Power play boosts Canucks past Blues 3-2

  • Print

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Roberto Luongo carried the Vancouver Canucks for two games. Their special teams helped them take a 3-0 series lead against the St. Louis Blues.

The Canucks scored three power-play goals, including Steve Bernier’s go-ahead score early in the third period, while again stifling the Blues’ chances with the man advantage in a 3-2 victory Sunday night.

“It was a huge difference,” Luongo said. “We got some big goals and we killed some big ones off.”

Vancouver, the third seed in the Western Conference, silenced a standing-room crowd of 19,500 for the Blues’ first home playoff game in five seasons. The Canucks can finish off the sixth-seeded Blues in Game 4 on Tuesday night in St. Louis, but were far from cocky about the possibility of a sweep.

“It’s 3-0 and I think we still have to get to four,” Luongo said. “So we’ve got a big one left to win and by no means are we going to think it’s over.

“Those guys are not going to quit and we’ve got to make sure we bear down.”

Coach Alain Vigneault said the Canucks got to this point by turning the other cheek instead of retaliating.

“Our guys have been taking a lot of cheap shots so far during this series,” Vigneault said. “To respond with three goals on the power play is pretty satisfying.”

Andy McDonald, frequently frustrated by Luongo the first two games, finally broke through to tie it at 2 in the second period for the Blues, and added an assist. But St. Louis was shut out on six power plays, especially squandering early chances to seize control, and is 1-for-17 in the series.

“We look tight and nervous on the power play,” coach Andy Murray said. “We’ve had over 5 minutes of 5-on-3 in this series and really have not been the threat that we want to be. We probably had four or five good chances on the 5-on-3, but that’s not good enough against this goaltender.”

Mattias Ohlund and Daniel Sedin also scored power-play goals for the Canucks, who were strong the last two periods after mustering five shots and trailing 1-0 after the first. And Luongo, who allowed one goal on 56 shots the first two games, made 24 saves and was good enough even if he wasn’t the star that prompted a fans’ “LuonGO Home” sign.

The go-ahead goal was a bit of a fluke, keyed by Sami Salo’s wide shot from the point that took a lively bounce off the end boards and right to Henrik Sedin, who redirected the puck to Bernier alone in front of the net for an easy tap-in at 41 seconds of the third. Bernier scored his second career playoff goal in 26 games.

“I just had to put it in,” Bernier said. “A great feeling. It was nice execution by everybody.”

The Blues’ B.J. Crombeen was whistled for roughing at the end of the second period after charging into a scrum, putting his team at a disadvantage when play resumed.

“It’s my own stupidity that put us down and ended up costing us the game,” Crombeen said. “I didn’t control my emotions enough.”

The Canucks also capitalized on the Blues’ lack of discipline at the start of the second period, scoring a pair of power-play goals in a span of 2:25 to take their first lead.

Murray used his timeout after Ohlund’s shot from the right point squirted between Chris Mason’s pads at 7:53. But Jay McClement was whistled for holding the stick about a half-minute later, his second straight trip to the penalty box, and Daniel Sedin poked in the go-ahead goal just before a flailing Mason could glove the puck at 10:18.

The Blues were outshot 11-3 the first 12-plus minutes of the period before rallying on McDonald’s tying goal at 16:13. McDonald banged three shots off the goal post or crossbar in the Canucks’ 3-0 Game 2 victory, also Luongo’s first career playoff shutout, before finally beating the goalie off a blistering cross-ice feed from David Perron to tie it at 16:13.

David Backes’ first goal in six games gave the Blues their first lead of the series. McDonald got the puck in deep after passing off the boards to himself, and Backes scored off Brad Boyes’ feed from behind the net at 3:11 of the first.

St. Louis missed many more chances, though, totaling just three shots in 6:34 of power play time while rarely getting a chance to set up shop in the offensive zone. That included 1:26 with a two-man advantage after Willie Mitchell was whistled for a double minor midway through the period.

“To get that lead, to keep the crowd energized, was huge,” Backes said. “A few other chances that we don’t throw in the back of the net, and it ends up biting us in the butt.”

Notes

Blues F Yan Stastny skated in the pregame after being recalled from Peoria (AHL) earlier in the day, but was among the scratches. … The Canucks scratched C Mats Sundin, who got the first goal in Vancouver’s 3-0 Game 2 victory but has been nursing a groin injury. Sundin practiced Saturday before the flight to St. Louis. Vigneault said Sundin’s status is “day to day” heading into Game 4. … Backes had five goals in two games earlier this month, including four against the Red Wings on April 2, but had been limited to one assist in his previous five games.

Luongo does deserve A LOT of credit for this series. As a blues fan it's very frustrating watching your team get shut down by him. I know no one expected us to go far in the playoffs but it would be nice to see more of a close match. The blues just aren't playing like they have and that's probably more frustrating than luongo. Hopefully the blues can at least win a couple before the series ends.

I agree with you Kelvin. The Canucks and Luongo deserve all the credit they get. They are on a roll and playing well. Its just disappointing when fans have to insult players, fans, and cities. Stick to praising your team while you can. Except for a few teams, all organizations go through up years and down years. I watch all the games because I'm a hockey fan. Since the Canucks and the Blues had the best two second half records, I was hoping for a better series. Regardless of who wins.

Louie deserves all the credit he is getting. Rotting away down Fl for years without any support. Now he has a team that is good enough to go all the way and some say he isnt deserving of all the praise?

    Typical fringe hockey fans!!

The Blues have a good thing going and some great young talent but bottom line they are garbage right now and will be for a while. Doesnt seem that many people outside of western Canada can give the Canucks credit, Yes they were garbage for a while and came up looking good a couple years back. Big bert @#$%ed that all up!! Now they have a good team that seems to be all in it together
    Give them a little credit.

I think that both teams have been throwing the cheap shots. I don't like how Vigneault said that his guys have been getting cheap shotted and said nothing about the nonsense of going after little Andy Mcdonlad for spraying Luongo. Push him away or whatever but that scrum was hotheaded and unnecesary and started the bad blood in this series. And I don't know what game the refs were watching but I nearly fell over after seeing Crombeen as the only one in the box to start the third period. I don't know who it was but somebody took a blue to the ice and the ref watched him continue until he was on the ground then he stepped in. Worst officiated playoff game I've ever seen!

Don't blame the the whole city of St. Louis or state of Mo. for a couple of bad apples booing the anthem. Just like we didn't blame the Canucks for their goon Bertuzzi trying to kill Steve Moore with a cheap shot. He did a good job of giving hockey a major black eye on the national scene.

The hoosiers who booed the Canadian National Anthem should stay home for game 4. Watch American Idol or Fox News or something hoosier like that. Real hockey fans respect Canada and its anthem and its citizens. if it weren't for the 30 feet of snow every year, we'd all move there. Personally, if the Canucks oust the Blues, I'm rooting for them to go all the way.

I'm sick of people saying that Kariya shouldn't return cuz of the chemistry. He's already gotten the ok from the doctor and he's waiting to play until he feels ready. If he is, put him in. A lot of people say he was a waste of money. Last year Boyes had 43 goals, and kariya had bout 37 assist on them goals. That means boyes only scored about 6 or 7 goals without him. Bring him in on a line wit Boyes and Mccdonald. Y not, we're down 3-0 in the series and you need as much playoffs experience as possible. patricknarholm your such a bum, ha. what a loser. Stay off the computer. go on and masterbate using your own tears when the nucks don't win the stanely cup.(and no I'm not saying it's goin to b cuz of the blues since every gay ass nuck fan missreads post and says things that we didn't say) You sound like ricky bobby, If you ain't number 1, your last.

Where is Vancouver, anyway? :o) Did Blues fans expect the Stanley Cup this year? No. But we're obviously going to root for our team to win no matter what. The way these two teams had been playing, I don't think anyone (Nucks fans included) truly expected a sweep, and I for one don't expect them to go down without a fight in game 4. Who knows, maybe they can steal one at home and then Demitra can return the favor by catching the flu and getting everyone on Vancouver's top 2 scoring lines sick... karma, it's not just for Earl Hickey anymore.

Sad times for us Blues fans. Instead of waiting for the perfect shot on the power play, just get the puck to the net, it might actually go in! Pull the trigger already, and SHOOT! Blues will win game 4, if for no other reason than the Canucks will want to take the series on their home ice. Congradulations. At least the Blues have some young talent for the future, thank goodness for that. It was a heck of a run for a team that faced so much adversary. Try again next year, one day we'll get there!

"The Blues have played terrible this series. Luongo is getting wayyyyy too much credit."

Ask Andy McDonald if Luongo is getting too much credit. Luongo didn't get a star tonight because he wasn't the difference, but in Game 1 and 2?

And to the gloating Canucks fans... Remember the 3-1 series lead against Minnesota that the boys blew? Please don't start bragging yet, it's bad karma.

The Vancouver Canucks are one solid team. I think this could be our year. They remind me of the annoying 90's NJ Devils, but this time I'm enjoying watching it. Vancouver has the goods this year and they're playing the way that wins cups so far.

Here's to a nice exhausting Detroit - Anaheim second round. ;-)

Luongo is gonna pull a Patrick Roy with this crew in front of him :-)

I will be honest. The Blues have played terrible this series. Luongo is getting wayyyyy too much credit. No excuses for losing so far, we have not played like the Blues. I have been a fan ever since the Barn was locked down to find me when I was three and wandered away from my dad and his friends to be found back in my seat watching the Blues hand the blackhawks their first loss of my life. We can play better and are not doing it. Any experience for these young kids is good experience. You can learn by winning, but I guarantee you learn more by losing. When your team breaks down next year by losing the Sedins in free agency to some team like Ottawa, our team is going to be building on a strong second half and show you Canucks what we can do next year. My prediction, Canucks lose in the second round and I read about how your fans never said they were potential finalists in these grand playoffs. Go Blues! We can still pull this out! (Same thing Daniel said to Henrik last night!)

The Blues were always going to have a tough time against the Canucks. Injury and such a young Blues team were always going to struggle against a more experienced Nucks team, especially when Luongo is peaking. The Sedins have also showed up to the playoffs for the first time which has made the Canucks even more dangerous.

However I wouldnt say the Nucks are going to the finals at this stage. Anything can happen just look at the Ducks and Sharks. Oh how I love playoff hockey...

If you're going to the play-offs, be ready to go all the distance, no matter what. You're so freaking happy just to get there in the first place, that doesn't make no sense what so ever. When you are in the post season, you aim to go all the way, right?????????????????? Don't give that crap about re- building and other lame stories, if that's the case, there are other teams who deserve it more the the Blues. The Blues are a bunch of hacks who made it cause other teams failed at the end, and any other team would give it it's all to advance but not the Blues according to you LLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

I had a blast bein at the game tonight even though we lost. There was so much energy and yelling. I missed that. I have to say though that there were some stupid ass calls(or none calls) by the refs. The canucks should of definitely gotten a penalty too at the end of the second for that check into the boards but they only gave one to crombeen. I know that's still not an excuse for losing. We should have capitalized on that 5 on 3 or any of our powerplays and they fell off in the 3rd. patricknarholm, no one cares bout your dumbass comment. The blues r the sh*t even if we lose. I'm proud for them that they made it this far after everything we went through. The next couple seasons r goin to be awesome and then your going to feel dumb when we make it to the finals.

LOOLOLOLOLOLOLOL that's a good message. Before and after the 1st game, the Blues was going to take the cup with no problems, according to other "blues fans". And don't you get it, Van have as much chance as any other team as of right now to make the Cup finals. I understand you say that as a comfort since the blues it totally out of it, ( like they weren't already before the series started). it's the Play-offs buddy; and we're on our way.
Ps. I know so much more hockey then you, it's not even funny.
To be realistic, I know the Red Wings going to take it all this year too.
And YES I am from Sweden, what the hell do you know about hockey, watch some wheeeenie baseball and shut the F up

There are no disillusioned Blues fans. This was a rebuilding year and happy to get playoff experience with a bunch young players despite being decimated by injuries. Neither team will be in Stanley cup finals. It is always disappointing to see no class comments by people like patricknarholm.
