Devils’ Brodeur earns 100th regular-season shutout

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—Martin Brodeur has found the New Jersey Devils have changed during his almost four-month injury absence. This is a team that not only plays defense, it scores early and often.

Brodeur earned his 100th NHL regular-season shutout with a 27-save effort, and the Devils extended their lead in the Atlantic Division with a 3-0 victory over the second-place Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

The shutout was the second in three games since Brodeur returned Thursday following recovery from elbow surgery, and this one moved him within three of tying Terry Sawchuk’s mark of 103. It was also Brodeur’s 547th career victory, moving him within four of tying Patrick Roy’s league record.

“It’s a big number, it’s kind of hard to believe,” Brodeur said of his shutout total. “You get to different numbers and at times you think, ‘OK, it’s just another one.’ When you get to a round number, it looks more impressive.”

Brodeur has been very impressive in his return, posting two shutouts and winning three times in four days. He has stopped 46 of 48 shots, and has four shutouts in 13 games this season.

“This is as good as it gets,” he said.

The potent scoring is definitely new for Brodeur, who was used to winning one-goal games in helping the Devils capture the Stanley Cup three times, the last in 2003.

New Jersey outscored Colorado, Florida and Philadelphia by a combined 14-2 margin since Brodeur returned.

“Any goalie, that’s your dream team in front of you, one that scores goals and is responsible defensively,” the four-time Vezina Trophy winner said. “I don’t think we are cutting corners in our own zone. We’ve been really disciplined in these three games and that makes a big difference in keeping the puck out of your net.”

Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Gionta and Johnny Oduya scored as the Devils won for the eighth time in 10 games to open a nine-point lead in the division with 19 games left in the regular season.

The loss was the fourth in 11 games (7-3-1) for the Flyers, who welcomed back Danny Briere to the lineup after he missed 36 games following abdominal-groin surgery. Philadelphia has played two fewer games than New Jersey.

“Not a very good one from our part,” Flyers left wing Simon Gagne said. “If you shoot 25 or 26 shots, it’s tough to win hockey games, especially against Martin Brodeur. We did not test him enough and they got the best of us.”

After Brodeur had relatively easy wins over Colorado and Florida, the Flyers had several quality chances against the 36-year-old goalie. Philadelphia captain Mike Richards had the best two.

Brodeur, who missed 50 games after having surgery to repair a torn biceps in his left elbow, protected a 1-0 lead when he slid across his crease to stop Richards in close after he was set up by Gagne.

“I was by myself with Brodeur and saw Richie on the corner on the left side. I thought it would be open net for him,” Gagne said. “I thought he read the play pretty good and Marty made a great save on that.”

Richards also had a deflection early in the third period.

Briere added a good wraparound attempt during a first-period power play. Brodeur made a couple of good stops against Scottie Upshall late in the game. Brodeur saved the shutout stopping Mike Knuble in close with 5:46 to go.

“I definitely feel more tested today than any of the other games I played so far,” Brodeur said.

As in the other two games since Brodeur returned, the Devils scored early.

Zach Parise, who had two goals in Saturday’s 7-2 win over Florida, chased down the puck in the right corner and sent a cross-ice pass to pass to Langenbrunner in the left circle. The Devils captain one-timed the first shot of the game past Martin Biron for his 20th goal of the season and the 200th of his career at 3:51.

“It’s easy to play in this league when you have the lead and you are not down right away,” Parise said.

Gionta doubled the lead 37 seconds into the second period, deflecting a point shot by Oduya for his 14th goal.

Brodeur even had a hand in the final goal that extended the Devils’ home winning streak to seven. He waved his stick over the top of his head to swat away a loose puck and that set up a quick counterattack that Oduya finished with a 35-foot shot that beat Biron, one of 44 faced by the Flyers goaltender.

Notes

The Flyers loaned D Lasse Kukkonen and F Claude Giroux to the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL) this weekend and recalled D Nate Guenin, who played in his first game of the season. … New Jersey is 3-2 vs. the Flyers. … Devils D Paul Martin was hit in the mouth by teammate John Madden’s stick in the second period and later struck in the helmet by a Flyers stick in the corner. … The Devils (41-19-3) assured themselves of a 17th straight season of .500 or better. … New Jersey is 29-0-1 when leading after two periods.

Hey so what a difference with Paul Martin back in the lineup and Clarkson and Oduya making big contributions.. Shanny seems to be finding his game... Holik is just reaking Havoc... Zubrus seemed to have a lot of jump too...

I guess it shows that the Devils have too many weapons to stop and now they have the ultimate weapon back in the Lineup....

    Marty...Marty....Marty...!!!!

Guys...Guys... Let's not get ahead of ourselves... I mean as a Devils fan it's hard not to be euphoric after the last 20 games or so but there is lots of hockey to play and there are a lot of good teams in the hunt. There is no doubt that they need to make a statement with the Caps and the Red Wings at some point...

As for Marty... he has always played great but now he has seen how the Devils can win without him and there are two excellent Goalies waiting to take his spot. Marty is more motivated now than ever before in his career because he wants to play every game and cement his legacy... Plus he wants that 4th Cup to leave no doubt..

God Bless Brodeur and the Devils and Lou and Brent down the stretch because while they have all of the elements they need for a Cup, we all no just how hard it is to get there....

Thank you Yahoo for giving Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils the publicity they finally deserve! Congrats to you Marty, its certainly good to have you back. I believe the Devils are the #1 pick this year and I look foward to watching them demolish teams in Newark during the playoffs. Rolsten, Holik, and Shanahan were clutch pick ups for us this year, now only if we can get Niedermayer back we will be GOLDEN! God bless you Marty and good luck boys, lets bring back the CUP! wooooot

The devils have a legitimate chance of going all the way this year if they can keep playing like this, Since Marty's return they have been demolishing their opponents. Its not just marty though. If anyone watched the game itself you cold see how they played like a team and blocked shots and played for the team not for each other. They dont give up. But even before his return when clemmer ands weeksie were in net they always seemed to be able to fight their way back into games. Oh and yea dont let the devils get ahead because it wont be easy to get the W. Devils are 29-0-1 when leading after 2!!!!!! Talk about solid defense.

Brodeur is the best goaltender to ever lace up the skates.
He isn't as revolutionary as some of his predecessors but his ability to combine oldschool (stand up goalie) and newschool (butterfly) as well as his phenomenal stick-handling prowess along side a very defensive oriented squad not to mention his superstar abilities will most certainly allow him to break the SO and W records he's already on the doorstep of breaking. I don't think another goalie will compile numbers of his stature in this post lockout league especially with goalie equipment monitoring (Patrick Roy's numbers are exaggerated because of his equipment and trickery) and the upcoming net changes which I think may shrink not the size of the net but the posts which will result in a bigger amount of pucks clanking off the post and into the net instead of back out away from the net.

No doubt the Devils are the East favorites, offense wins games and defense wins championships, and the Devils are stacked! Missing three future hall of famers from their blue line certainly was a set back but the Devils have certainly re-grouped and are ready to raise the cup again. See you in the finals Detroit,,,and have a repeat of the 95' sweep!!!!

to all the people who still think devils hockey is boring , trap worthy and limited to 2 goal games, take a hard look at them this year, and realize that their name will be added to lord stanleys cup yet once again....keep up the fine play guys.....your making the rest of the league look like amateurs.

I've noticed a lot of silence from the people who were declaring "Brodeur's stats are inflated because of the Devil's program" or "Just wait until they play Florida and Philly, and we'll see how good the Devils are then..."

Devils are real cup contenters. All those people who state that Lord Stanley's Cup can only be won by a Western team certainly have not been watching Devil's hockey. Bunch of haters...

too early to be saying the devils are GOING to win the cup, but if this is how the team is gonna play going into the playoffs, they are definitely the team to be from the east. I cant wait to see the next Devils-Bruins/Caps game(s). Thats gonna be the real test.
    Anyway GO DEVILS

The more I watch the Devils, the more I feel like they can really win the Cup this year. They were strong without Brodeur, but now they seem almost invincible. Granted, it's only been three games since Brodeur's return, but their defense has been looking very strong and tight. Philadelphia had great difficulty getting any clean shots through, except for a few. Their offense is scoring. They are winning games with large leads, as opposed to the typical 2-1, or 3-2 wins.
