Back-to-back overtime wins have the Calgary Flames feeling good about themselves, while the New York Rangers believe their latest victory helped them avoid the wrath of their coach.

The Flames return home in search of a third straight win Saturday night when they face the Rangers, who hope to have starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist(notes) available.

Calgary (9-4-1) lost the final two games of a five-game homestand Oct. 16-31 and had three days off to prepare for back-to-back road games. The Flames got back on track with a 3-2 victory Wednesday at Dallas and a 2-1 win Thursday at St. Louis.

“To be able to get two of them in a row, in overtime like this, it’s a great feeling,” star winger Jarome Iginla(notes) said. “It’s good for momentum.”

Three of the Flames’ nine wins have come in overtime. They beat Edmonton 4-3 in a shootout on Oct. 8.

“A good road trip for us,” goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff(notes) said. “To come out with four points, that’s huge. To win these close games, it’s nice.”

New York (10-6-1) is hoping to finish with a winning road trip after defeating Edmonton 5-3 on Thursday. The Rangers opened the trip with a 4-1 loss at Vancouver on Tuesday, and had scored five goals in losing three of four before Thursday.

“We needed a win of any kind period, not just a road win,” Rangers backup goaltender Steve Valiquette said. “Just like Edmonton, we have been reeling a little bit and we knew this game was an opportunity to perhaps turn things around.

“We would have been in deep trouble with (coach John Tortorella) if we had recorded another loss here.”

The Rangers got power-play goals from Marian Gaborik(notes), Ryan Callahan(notes) and Ales Kotalik(notes) and their penalty kill unit - which is among the best in the NHL - stopped all four power-play chances for the Oilers.

“I think the last two or three games that the effort has been there, we just found a way to score some goals tonight,” Tortorella said. “Getting three on the power play really helped.”

New York is hopeful that Lundqvist will be back after Valiquette started Thursday and made 26 saves. Lundqvist, 8-5-1 with a 2.52 goals-against average, sat out with a stiff right thigh.

The Rangers also ended a four-game road slide. They have won two of their last three games at Calgary, but lost 4-3 on Jan. 2, 2008, in their first visit in more than five years.

Iginla had a strong road trip for Calgary with three goals and one assist. He has eight goals and three assists in his last seven games against the Rangers.

Calgary defenseman Robyn Regehr(notes) had a six-game assist streak snapped in Thursday’s win. Regehr has eight points to match his total from 75 games last season.

DA2112, wrong on all counts but nice try. I meant the geography and distance on the flight home, but your sense of self-importance had you thinking I'm taking a shot at Canada. Love the country, but as you've been able to prove so eloquently, every neighborhoods got a couple of clueless guys like you, eh? I promise not to hold it against your neighbors.

Nice job with the stats while avoiding the facts. Glencross headhunts Drury, but you're too busy tough talking a non-issue like Avery vs Pfaneuf. That was great analysis - I defer to your awesome hockey knowledge, young Mr. Cherry.

This is too easy to be fun.

More of the same. Mediocre teams such as the Rangers will inevitably sink to lower middle or bottom of their division in the NHL. The Rangers simply don't have enough talent to compete head to head, day in, day out with the best ice hockey players in the world.

that was pathetic . your captain gets knocked out of the game from a cheapshot and nobody on the whole team does anything about it. rangers need to get some real men on their team to stick up for one another. glenncross should have been laid out on the next shift ! instead of tortayella screaming at everybody for making a mistake maybe he should teach his players how to be men instead of little boys!

I saw the hit on Drury I would say it was a dirty hit, there was no puck there and it was kinda of from behind. Hopefully the league will handle it properly.

@12: Let me guess .... you've never played hockey. Yawn ... another tough-talking expert analysis. *That "undrafted POS puke" is +8 ... higher than anyone on the Rangers lol. Pretty hilarious that one of the announcers on MSGN called him "Curtis Glenbrook" ... nice touch, fellas. Eventually he'll pay for that hit in one form or another. But you should be grateful that Phaneuf didn't beat the living crap out of that jackass Avery. That just proves Dion is maturing. You just go back to your barca chair and let the cable TV wash over you ... the rest of us out here "in the butt end of Canada" will stick to the hockey lol.

The most sickening aspect of the Glencross hit is the complete lack of response by the Rangers. Your captain, the hardest-working guy on the team and the cleanest player in the NHL is blatantly head hunted and NO ONE even thinks to check this undrafted POS puke aggressively - never mind give him a throat full of his own teeth? Are you kidding me? If he's too injured to fly, and they're going to end up leaving their captain in a hospital in the butt end of Canada, every Ranger player should have to ride home in the cargo hold of that plane, ashamed to show their face when they land at JFK.

This is exactly why the Rangers are plummeting in the standings, lack of guts and balls. No checking. No heart. Redden got run repeatedly yet it seemed the Ranger forwards went out of their way NOT to check the Flames D. By the start of the second, the outcome of this game was decided even if the score was tied. If this keeps up, the outcome of the season has already been decided as well. Brashear cannot be the only guy willing to drop the gloves to stand up for his team. Hell, even Shanny was willing to throw down to prove a point.

    Just disgusting.

Because Drury was nowhere near the puck means Glencross should get a minimum of 5 games.
