White-Wash: Caps get back in series with 4-0 win

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Ovechkin proved that the Washington Capitals still have plenty of playoff life even though he’s still searching for his first postseason goal.

Ovechkin did plenty Monday night without finding the back of the net, and the Capitals knocked back the upstart New York Rangers with a solid 4-0 victory. Washington rebounded from a pair of frustrating home losses, got to goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and cut its series deficit to 2-1.

“It was an important game, but it’s over,” said Ovechkin, who led the NHL with 56 regular-season goals. “It’s done. It’s history. And we have to battle next game.”

Ovechkin went a third game without a goal, but earned two assists for the second-seeded Capitals, who dominated the No. 7 Rangers.

Behind 33 saves from 20-year-old Simeon Varlamov, the Capitals moved into position to tie the Eastern Conference matchup Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

“We had some lucky goals,” said Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin’s linemate who had three assists. “It’s just one game. We have to regroup and come back Wednesday.

“We worked harder and we had to fight for our lives.”

Despite playing only six career NHL games, Varlamov made a surprise start in Game 2 after Jose Theodore was ineffective in the opener. He was the hard-luck loser in New York’s 1-0 victory and earned the nod again. Varlamov, 4-0-1 in the regular season, made coach Bruce Boudreau’s decision look brilliant with the help of Washington’s potent attack.

“He’s played in the finals of the Russian elite league, which to him is probably like our Stanley Cup,” Boudreau said. “He’s played in the world championship, and the fact that he doesn’t understand a word we’re saying probably really helps him.”

After being held to three goals in two games, one at even strength, the Capitals showed how they ranked third in the NHL in scoring during the regular season.

Ovechkin cut down on his shooting after recording 19 shots in the first two games and having another 17 attempts blocked, and showed off his passing skills. He earned assists on Alexander Semin’s two goals in the first period and was on the ice when Brooks Laich added a power-play tally in the second.

Former Rangers defenseman Tom Poti also scored a power-play goal with 1:25 left.

Ovechkin recorded five shots and was everywhere, even chasing down Lauri Korpikoski on a short-handed breakaway. At the end of a shift, Ovechkin dived from behind and deftly knocked the puck off Korpikoski’s stick.

“You see the effort that he’s putting in,” Boudreau said. “It was a tremendous leadership play, and that’s why he is who he is.”

It was a fine ending to Ovechkin’s day after he was shooed away from the Capitals bench in the morning when he took a seat to watch the Rangers practice. He joked that New York was afraid of him, and then gave the Rangers reason to be.

Ovechkin took the Rangers apart with the pass. He earned the second assist on Semin’s first goal and made the final pass in front to set up Semin’s second of the night and third straight for the Capitals in the series.

New York coach John Tortorella cautioned that the Rangers won the first two games despite not having the puck enough. That trend continued in the opening period, and they paid for it.

“They played very well defensively and I thought we stunk defensively,” Tortorella said. “That was the key to the game. They defended very well in front of their net and we were chasing our tail all night long—spinning and watching the puck.”

Backstrom, Semin’s new linemate, found him with a cross-ice pass into the lower right circle for a shot that made it 1-0 at 6:57. Semin snapped the Capitals’ scoreless drought at 85 minutes, 15 seconds—dating to his early third-period goal in Game 1.

The Rangers nearly tied it when Markus Naslund’s shot from the right circle was stopped by Varlamov, and the rebound came to Ryan Callahan on the other side, but his drive at the open side hit the left post with 8:38 left.

Washington raced the other way, as the crowd groaned at the missed chance to tie. Backstrom sent a pass from the left-wing boards to Ovechkin at the goal line. He spotted Semin in front for a quick redirect that made it 2-0 just 14 seconds after Callahan’s miss.

“It definitely changed the momentum,” Callahan said. “At the same time, the game is not over in the first period. We had to be better after that.”

Lundqvist made 36 saves and did all he could to keep the Caps at bay, kicking out his legs, sprawling on his stomach and back and diving post to post. His best stop came when he denied Tomas Fleischmann’s mini breakaway, making the save as he fell forward with 12:21 left in the second.

“It felt like they had a little more power out there,” Lundqvist said. “We had two great games on the road, but we knew it would be tougher to win this one.”

Washington pushed the lead to 3-0 with 8:31 remaining in the second when Laich cleaned up a loose puck at the right post after Semin bounced a shot off Lundqvist’s pads.

Notes

The Capitals had lost Game 3 the four previous times they trailed 2-0. They are 11-19 overall in Game 3s. … The Rangers have dropped three straight Game 3s and are 32-43 overall.

okay very strange that ovechkin was allowed to come out to even be there .isnt there security at garden or any thing to prevent this . but even if he did see something they still got to stop . would be a little easier. but the stars did show up for this one . like we all knew they would . and lets say ovechkin had great game on the offense and defense . he usually is just about the offense but his two way game .was unmatched by any player on the ice . and avery is a rebel .but last night that was so un called for push the goltender. .i am sure coach gave them an ear full ..next game will be intresting

That was not the same Ranger team that won both games in Washington - They went back to the old theory .." Lets rely on Lundqvist way too much" If it wasn't for Henrik that game would have been 8-0.

They need to get the spark going again or this could be ugly for Rangers fans.

Ovechkin can only win after cheating and acting like a cheap, whiny loser by sitting in on the Rangers practice. Notice that the Caps improved (and won) after he was told to pass the puck to other players instead of hogging it and trying to be a one man show (his usual mode of operation).

when the rangers failed to tie it at 1 and the caps took a quick 2-0 lead that was the turning point. the refs jus made sure that only 1 period of hockey was necessary for the caps to play.

Ranger fans actually think they have a right to be ignorant because they are from NY. I actually married a girl from NY. After seven years she ran off with a biker friend of mine... God I love it when a plan works out. Best thing that ever happened to me was her going bye bye.

    NY sucks...
Unless you make a 6 digit salary you deal with...
    City services that suck....
    Prices that way suck...
A fan base that has an understanding factor of .015%...
The most uneducated (sport wise) people I have ever met....
ok, time to back up.... Washington as a city sucks too....
    But not the people...

    you see?...
That's the difference. We in DC have a government that really sucks with a lot of great people...
NY has a great government with a lot of citizens that suck!

    lol, I'm out of here.

javbal - are you kidding? did you not see Avery hit Varlamov in the head as the ref was ushering him off the ice?

Can you imagine Avery taking a swipe at Billy Smith? I wish somebody would find Billy and just ask him what he thinks of Avery. I'm with Slugger, take a poke at my goalie and you'll answer for it "on the ice or in the parking lot" as they said in the 70s. Ranger dorks, isn't that even the tiniest bit humiliating to have one of your players constantly trying to start crap with the opposing GOALIE? When he's working a shutout with 2 minutes left? Oh, and it's real class to throw stuff on the ice, as well.

ahhhhhhhh javbal.....a 1 way hockey fan....actually any HOCKEY fan saw that those calls were right on! If anything the 3 straight calls against the Capitals were ticky tack calls. But we could argue bad calls all night. Admit it, you got your ass kicked and its as simple as that! But you cry baby Ranger fans did make an effort to call the game for the refs...just like you always do. I've never seen an arena boo the refs like MSG fans. What friggin cry babies. Man up and take the whomping and sit Avery out next game. He single handedly caused you this game. He needs to get his ass stomped a couple of times because the refs let him get away with way too much. If he stood in my goalie's crease yelling at my goalie I'd crack him across the side of his head with my stick....then he would learn a thing or two about hockey ettiquette! But you Ranger fans should keep crying in game 4....its the only chance you have. Unfortunately the referees listen to your whinning too often just like game 3 when the fans cried/booed/hissed/ and got a call for your effort....it was clearly a no call! Like I said..the only chance you have is if the referees will give you enough poor calls and 8 - 10 power plays....ONLY CHANCE!

Robsinchak: By wishing for any player to get injured you have proved without a doubt that you are a sick somebody.

The first two games were a wake up call for the young Caps. And guess what, they be awake now….
Game one and two were one-goal games handed to the Rangers by the referees. So many non-calls on obvious infractions by the Rangers along with cheap calls against the Caps.
Game three was not even close as the young Caps got their games on the way they like to play.
By the way, Avery was a joke last night and made it easy for the Caps to take advantage of his bull. And I think the Refs are tired of his crap also.

    Lets Go Caps!!!

You sharks fans should be ashamed, I found this on the sharks website in thier chatroom along with a bunch of other comments from supposed "sharks fans". Stick with your team win or lose. When I first started watching the wings as a young lad, they were horrible butoh how i loved the fights, when they weren't on tv i listened to them on the radio sitting on my grandpa's living room floor cheering for them. Redwings for Life!!

San Jose (Reuters) – A 12-year old boy is being hailed as a hero for his actions in a San Jose restaurant yesterday afternoon.
The boy was dining with his parents at the up-scale ‘Loft Bar & Bistro’ on Second St., when a man began to choke on a piece of steak he was eating. The man’s face began to turn red as he pointed frantically at his hockey jersey.
Luckily for the man, 12-year old Steven Cooper knew what to do.
“I saw the man point to his Sharks jersey” recalled Steven. “I knew from past years that around late April anyone wearing a San Jose Sharks jersey is prone to choking, so I suspected he was in trouble.”
The boy proceeded to run across the restaurant and administer the Heimlich maneuver.
“That boy saved my life.” Said the man, wishing not to be identified. “This Sharks jersey is better than a giant sign that says ‘help me I am choking in late April.’”.
Several Sharks players, who were getting a pre-game drink, witnessed the event. Patrick Marleau, the Sharks captain, had a front row seat for the heroism.
“This kid came from nowhere, what a hero.” Marleau stated. “I wish I could prevent choking like that,” He added.
Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabakov was also in attendance.
“That child, so brave!” Said the goalie as he mishandled his butter knife, dropping a dinner roll that hit the ground and rolled slowly between his feet as he attempted to stop it. “Darn, that always happens to me”.
Cooper’s parents said they raised the boy as a Sharks fan, and that may have been the best decision they ever made. “Only a boy used to so much choking would have been able to save that man, and little Stevie has been around choking his entire life.”

Why do people insist on raving over a complete fake like ovetchkin? The caps will accept the usual annual beat down and ovi can shine up his golf clubs and tuck each one in his five hole. What a stupid moron this clown is. In 2 years he will be a memory. I guess every show needs its clown. Too bad he can never be a decent human like everyones hero Sid :) Have fun rooting for your natties caps fans. Just another under acheiving team . Mabye Dan Snyder can save this one too like he did your redskins.

Its too bad a few of those objects didnt hit any of the refs. Not that the rangers deserved to win this game casue they played downright lousy and someone needs to teach them how to backcheck and take responsibility for their man, but as usual the refs didnt exatly help. That string of 3 MISERABLE calls in a row in the 3rd period kinda disallowed any and all attempts by the rangers to get back into the game. Drury barely touched his man and got a hook, Callahan had a clean hit and for some reason was given a high stick, and AS USUAL Avery breathes on the goalie and the first response is to give him a penalty. Whatever, game 4 is wed night! Lets go rangers!!
