Bruins’ Ryder gets revenge against Habs

  • Print

MONTREAL (AP)—Michael Ryder put his past behind him and the Boston Bruins one win from their first playoff series win in 10 years.

Ryder scored late in the second period against his former team and Tim Thomas made 23 saves to lead Boston to a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.

Phil Kessel, Shawn Thornton, Chuck Kobasew also scored for Boston, which increased its lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal to 3-0 despite the absence of left wing Milan Lucic, who sat out a one-game league suspension.

Ryder, a healthy scratch for all but four of Montreal’s 12 playoffs games last season, put Boston ahead 17:21 into the second period.

“I’d forgotten about last year. I don’t really think about it,” said Ryder, who signed a three-year, $12-million free agent contract with Boston. “It feels like I’ve been here for so long now, actually, and the guys are great and they’ve welcomed me in and it’s good just to be a part of the team. We’re rolling good right now.”

The former Canadiens left wing jumped on a rebound of Dennis Wideman’s shot from the right point and beat Carey Price with a shot into an open left side.

“I’m sure everybody would like to hear the word ‘justice’, but that’s not for me to say,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien, who was himself relieved of his duties behind the Canadiens’ bench midway through the 2005-06 season by Montreal GM—and current head coach—Bob Gainey.

“I think we’re just kind of happy we were able to sign him,” Julien said of Ryder, “and he’s played a big role for us this year.”

Kobasew scored into an empty net with 37 seconds remaining.

Chris Higgins and Yannick Weber scored for Montreal, which has lost seven in a row, including its last four games of the regular season.

“At this point, there’s not too much positive there,” Canadiens Saku Koivu said. “Every game, there are things you try to build on but what we’re doing right now is not enough. We have to find a way to get the goals. It doesn’t matter how you do it, to get the win.”

Price, pulled Saturday after allowing five goals through the first two periods, made 26 saves in his third straight start.

The Bruins, who haven’t won a playoff series since 1999, are poised to beat the Canadiens for only the eighth time in 32 playoff matchups between the longtime rivals.

Game 4 is Wednesday night at the Bell Centre.

Lucic was suspended Monday by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell after he was assessed a match penalty for cross-checking Montreal’s Maxim Lapierre late in Saturday’s 5-1 win in Boston.

Left wing Alex Tanguay and defenseman Mathieu Schneider were both injured and unable to play for Montreal. The Canadiens, already without injured top defenseman Andrei Markov, announced moments after the opening faceoff that both key players were sidelined by upper-body injuries.

“I didn’t even know they weren’t playing until pretty close to warmups,” Higgins said. “To miss those guys, that’s a lot of skill that you’ve got to replace.”

Weber, who made his playoff debut Saturday, remained in the lineup and collected two points, including an assist as Higgins gave the Canadiens’ their first lead of the series when he opened the scoring with his second goal 11:52 in.

Buoyed by a sold-out Bell Centre crowd of 21,273, Montreal pressed hard in the opening period, creating a number of scoring chances that drew the fans out of their seats.

“We liked the way we came out,” Canadiens right wing Tom Kostopoulos said. “The crowd was a huge part of the first period.”

Montreal’s 1-0 advantage lasted all of 6:43, though, erased when Kessel scored his third goal at 18:35, allowing the Bruins to head off to their dressing room with a 1-1 draw through the first 20 minutes.

Thornton, who scored six goals in 79 games during the regular season, gave Boston a 2-1 lead when he scored 3:36 into the second.

Thornton recorded his first point in 25 playoff games overall when he beat Price from the left side of the slot with a shot inside the left post after taking a setup pass from behind the net by Byron Bitz, who took Lucic’s spot in the lineup and made his playoff debut.

“Any time I score, I’m excited because I’m not getting 50 a year, that’s for sure,” Thornton said. “My linemates did an unbelievable job. I threw it on net and it was lucky enough to go in for me, but Bitzy did a great job hanging onto that puck and making a good play. Any time we can chip in, it’s a plus.”

Weber tied it at 2 with his first playoff goal at 5:16.

Notes

Thornton won a Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007, playing 15 games without recording a point for the Ducks. He has appeared in 10 playoff games with the Bruins. … Canadiens D Ryan O’Byrne dressed for the first time in the series, and LW Gregory Stewart made his playoff debut. … Weber had one assist in three regular-season games.

hey Jake, the attendance issue with bruins fans in the previous years was a message to the owner, we have some if not the most loyal fans in hockey who were sick and tired of the owner holding on to every penny while tickets and concessions kept going up and guess what, IT WORKED he finally started spending some money and lowered some prices and the fans ALL came back and with the 3 other boston teams putting out superior products and winning championships I really don't think they had a choice so kudos to the bruins fans for taking a stand and getting a better product

There's on thing that strikes me as odd, on the one hand you have the Montreal fans booing the American anthem, but.....aren't they the ones that want to separate from the rest of Canada and have their own little fantasy country where they all live happily ever after and speak french and eat frogs?....
i believe the REST of Canada and its provinces should be up in arms about how hypocritical these Douchebaggs are, boy did anyone notice how loud and proudly they were singing that Canadian national anthem or is it just me. So ...not only are these MontrealCanadian fans douchy, but now theyre hypocritical....disgusting, oh one more thing

    THE PRICE IS WRONG @#$%ES!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a Canadian I was extremely disappointed when I heard the Montreal fans boo the American national anthem. It was very disrespectful and I was happy to hear Higgins after the game express his disappointment in the fans. This happens to much in hockey, I recall the Lightning doing the same thing when they faced the Flames in the 2004 final. The Calgary flames in turn cheered the American anthem extra loud the following game to show how classes the act was by the Lightning fans. I'd hope the Boston fans would the do same, though they will not likely get the chance (SWEEP). Booing a national anthem is just disrespectful to that country and should not be used to show hate towards the opposite team. Very classes Montreal...

I am a Bruins Season ticket holder, and I hate the Habs - always have. But even I get peaved when fans around me sit for the Canadien anthem, or talk and move about when it's being played. I do this out of respect for the players - who are mostly Canadian- but also for the Canadian men and women that fought side by side with American forces over the years. I learned this from my late father, who served in WWII.

I hate it when the B's fans start a "USA" chant whenever we play Montreal. It never made any sense, again because most of the Bruins players aren't American.

There's heckling, and there's booing, but last night - man that takes the cake. But you need to understand one thing: These particular fans up north are not Candians, they're citizens of the republic of Montreal. They are a different breed. What happened last night would never have happened in say Calgary, or Vancouver. I've been to Montreal dozens of times, as a fan, and on business. Let me tell you - these people s**k.

I for one will still stand for the Candian national anthem, and I'll encourage those around me to show the same respect. Why would I stoop so low as to imitate a bunch of frogs?

They're just pissed becuase it's going to be an early summer for them, and all they have is the Candiens. (and some really good strip clubs.)

DISGUSTING!!! Thats the only word, well that I can at least put in here, that describes those toothless wonders up north!! How disgraceful, booing ANYONES National anthem is just plain ignorance. Just goes to show you the fans have the same mentality as the cheapshot players. Just feel like someone from the NHL shoud at least comment on the disrespect of those fans. Poor little babies!!!

The Canadians fans are sore losers and have no right to ever make comments about Americans being classless......I never have heard a Bruins fan boo the Canadian national anthem......I can't wait to see the B's finish the cheap shot artists that won't drop the gloves unless it is to fight of all players.... Bergeron. Oh, and how did that fight go.....with a Montreal player laying on the ice face down, from a left hook. Hate to tell you Habs fans but the right hook is coming on Wednesday. So say good night!

Bruins are a much better team than Montreal this year bottom line. Not the case in last year's playoffs, but certainly the case here. As much as I would love to see the sweep completed in Montreal, bringing it back to Boston for game 5 and winning would be just as sweet. Habs fans are spineless jellyfish who boo the national anthem because they have nothing else. I was at Game 1 in Boston and the fans respected the Canadien anthem. See you olayter Habs, Carey Price is playing some good hockey, eh?

Man, I do love a good rivalry! Ok, bottom line, Boston is playing great hockey right now, and Montreal isnt. The Habs had plenty of chances last night, because I thought Boston got a little sloppy in the second period, but they still couldnt do it. I dont want to hear any of this "their best players are hurt crap" either, because thats why you have depth on your bench. Boston has been without their top guys throughout the season and still found a way to win. Guys like Bitz and Hunwick came up from Providence and started contributing the first game they played. Young guys like Wheeler and Krejci (spelled that wrong), stepped up big, even the fourth line, with Thornton and Yelle, putting points on the board, they all put Boston where they are right now. That takes a lot of pressure off guys like Kessel, Savard, Lucic and Ryder. Knowing you have two of the top goalies in the game makes the defense play a lot better too.
After last nights reaction from the fans in Montreal, I hope the Bruins beat the Habs.....bad. The best hockey fans reside in Boston, at least we showed a little respect for Canada. Get the brooms out!

For the record, Blues fans were booing the Canadian national anthem, arrogance has no boundaries. Try not to stereotype all people within a country because a few wannabe French are disappointed with their overrated team.

Bruins should win East unless NJ and Brodeur do something special.

@ Ray L the back to back wins Boston had vs the Pens were back in January when Pitt was not playing for then coach Therrien. The B's lost the last game 6-4 (2-2 overall vs Pitt) in March as the Pens now have Dan Bylsma at the helm who has turned this team around 360. Regardless of who the Bruins play next round they will have their hands full, against a team with more heart, better goal tending then Price and a lineup more complete with their top players. Kudos to the Briuns but if the Habs had a healthy Markov, Schneider, Tanguay, Lang and even Franky B. this series would have been close like last year. Nice to see Ryder scoring again, :) he couldn't hit a soccer net last year. And to the losers slamming Canada, look at the make up of every NHL roster and consider your own bad apples in Bean town: most Habs fans and Canadians do respect the US and the Star Stripes and Banner.

I agree Lucic was stupid, but it wasn't dirty. Avery is a disgusting human being, so cheap, so dirty. I don't see Lucic ever going after a goalie, to compare the two is just ridiculous.

No need to rehash the Lucic incident the game suspension is over and the Habs still didn't win, however comparing Avery and Lucic??? Lucic is a kid he's only done a couple of stupid things (not that I think defending yourself from the third man in is stupid and by the way look at the tape a case could be made for Schnieder on a Butt end to to start itor at least a stick to the head with "intent") Avery plays that way most of the time!!! We'll see if Colin lives up to his memo about sending messages when the outcome of the game is not in doubt. Lucic doesn't play the Habs come out hit everything in sight and then stop hitting once they go up a goal as Jack Edwards (like him or not) would say "don;t take your foot off the snake it will bite you", the Habs let up everytime they get tied or go behind. Gainey has alot of work to do providing he still has a job when tis is over.
