While the Florida Panthers are showing signs that their dismal start could be turning around, things just keep getting worse for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina’s most recent victory came against the Panthers on Oct. 9, but the visiting Hurricanes will be without star center Eric Staal(notes) as they try to repeat the feat and avoid a 10th straight loss Wednesday.

The Hurricanes’ worst start in franchise history has been shocking after the team reached the Eastern Conference finals last season and brought back most of its key players.

Carolina (2-8-3) has had major problems all over the ice during its 0-6-3 skid and shown little progress, having been outscored 16-4 in its last three games.

“I think we’re all taken aback, and I think that’s part of it,” coach Paul Maurice said after Sunday’s 5-1 home loss to San Jose. “I think that things that you’ve seen work well in the past haven’t worked well. Areas that you expected to be strong in - forechecking and controlling the puck in the offensive zone - (haven’t worked). That surprises the hell out of you.”

Even Staal, who has totaled 327 points over the past four seasons while playing in every game, has struggled. He has five points in 13 contests and his streak of 349 consecutive games played will end after he left Sunday’s loss with an upper-body injury.

“He’ll play through most things but he couldn’t go,” Maurice said that night. The coach announced Tuesday that Staal is “week to week” and will likely miss at least three games.

Perhaps facing the Panthers (4-7-1) will help after Carolina beat Florida 7-2 last month for its only regulation win.

“We’ll take a 7-2, don’t get me wrong, but what we need is a grind win and a tight game at the end where we come out on top because we did the same things over and over again with great speed and great confidence,” Maurice told the Hurricanes’ official Web site.

The Panthers are certainly feeling more confident after winning on the road on consecutive nights over the weekend, including an impressive 4-0 victory over St. Louis on Saturday. They had lost eight of their previous nine.

“We came out with a conscious effort to make good decisions with the puck and be patient and have some composure,” coach Peter DeBoer said. “I think we did all those things.”

Perhaps most promising was that Tomas Vokoun(notes) stopped 34 shots for his first shutout of the season on the heels of a sluggish start. Playing behind a defense that had allowed an average of 36.6 shots through his first nine appearances, Vokoun had a 3.65 goals-against average entering Saturday’s game.

The Hurricanes chased Vokoun last month after scoring five goals on 26 shots, but the veteran is 4-1-2 with a 2.54 GAA when facing Carolina at home since he joined the Panthers.

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward(notes) has won four of his six starts at Florida.

i'd like to know how Lindy Ruff and BUF GM still have jobs. seriously, they traded Briere and Drury, the two players responsible for their success. that guy Bryers (i think thats his name) is gonna to great to watch, havent seen him yet, but i'll be watching him.
think i might trade Coburn for him in my NHL10 season...lol

Cory M. @#$%tard is this all you do, sit at home and rant about how horrible the Hurricanes fanbase is?

Don't you have your own goddamn team you should be paying attention to?

Again, it seems like the Bruins fans (Hockeyguru) and Buffalo fans (christopher p) and jersey fans always piss themselves because whenever we actually make playoffs we go ape-sh1t and ruin their "amazing season". Sorry.

I will do my best to be objective in my comment here.... first off- the carolina hurricanes are a team that has surprised me a lot, they have won the cup, and made several very strong playoff appearances. most teams don't win the cup all that often. I have followed vancouver since the '94 finals and they still havn't won it, but its been amazing just following a team and having loyalty to the game. I used to live in tampa bay, when they were basement dwellers, and the rink was half empty. I used to buy tickets for 16 bucks and then sneak down to the front level or even rinkside sometimes... i moved away i think the year after vinny was drafted. that place is a good example of an area that is not 'traditional' hockey, i mean, hell, 40 years ago you would not thought of hockey in Florida! but you know what? I played on two ice leagues, an indoor roller hockey league and two outdoor roller leagues basically at the same time in clearwater florida in the late 90s ... thats a testament to todays society... no i dont think most of north carolina has that level of hockey intensity, but it is growing, especially in the piedmont, and maybe charlotte and asheville... there are a couple semi-pro leagues as well with teams in NC. but regarding attendance... i live in carolina now and im something like 4 hours away from raleigh yet i've not ever gone to a game there... and im a die-hard hockey fan. don't ask me why, but ive not gone to one single game. i watch a lot of games on the NHL network and listen to nhl radio or whatever, and follow games on here, but if im not going to games, i don't expect a lot of these UNC or Duke fans to switch there loyalty to the 'Canes. But on the flipside, a lot of places like Vancouver they complain about 'bandwagon' fans .... in NC, I welcome them...and least then i have someone to talk @#$% to, other than the cat, ...damn cat, where'd you go?

Oh yea #5 the youth hockey movement in Carolina is really taking off. How many NHL players are from Raleigh again? Oh yea zero. There was 3 players from Buffalo in the Stanley Cup finals alone so dont make me laugh. We produce NHL all-stars, you guys produce big and tough college basketball players. Wow. And you actually think the NHL has the most reactionary fanbase in the world! You're kidding right. The NFL does far and away and you might be the only person in the world that thinks that. And the '67 Packers would obliterate the '09 Redskins with their eyes closed soo please stop. Stick to what you know best. Nascar and college basketball. In other words the 2 most god awful "sports" on earth.

God I love it. I would suggest the word contraction but I doubt most hillbillies from Carolina would know what it means so Ill save it. Ummmm the team is one of the biggest jokes in sports and everyone knows it so whats the discussion here. I mean is anybody really surprised? The city of Buffalo could be hit with a nuclear warhead and they would still sell out a Tuesday game against the Islanders but you guys cant sell out a playoff game. Nice team really. You never should have beat Buffalo in'06 and you know it so why dont you do all the real hockey cities in North America a favor and sell the team to a city that deserves it. Dont worry you can sell out NASCAR events all u want because nobody but hillbillies care about it. Love the research by the way #1. THE CUP SHOULD BE IN HOCKEYTOWN WHERE IT BELONGS! aND BELIEVE U ME IM NOT TALKING ABOUT DETROIT. LETS GO BUFFALO!!!!!!

CHM: I've see you post this stuff before. Why do you revel in this? You seem to take perverse delight in these stories / stats, which are misleading in several regards. The team has an avid core of fans and is in a market in which youth hockey is thriving. I doubt Karmanos would have moved the team to NC if he could anticipate so many years in the red, but this is the LAST of the "non-traditional market" teams with which to take issue. It has a solid base and all of the requisites for growth. The Islanders and the Devils suffer the same sorts of shortfalls you highlight in these links, but no one calls for the contraction of these teams. I have 2 sincere questions for you and others make similar posts:
    1. Why do so many hockey fans wish for their league/sport/passion to fail? If you're answer fits the "purist" mold (i.e. let's have old-time hockey in markets that care about it and stop diluting the sport for the good of a chimeric US television market), then watch the CHL. I'd prefer to have the best athletes in the world on ice, and that won't happen without a national US presence. If you think that the league is too big and that talent is diluted, you're kidding yourself. With year-round ice, more players, more intensive training, kids in camps all summer, access to Europe's elite players, etc., the talent level in the league has never been higher. Some people claim that there are players in the 30-team league that would have never had a roster spot in the old NHL. I think it's just as likely that some of our cherished heroes from the "golden age" of hockey would be on the 4th line or the AHL today.
    2. Which brings me to my second (still sincere) question: why do self-identified "purists" (the Fishler school, if you will) feel compelled to bash the league of today in favor of the "golden age"? I understand sentimentality, and old curmudgeons (my apologies, Stan) are by definition inclined to do this. But you don't see it in other sports. No one in football seriously questions that the 2009 Redskins would probably rout the 1967 Packers. The athletes and fitness levels are just that much better. Yet hockey purists remain convinced that the '59-'60 Habs could skate circles around the '06-'07 Ducks--and spite the Ducks for existing.
    Why? Oh, why?

I love this game, but it has the most reactionary fan base in the sporting world.

Oh Corey, your pablam was missed. What is up with these guys? 21 shots in the 1st and only 32 for the game? No goals? Christ what do they have? 7 points in 15 games? I could understand poor attendance for this rubbish. Come on I need the Canes to give the Crapitals some competition! This is ridiculous.

Here's some great articles on how pathetic the fanbase is in Carolina. Lots of people like to read these. The Hurricanes have a pretty good team. I don't know how they play so well when nobody goes to their games. They couldn't even sell out when they were in the Cup in 06. If I were one of the seven Canes fans I'd put a loaded shotgun in my mouth and pull the trigger because I live in or near that sh!thole you all call Raleigh.

This first article is based on opinion so it doesn't have as much credence as the other ones.

    http://mvn.com/thestateofhockeynews/2009/08/2009-10-nhl-fan-rankings-part-i-30th-to-21st.html

This next one is about how terrible their attendance was the season following their run to the Cup in 2002.

    http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-8983381_ITM

Here's a good one about how this pathetic franchise couldn't sell out games 3 and 4 against the Devils in the 09 playoffs. Hahahahahahahaha!

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Playoff-non-sellouts-Signs-of-larger-trouble-or?urn=nhl,158865

Here's another pathetic article about the Canes. It describes their entire history. Scroll down to the miscellaneous section and you'll see that they failed to sell out their arena deep into the playoffs.
