on a power-play rebound of Brent Seabrook’s point shot, and Bolland tied it on another rebound off a long Duncan Keith shot.

“We had a great third period to start off. One mistake and it ends up in the back of your net,” Kane said. “It’s not going to be as easy as Calgary. They’re a faster-paced team and we’ve got to keep up with them.

Khabibulin made 22 saves, including three great ones to keep it close early in the third period. He hasn’t beaten the Canucks since Jan. 26, 1998, with Phoenix, and didn’t talk after the game, leaving teammates to answer for him.

“He makes a great stop (on Bernier) but when you’ve got four guys going to the net and one guy defending, it’s tough to keep that one out,” Seabrook said about the winning goal. “We’ve got to be focused every time we’re on the ice.”

Nine days after sweeping St. Louis, Luongo made the best of his 28 saves five minutes into the game, robbing Martin Halva alone in front of the net.

The Canucks’ power play, however, looked rusty early, failing to record a shot after Ladd got a 4-minute penalty for cutting Wellwood. But on the next shift, Wellwood walked around Keith to draw a hooking penalty, and Demitra opened the scoring after a nice passing play started by Wellwood.

Henrik Sedin doubled the lead 5 minutes into the second, and Kesler made it 3-0 with 5 minutes left in the period, banging Wellwood’s pass from behind the net.

“Kyle was our best player on the ice,” Canucks coach Allan Vigneault said about the baby-faced Wellwood. “At least now he looks like a hockey player.”

Notes

Vigneault compared Chicago LW Ben Eager’s elbow to the head of Rick Rypien, which earned a roughing penalty, to the hit that earned Washington’s Donald Brashear a six-game suspension in the first round, and said the league was looking at it. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews and D Matt Walker both played after missing practice Wednesday, but Toews played less than 14 minutes, was minus-2 and lost eight of 11 faceoffs.

I read a lot of the Vancouver articles and the overall theme was they also need to play 60 minutes. The third period was all Hawks, because Vancouver was sitting back a little too much. Both teams didn't even play their best games. And after playing the Blues (which for whatever reason because they had a great second half people think they are as good as the Hawks) and only allowing 2 goals at most the Canuks cough up three in one period against a better Hawks team. You go on and find me another team with 14 players under 25 that score three third period goals on the road against a world class goalie, It doesn't happen so I will take that as a positive. And a lot of the penalties WERE stupid. High sticking was just ridiculous by the Hawks, but a few of the minor penalties could have gone either way. And one more thing, Bill McCreary is an idiot and needs to let the play go a little longer. He killed momentum by both teams with quick whistles when the puck was clearly not in possession of the goalies. He did it numerous times, terrible.

Most of the Canuk local papers said they home team needs to play 60 minutes and they were lucky to escape overtime. The Third period was all Hawks, I think Vancouver sat back a little too much. Not really sure what you are talking about. Both teams didn't even play their best game. And seriously some of the fans of both teams in this discussion are morons, but hey aren't we used to that yet? Gotta love the internet.

Hawks fans can rant all they like and blame their loss on anything but their team but they still lost the game in the end and did not play well and earned all the "stupid" penalties they took. Maybe they'll learn to be a bit more fair minded when the see the replays and read how well the Canuks played in their local papers. Better yet watch the game with an open mind if you can even manage that without being so petty and biased yourselves. There are no "hometown refs" in the NHL and any hockey fan knows that. I sure do after over 60 years of being a Bruins fan.

I think most people need to stop and think for a moment before posting that teams in the playoffs suck. If they sucked, they wouldn't be in the playoffs in the first place. That said, Chicago is definitely a good team, there's no denying that. This is going to be a close series, and its hard to say which team is going to win it. Really, people can sit here and say a team has this and that and because of those reasons their team will win, but the fact is, anything can happen and you just have to take it from game to game. Chicago has their strengths, Vancouver has theirs. It's just a matter of which team utilizes those strengths the best.

Bad penalties are uncharacteristic of this team that won't happen again. And it's a little tough to sustain any offense when your killing them off. On a positive, the penalty kill was good and they showed that they won't quit. A bad play by Barker cost them the game. No way do I see sweep in this series, it was one game. Vancouver is a very good team, but the Hawks aren't the crappy team some of you ignorant posters seem to think.

@Gerald. You obviously just looked at the stats. Most of the Flames shots were from the perimeter with NO ONE in front of the net. Hawks buried there chances and moved on. Past History. As for the comments about them playing bad in big games, last time I checked the Blues were the ones that got swept, and the Hawks finished their series. Any more stupid comments by the ignorant?

Well when a team gets 7 power plays (dumb penalties by the Hawks) and only score once that is a little troubling. You won't see that again and that pretty much put the Hawks on their heels for the two periods it happened in. Overall it was a fun game to watch, they showed they can come back but a bad play by Barker cost them the game. It was closer then some of you Nucks fans like to think, you were getting out shot with an advantage of 5 or 6 power plays more through the first two periods.

And St. Louis would have never scored three goals in the third against you, like you proved in the previous series. don't even try to compare Chicago with St. Louis, there is none.

Hometown officials helped the stupid Canucks win game 1. Honestly, the penalty minutes against Chicago were pathetic and for the mostpart completely uncalled for. It's no wonder people don't like Canadian teams... their fans are horrible, classless and know-it-alls. Congrats on having game one handed to you. I hope that you enjoyed having a playoff win served up to you on a platter. Enjoy watching the youngest team in the NHL win the next four and take this series 4-1.

Hawks Fan: Your smack talk is weaker than Bolland trying to trash talk Bieksa from the safety of the Hawks bench. You can have all the moral victories that you want, but your predictions have the same hint of hopeful pleading desperation that the Blues' fans had last series. The ultimate comeback is to simply have you look at the scoreboard. Feel free to talk smack after your team actually wins a game in this series...

Either way, I have to agree that each team has a lot going for it and each seems well-balanced as you said. I fully expect a see-saw battle throughout. Can't wait for tomorrow. GO 'NUCKS.

    Hawk fans are dumb?

Canucks brass are the idiots who made Salo 1st star when Wellwood(who Canuck fans tried to drive outta town in the fall) was the only reason Vancouver won.

Kudos to the hawks for playing run an d gun hockeym (although you need to ease off after you've caught them)

Fushheads to the Moron Canuck fans who are classless in acting like they won the cup.

Hint... act like you've been there not like Silvertip inbreds

Yeah you hit the nail right on the head us Hawk fans are dumb, I read all these posts "this team sucks", " that team won't make it past this many games" is there someone on here that has actually played hockey past pee-wees and KNOWS something about the players and the game itself. Listen, nobody on this fricken planet knows whose gonna win the series, holy crap the Ducks just kicked the crap out of one of the TOP teams, who seen that comin? If anyone here knows anything about the playoffs it all comes down to who wants it more. The Canucks and the Hawks have battled all year for respect from all the other teams in the league, I think both these teams are well balanced on all aspects of the game. I would love to read these posts and actually be able to talk with someone about some serious hockey issues that we will see in the upcoming games. Some of you type your silly crap on here and make these sports writers look like they know what there talkin about. I guess I should just be thankful there are no Redwing fans typing the same old crap. The Canucks and Hawks series will be the most exciting till we all get to watch the finals. Both these teams are hungry for the cup and some respect. GO HAWKS.

It's amaizing to me that these canucks fans are talking so much trash. The only reason they didn't get beat by the hawks in the first round was because Calgary decided to take some time off at the end of the year. I watched the entire game last night, and the hawks looked beat most of the time, much like game 1 vs Calgary. The big reasons they lost this game is because the refs called bs penallies in the 1st period till Vancouver got a goal, and Salo's goal was nothing more than dumb luck. I hope that they can beat Vancouver, but its going to be tough.

Man hawks fan's are so dumb... but that's OK you just started watching hockey this year.

This series won't take longer than 5 games and it won't be the hawks on top. Vancouer (one of the best teams in the last part of the season when games got tough to win) beat St. Louis (also one of the best teams in the last part of the season when games got tough to win) in 4 games. St. Louis might not look good on paper but they have heart and did what it took to win games when games got tough to win. Chicago (average when games got tough to win) took 6 games vs Calgary (incredibly terrible when games got tough to win, they were horrible). Sorry hawks fans but you are not as good as even St. Louis.

This series is probably over in 4 but I'll give you maybe 1 win in your home rink. Canucks in 5 easy.

@ Hawks Fan... You are an undereducated bandwagon jumper sir. You know nothing about the game, because if you did, you would have seen that the Canucks dominated that game besides 10 minutes in the third period. Furthermore, you know nothing about our 'depressing' province, because if you did, you would know that we are the most beautiful province, with the most gorgeous women, and the best hockey team in Canada. So its hard to be depressing when you have so many inspiring things surrounding you. Think about things before you open your yapper.

Hawks fan, you've got to take a step back and look at yourself... You're implying that by being one quarter of the way to a hawks sweep, the Canucks somehow 'lost'. I think the Canucks learned an important lesson, not to let up, and it will never happen again. The hawks on the other hand tried and tried and could NEVER keep up with the Canucks. There were no lessons to be learned by Chicago there, other than 'we can't beat these guys, they're too fast and hard working'.

    Case Closed.
