Brunette’s shootout goal gives Wild 2-1 win
Brunette, who tied the game with a goal with 2:57 left in regulation, scored on the Wild’s fourth attempt on Sabres goalie Patrick Lalime.
Lalime stopped 18-of-19 shots and looked as though he was on his way to a shutout win until Brunette’s centering pass deflected off the stick of defenseman Jaroslav Spacek and into the net.
Jochen Hecht scored the lone goal for the Sabres.
Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom, who had 28 saves, was splendid in overtime as the Sabres outshot Minnesota 5-1 in the extra session.
Lalime, signed as a free agent over the summer and expected to start about 30 games this year as a backup to Ryan Miller, looked sharp when tested.
The puck squirted to Jason Pominville, who found Hecht unattended in the slot. Backstrom stopped his first shot but Hecht converted the rebound.
Minnesota was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Buffalo went 0-for-5.
