PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Detroit Red Wings skated into Pittsburgh for this very game last year, outplayed the Penguins in their building and, in the final indignity, paraded with the Stanley Cup on the same ice where Mario Lemieux once played.

Think Sidney Crosby(notes) and Evgeni Malkin(notes) and Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) don’t remember the emptiness and frustration they felt after that Stanley Cup finals Game 6? After more than 100 games played over more than eight grueling months, the season ends and the other team celebrates before your friends, family and fans?

“We don’t want that image in our heads again,” Penguins forward Max Talbot(notes) said Monday.

If the Red Wings win this Game 6 on Tuesday, a year and five days after winning their last one there, it will be more than an image to the Penguins. It will be an instant replay.

Not since Montreal clinched in Boston in 1977 and 1978 has a team won the Stanley Cup in the same opponent’s building two seasons in a row, but the Red Wings will gladly take another clincher in Pittsburgh if it means avoiding an ever-dangerous Game 7.

“It’s obviously a special night when you know you have a chance to win the Cup in one single hockey game,” goalie Chris Osgood(notes).

The Penguins have heard for two days how they lost the Stanley Cup with a more-than-miserable 5-0 loss in Game 5 on Saturday. Even if they win Game 6 before an all-in-white home crowd, they must go back to Detroit and inhospitable Joe Louis Arena, where they have been outscored 10-2 while losing three games and, at times, their tempers.

No, the Penguins don’t need to be told what many outside their dressing room are thinking: This one’s over.

Penguins forward Ruslan Fedotenko(notes) is certain it’s not.

Five years ago, his Tampa Bay Lightning were down 3-2 to the Flames going into a road Game 6, with seemingly half of Alberta filling Calgary’s Red Mile entertainment district to celebrate. Instead, Tampa Bay won in overtime, and the Lightning also took Game 7 at home as Fedotenko scored both goals during their 2-1 victory.

“You don’t think about Game 7,” Fedotenko said. “You focus on one game, one shift, and focus like it’s your last shift, and you do it again on the next shift. You play like that, you take care of business, you put yourselves in a good position to win that game.”

The Penguins’ problem is the Red Wings are in a much better position. Two-way star Pavel Datsyuk’s(notes) return after missing seven playoff games with a foot injury gave them a big lift in Game 5, and many of their players have been in games like this before.

Nicklas Lidstrom(notes), Kris Draper(notes), Tomas Holmstrom(notes) and Kirk Maltby(notes) played on all four Red Wings Stanley Cup winners since 1997, and they can make it five on Tuesday. None of those previous four finals went to a Game 7.

“You play for home ice and we have it, but that doesn’t give you any guarantees,” Maltby said. “You always want to try and get that fourth win sooner than later. We have to play like we’re a desperate team.”

Especially against Crosby, who is second in the playoffs with 31 points but was neutralized in Game 5 by a combination of Henrik Zetterberg(notes), Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski(notes) and the Penguins’ ineptness. The Pittsburgh captain said it’s one bad game and it’s over.

One more loss and the Penguins’ season is over.

“I think we’re going to bounce back,” Crosby said. “We have all year. We weren’t happy with that effort, but we’ve moved on. I think we realize that, when we were in 10th place in the middle of the season, if they had told us that we had to win a game to force Game 7, we would have taken it.”

For all the Penguins’ struggles in Detroit, Game 7 couldn’t look more attractive.

“I really believe it’s not over,” goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said. “I really look for that Game 7. But at the same time we’ve got to be ready to just play the game.”

There’s no talk now that the Red Wings are too tired or too slow—funny how winning 5-0 quiets all that—but they also understand that if Pittsburgh forces Game 7, the pressure shifts from the Penguins to them.

“You have to find a way to win in the other team’s building. Except in this series, we’ve been able to do that,” Draper said. “It’s up to us to respond, to play the kind of hockey we know we can play.”

And the way Marian Hossa(notes) believed they would play after he jumped sides from Pittsburgh to Detroit after last year’s finals.

“It’s the first time I’ve been in this position, so close,” Hossa said. “That would be a dream come true (to win it in Pittsburgh), obviously.”

Not for the Penguins, who still remember Hossa’s last-second shot skittering along the goal line but not going in during their decisive 3-2 loss in Game 6 last year.

To coach Dan Bylsma, the best teams and best players are those that accomplish the most during the toughest times. For his team, this is about as tough as it gets.

“I like it being a defining moment. Moments like this define where you’re at,” he said. “Everyone in that room should be ready to play their best game and make a difference.”

Is this an article about game 7 or a penguins love-fest? Anyone else notice how the tv ratings all refer back to 'highest rated game since...' and it's always since a previous wings game?

sorry i wasnt in here tuesday night to get my just desserts from pens fans, i wasnt ducking you. Early tuesday morning our area was hit by a massive electrical storm, with enough juice jumping around near the house to sizzle my modem and wireless router.... 40+ hours and about $95 later i am back online. (at least the storm didnt get mah TV, cuz i would have missed a good game). Pens played one hell of a game, very close game indeed. Hell, a few more inches and it was tied, but they held us off, and grats to them on a good game 6. Cant wait for game 7, wished we could have ended it early though, but now both teams are amped with desperation. Good luck both teams, and GO RED WINGS!!! we must defend our house!

fleury is young... ill take him over any goalie in the league right now if i had to pick one to build a franchise around cause when hes hot, hes hot... and speaking of suspect goalies, yours lets in just as many soft goals as fleury does... so i really dont care what some no body tries to say about my goalie

hey bite me crosby may be tha baddest mfer in the league but he cant stop us from lighting up your suspect goalie. patrick roy was lit up for 7 goals in a game seven against us and he was ten times better than fleury.

First off I'm a Wings fan. This is going to be one hell of a game 7, probably one of the best we will all see in a long time. If and I mean If the Pens win it won't be a good night for Hossa. I have to give the guy credit for turning down alot of money just to have a chance (in his eyes) to win the most sought after trophy on the world. I have to give him credit because it wasn't about the money. Everyone enjoy the game........and GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brock, Sid is a he11 of a player but there are reasons he's not well like around the league. You comment on the wings fans crying about the refs...well fans maybe, but you never hear the players cry about anything. Babcock would have any of that and Crosby and Malkin would be better players under him. Look, Sid has a ton of talent and great vision which is his best quality IMO. He just doesn't have the same individual ability of Ovie, Datsyuk or even Malkin. He's a great player and sounds like a good person with his charity work. He just needs to keep his focus on the game, quit crying and leave the cheap slashes in peewees and people will start to like. It doesn't help him that the league has tried to force him down everyones throat to sell the game. People are tired of it.

Of course Game 7 will be called much better. The reason being the game is in Detroit. What have we seen in this series?...a lack of penalties called on both sides, but especially so in favor of Pittsburgh in virtually every game. In all of the games in Pittsburgh, notice how the completely underwhelming officiating goes from bad to absolute bulls--- in favor of Pittsburgh.

Conspiracy or not, it's very interesting how they're careful to have something resembling fairness in Detroit, but once they're in Pittsburgh away from a crowd that would highlight the parade of absolute garbage non-calls they let the Pens get away with, Pittsburgh is instantly untouchable and gets everything their way.

I'll openly admit I'm disappointed and got a bit carried away before Game 6. BUT....even though it's going to Game 7 instead of only 6, I still see the exact same thing happening as last year...the Wings were 1 win away and became too safe, too fine and went for the perfect pass and shot and eventually lost a one-goal game.

Like last year, I think they'll be angry like the triple-OT result last year and they'll come out strong in Game 7. At some point the Wings will basically catch fire and put the final, belated nail in Pittsburgh's inevitable coffin yet again...

I'm very confident the Wings will end up having a hell of a game, ending it like they did vs. Chicago or even somewhat dramatically like against Anaheim...

Well now that the NHL got its wish and have a 7th game coming up, I wonder if penalties like shots to the head, two hand slashes as defensive strategy, and all cross checking in front of the net will be called to determine the real HOCKEY champ. After 50 years of watching this great game, I now feel like I'm watching the WWF.
Do you think that the rules are really being enforced or is selling the league more important?

Give Scuderi a raise in pay for his efforts last night!!! Talk about making 3 saves in the last few moments of the game in front of the goal shows his tenacity for making such plays. I have never seen a game where the entire Pens defense 'flooded' the net to keep the puck out! WOW...Wings may show how relentless they are, but the Pens are standing up to the test. Way to go Pittsburgh ~ you can do it!!

Oh and....Crosby leads ALL players in the playoffs in goals and he is only 4 goals away from tying the all time record for goals in a playoff run? He was the youngest captain in the NHL, he won the scoring title at 20? MVP of the league... I don't know what else this kid has to do to garner respect for his talent and his game? And he is unselfish, he set shis teammates up for empty netters that he could easily pad his stats with, works like a demon on the ice and is a tireless community activist and charitable philanthropist. I don't know about you, but I drank my weight in beer every night, pretended to be a college student and played half assed college baseball when I was 19/20/21 years old.

Pens played really well in game 6. Fleury has been the difference maker. Wings fans who know hockey know that you guys are for real. With that said, the reffing in the second period was a joke. Detroit should have had 4 or 5 power plays. I'm not saying they wasn't any no calls for Detroit, but I really felt the game was poorly called. We got our chances in the third thanks to Malkin showing everyone he has an IQ of 60 by taking a really stupid penalty that HAD to be called but still almost wasn't. I hope game 7 is called well. I don't want to win or lose due to bad calls/no calls. IMO, the interfence stuff should be called now as much as ever.

Brian S, I've played a lot of hockey myself and I have been a Pens fan since back in the early 80's B.M. Before Mario...when they stunk year in and year out and couldn't fill the old Igloo even half way. Believe me...I like rough, physical, CLEAN play and I would much rather see a game like last night than a Game 5 or Game 7 of the Washington series. I just had a debate about this very subject at work today. This Red Wings team today, although beatable, is top to bottom better than most teams that played back in the 80's, 90's or now. Mario, Gretzky, Bossy, Orr, etc... were literally men among boys when it came to talent and it showed on the ice, they could step around anybody, blow past most and stick handle in a phone booth. Now there are guys like that on just about every team in both conferences and on both sides of the blueline, but especially on this Detroit squad. There are no designated goons or muckers anymore on either side...these guys can all play and at a high level. I tip my hat to them, even in their worst game of the series...Game 4...they attempted 79 shots. 39 on Fleury, 20 blocked, 20 missed the cage or caught the pipe. That in and of itself is awesome, especially with the tight D that Pittsburgh has been playing. This series has been a Battle Royal, gut wrenching for the players and the fans...I can't explain the lack of goals on Crosby and Geno's part in this series. I know it has been tough sleddin' out there...but don't over look the other contributions Crosby brings to the table, defense, forecheck, forced errors, PP, a motor that never quits. And, he's 22...I say again...22. Geno is 23. Staal is 21. Fleury is 25. Kids (albeit talented ones)...playing against venerable veteran multiple Stanley Cup Champions and taking them to 7 games with a chance to maybe upset them on Friday....I don't know about you, but that excites the sh#t out of me...whether I'm a Pens fan or not...I love hockey, always have. Period.

it is really sad to see wings and pens fan bickering over the refs calls, or lack of. the bottom line is they are just out and out bad. showing a serious lack of consistancy. (for both teams). no matter what the outcome on friday, both teams have showed dominance, and both showed an inability to play up when they needed to. THE PENS WILL BREAKOUT ON FRIDAY, AND BRING THE CUP HOME, AND SHOWCASE IT NEXT TO THE SUPERBOWL TROPHY. GO PENS!!!!!!!!

A good game is what paints a pretty picture for me--whether the Pens win or lose. I have followed them since the late 70's and they will always be "my team". Both teams playing good, hard hockey is what the NHL is about.. The winning team is NOT the only representation of the NHL. People on here just love to dis the other team and its players. It makes for great comedy for the reader. But, hey, when you are passionate about "your team" that's what happens. On to game 7 in Detroit. I can't believe that this season is almost over! It's a great day for hockey!!

Photo You are right about game 5 Pittsburgh did lose there composure but I believe before all the bone headed penalties Pittsburgh took, Detroit was still up a couple, Both teams have had there cheap shot moments, what about when Maltby butt-ended Stall in the head? There was no call on that, Detroit was lucky Osgood brought his A game last night or it could have been way worse.

Blue Blood: The power play situation has only been altered because of the 1 game the PENS self destructed. Thats a stat thats way skewed on one game where the PENS lost their composure and let their emotions get the best of them, and they didnt get away with all the rough stuff & cheap shots they had been, and subsequently are, getting away with. I agree this has been a good series, Drop their own disaster game and I believe you ll find they hold the power play advantage. I dont believe I said the WINGS deserved to win that game last night.....
