DENVER (AP)—Teddy Purcell scored the only shootout goal, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night in an exhibition game.

After teammates Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown missed, Purcell skated in on Jason Bacashihua from the right side before pulling the puck to the left and lifting it over the outstretched Avalanche goalie.

Darcy Tucker, Joe Sakic and Ryan Smyth all missed their shootout attempts on Jonathan Quick. Tucker and Smyth were stuffed and Sakic’s shot sailing high.

Kopitar knocked in a backhanded shot with 1:33 remaining in regulation to tie the game after Darcy Campbell’s wrister from just inside the blue line midway through the third gave the Avalanche a 3-2 lead.

Matt Moulson and Jarret Stoll also added goals for the Kings, who moved to 3-0 in preseason play.

Peter Budaj faced 22 shots, giving up one goal, in his two-period stint in net, before giving way Bacashihua.

Budaj takes over in goal this season for Jose Theodore, who bolted for Washington in the offseason.

Los Angeles goalie Erik Ersberg played the first two periods and then was relieved by Quick. Ersberg faced just 11 shots on the evening.

The Kings tied the game at 2 on a power-play goal by Moulson just 20 seconds into the third period.

Stoll scored his first goal of the preseason, corralling a loose puck near the Avalanche goal and slipping it past Budaj late in the second period. The Kings also hit the post twice in the period.

The Avalanche jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on a power-play goal from Smyth, followed by Tucker’s bank shot off Ersberg.

Tucker’s goal was set up on a pass from captain Joe Sakic, who elected to skip retirement and return for a 20th season. Sakic comes into the year as the league’s eighth all-time leader in points (1,629). He’s also 11th in assists (1,006) and 14th in goals (623).

The 33-year-old Tucker joined the Avalanche in July after being bought out of his contract by the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team he had played with for the last eight seasons.
