EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)—A pair of Edmonton newcomers helped the Oilers to a much-needed victory.

In his home debut, Sergei Samsonov set up Shawn Horcoff’s goal 3:04 into overtime and Dwayne Roloson made 18 saves against his former team as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 Thursday night.

“He is so dangerous,” Horcoff said of Samsonov. “A lot of people get caught watching him.”

Roloson allowed two goals on his first eight shots and earned his second win in five games with Edmonton. He and Samsonov were acquired by the Oilers at the trade deadline and were introduced to the home crowd on Thursday.

“It really is exciting,” said Roloson, who shared goaltending duties in Minnesota with Manny Fernandez. “I’m just trying to take advantage of the playing time.”

Samsonov found Horcoff alone for a backhand winner past goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

“It was like he was slalom skiing out there,” Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said.

Jaroslav Spacek had a goal and assist, and Jarret Stoll also scored for Edmonton, which trails the first-place Flames by four points in the Northwest Division.

Matthew Lombardi and Mike Leclerc scored for Calgary, which started a season-high, seven-game road trip.

Stoll tied it 2-2 in the back-and-forth third period after deking Kiprusoff and sliding the puck around on his forehand to deposit it into the far side of an open net.

Spacek scored in the first period off a long point shot moments after Kiprusoff stuffed Ryan Smyth with a post-to-post stop.

Lombardi fooled Roloson high to the glove side on the Flames’ fourth shot of the game, and the first period ended 1-1.

The Oilers killed off two penalties to open the second period before Leclerc beat Roloson during a scramble at 9:59. Edmonton managed just four shots in the frame.

“I think it comes down to we weren’t competing hard enough,” Lombardi said.
