The Detroit Red Wings were embroiled in a tough playoff series with the Anaheim Ducks last spring and needed a clutch goal on home ice to win Game 7 and avoid getting upset.

Six months later, the Red Wings are showing they can still be a force in the Western Conference, while the Ducks are floundering at the bottom of the Pacific Division.

Detroit looks to continue its home dominance of Anaheim on Saturday night when the teams meet for the first time this season.

The Red Wings (9-5-3) lost in seven games to Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup finals last June after winning it the previous year.

One of the teams second-seeded Detroit eliminated to reach the finals was eighth-seeded Anaheim (6-8-3) and it took a bitter semifinals series stretched to its maximum to determine the winner.

That series included five games that were decided by one goal with Dan Cleary’s score with 3 minutes to play in Game 7 securing a 4-3 win and a third consecutive trip to the conference finals for the Red Wings.

Detroit struggled at the start of this season, going 3-4-2 before turning things around with a 6-1-1 stretch after beating Vancouver 3-1 on Thursday. That came a night after a 9-1 victory at Columbus, a Central rival along with Chicago which is challenging the Wings’ run of eight consecutive division titles.

“We aren’t winning games in the same fashion that we used to, that’s pretty obvious,” coach Mike Babcock said. “But we are finding ways to grind games out and that’s what we have to do.”

A visit by the Ducks could help the Red Wings continue their strong play. They’re 24-3-0 with three ties against them all-time during the regular season at Joe Louis Arena.

The Wings could get a lift if Chris Osgood(notes), 10th all-time with 395 wins, is able to start in net after he was rested against the Blue Jackets before a bout with the flu forced him out Thursday.

Osgood is 6-3-2 with a 2.77 goals-against average and a shutout, while posting a 14-2-0 mark with a tie and a 2.48 GAA in 17 games, including six in the postseason, against the Ducks. If Osgood is unable to play, Jimmy Howard(notes) would face Anaheim for the first time.

Howard won the last two games while stopping 56 of 58 shots, improving to 3-2-1 with a 2.66 GAA in seven appearances.

“I think everybody in this dressing room believes I can do it,” said Howard, who is in his fourth season as a backup with Detroit. “I just have to keep doing it consistently.”

The Ducks dropped to 0-1-1 on a four-game trip after falling 3-2 in a shootout at Columbus on Friday.

“We are desperate for a win on the road,” coach Randy Carlyle said. “I didn’t think we played that poor a hockey game. But we will take the point and move on. It’s not easy to win on the road.”

While Anaheim is struggling, Corey Perry(notes) has been one of the few bright spots. The right wing ranks among the league leaders with 12 goals and 21 points, failing to record a point in only three games.

Perry, though, has just three goals and five assists in 15 games against the Red Wings. However, he had five of each during last season’s playoff series.

Todd Marchant(notes) scored his second goal of the season Friday. The veteran center came up big in the playoffs against Detroit last spring, scoring in the third overtime to clinch a 4-3 win at Joe Louis in Game 2.

Notes

Anaheim made the only roster adjustment for either team from Game 3, scratching C Petteri Nokelainen and putting Ryan Carter on the ice for the first time in the series. ... A 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit Orange County about 2 hours before game time, and an aftershock gently rocked the Pond between the first two periods. ... D Francois Beauchemin is the only other Ducks rookie to score two goals in a playoff game, doing it April 25, 2006, against Calgary.

By sweeping the Blue Jackets, the Red Wings became the first team since the 2002 Colorado Avalanche to advance past the conference quarterfinals the season after winning the Stanley Cup. Colorado made it to the conference finals in 2002 before losing to Detroit, which went on to win the championship. But the Red Wings fell to the Vancouver Canucks in the quarterfinals in 2003. Others to fail to advance were the 2004 New Jersey Devils, the 2006 Tampa Bay Lightning, the 2007 Carolina Hurricanes - who did not even qualify for the playoffs - and the 2008 Anaheim Ducks. ... Detroit enjoyed success on the power play, scoring three times on six opportunities. But it was unable to stop Columbus, which went 2-for-2 with the man advantage. ... RW Marian Hossa, who scored a pair of goals, registered a game-high seven shots.

@Nwaf(Nutcase With Ass Fetish).......Oh wait.....You said that your name meant "proud", right? Proud of WHAT exactly? You're probably the biggest lightweight I've ever encountered on these blogs, so what are you "proud" of? Are you proud of the fact that you continually throw pebbles at me only to scamper away when I answer? You're a mindless worm, crawl back under your rock.

@Nwaf(Nutcase With Ass Fetish)........Chicago sucks??? They are AHEAD of your beloved pink wings, are they not? So what does that make them? Calgary sucks? They are currently leading their division as well. If I used your metric, apparently # of titles, the Habs and the Leafs would be the 2 greatest teams alive, right? Even by YOUR standard the pink wings are THRID RATE! As to players, I understand how a homosexual, like yourself, who gushes after the most feminine team in pro sports(your pinkies) could not appreciate talented players who don't wear panties(like Chederberg), who don't run from a fight ( like your entire team) and who don't count on the refs caudling to be successful. Fortunately, the majority of limp wristed, mangina bearing males reside in one state...MICHIGAN. Thus, I only have to deal with them from afar.

I'll address the "my team" question, again, since it continues to come up. I have no one team that I'm emotionally tied to. I am a hockey fan, not a "hawks" fan or a "habs" fan. I prefer "old school" style, physical hockey; which is the biggest reason I despise the feminine pink wings. There are certain teams that I currently "prefer" to watch, such as: Calgary, Chicago, Anaheim, Dallas. There are currently 3 jerseys I wear with regularity: Iginla, Phaneuf and Pronger(Anaheim version). I've ordered a Getzlaf and considered a Nash(more to help the struggling local team). Hope that helps..............

Wow, you ladies in Michigan are soooo desperate for a win, even one over the LAST PLACE TEAM has you talking sh*t? I'm REALLY impressed with all the attention from my inoccuos post, observing that coach Nocock's supposed "new strategy" of a grinding defensive approach doesn't seem to be taking hold. NOBODY has a response to that observation, other than weak attacks on me? I thought that pink wings fans boasted of being the "most knowledgable" blah blah blah?? What happened to the cries of "da fat man never talks hockey because he's an idiot"? Take a look in the mirror you mindless losers; you bring nothing new or original to the table. The last original thoughts to stream from Michigan were the "circle jerk", created in the Wolverqueen locker room by Bo Schembechler(perfected by Rich Fraudriguez) and the "salad toss" which was started as a pink wing tradition by Gordie Howe and handed down through the ages (perfected by Steve Yzerwoman). All else is regurgitated drivel.

Great game that I had the pleasure of experiencing from the ninth row behind Howard. For the most part the Wings D looked solid. Howard let in a softie and our D kind of gave up an easy one but overall it was a good defensive effort. Detroit never realy let up on the offense the entire game and it just wore down Hiller. Most of Detroits goals were well earned. One thing that concerned me though is I saw Anaheim go back to the type of physical play they exhibited during the playoffs and even witht he addition of Brad May and big Bert they still seemed to be pushing the Wings around without consequence. That needs to change if the Wings want another shot at the conference finals.

It only took him how many years to live up to his billing? He was horrible as a kid on a bad Hawks team.

All's I'm sayin is Let's Go Delmore! Let's Go Delmore! Dark Horse for the Norris, no doubt! Give him a shot! Who's going to lose a spot in the process? Super Cuts Stuart? Brett Lebda? Humor me here, there will never be an Andy Delmore bobblehead night if the Wings organization doesn't wake up. Or will the Griffins have one? Let me know I'm on the first plane out. BTW guys really don't you think this was a pretty sloppy win? A nice win, but against a lame Duck team. WTF happened to Hiller? Piece of swiss cheese most games this season. I refuse to believe the loss of Chris Pronghorn has made THAT much difference. The good news with the Ducks playing badly is no word from Pickler or Peeler. The crickets are chirping in their neighborhood.

What a good week by the Wings. They go 3-0-0 and Howie backstops them in all three games. Sure he was a little shaky in the third but I'd like to see him get the start next Wednesday against the Stars. Even if Ozzie is healthy by then. Stick with the hot goaltender, Babs.

@ da fat ass: What's the matter? Feeling a little blue and down cuz the Wings are on fire now? Don't worry man, the RED WINGS are just getting started.

    Let's go Red Wings!
