CHICAGO (TICKER) —The Edmonton Oilers seek a season-high fifth consecutive victory Sunday afternoon when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks.
Edmonton has won straight for the first time since November 26- December 3. The Oilers occupy the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference, but are just one point behind the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for seventh place and two behind the Minnesota Wild for sixth place.
In its first game clinching a playoff berth, Jussi Markkanen made 26 saves, including 11 in the opening period as Edmonton concluded a four-game homestand with Friday’s 4-0 blanking of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Brad Isbister, Ryan Smyth, defenseman Cory Cross and Jason Chimera also tallied for Edmonton, which has won six of its last seven games and is 10-2-1-1 in March and 9-2-1-1 following a nine-game winless skid.
Chicago fell to 6-15-2-2 since the All-Star break with a 4-3 overtime loss at Minnesota on Friday. The Blackhawks failed to win consecutive games for the second time since the All-Star break as they blew a pair of one-goal leads in the third period.
Edmonton leads the season series 2-1.
