Although they’re coming off a 5-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday, the Hurricanes were dealt a 7-1 loss by the Capitals the night before.
Scoring leader Robert Lang had three goals to lead Washington, which has taken five of six from Carolina the last two seasons. Dainius Zubrus also scored twice for last-place Washington, with his third period goal chasing Hurricanes goalie Kevin Weekes from the game.
“They’re talented. If you look at their forwards they have a lot of depth and offensive skill,” Weekes said after the game. “Personally I don’t care what a team’s record is prior to playing them. You always have to respect talent and I don’t think we respected that tonight.”
“Our players did a very good job understanding the importance of a good start,” coach Paul Maurice said. “That (Cole) goal was concrete evidence they were ready to play.”
Weekes’ top priority in this game will be stopping Lang, who leads the Capitalss with 10 goals and 21 points. In 27 career games against Carolina, the 32-year-old center has 10 goals and 16 assists.
The Capitals are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
The loss was Washington’s fourth in five games, and 11th in 15.
